High precision determination of the Q2Q^2-evolution of the Bjorken Sum

We present a significantly improved determination of the Bjorken Sum for 0.6Q2\leq Q^{2}\leq4.8 GeV2^{2} using precise new g1pg_{1}^{p} and g1dg_{1}^{d} data taken with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. A higher-twist analysis of the Q2Q^{2}-dependence of the Bjorken Sum yields the twist-4 coefficient f2pn=0.064±0.009±0.0360.032f_{2}^{p-n}=-0.064 \pm0.009\pm_{0.036}^{0.032}. This leads to the color polarizabilities χEpn=0.032±0.024\chi_{E}^{p-n}=-0.032\pm0.024 and χBpn=0.032±0.013\chi_{B}^{p-n}=0.032\pm0.013. The strong force coupling is determined to be \alpha_{s}^{\overline{\mbox{ MS}}}(M_{Z}^{2})=0.1124\pm0.0061, which has an uncertainty a factor of 1.5 smaller than earlier estimates using polarized DIS data. This improvement makes the comparison between αs\alpha_{s} extracted from polarized DIS and other techniques a valuable test of QCD.Comment: Published in Phys. Rev. D. V1: 8 pages, 3 figures. A Measurement of the Electric Form Factor of the Neutron through d(e,en)p\vec{d}(\vec{e},e'n)p at Q2=0.5Q^2 = 0.5 (GeV/c)2^2

We report the first measurement of the neutron electric form factor GEnG_E^n via d(e,en)p\vec{d}(\vec{e},e'n)p using a solid polarized target. GEnG_E^n was determined from the beam-target asymmetry in the scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from polarized deuterated ammonia, 15^{15}ND3_3. The measurement was performed in Hall C at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (TJNAF) in quasi free kinematics with the target polarization perpendicular to the momentum transfer. The electrons were detected in a magnetic spectrometer in coincidence with neutrons in a large solid angle segmented detector. We find GEn=0.04632±0.00616(stat.)±0.00341(syst.)G_E^n = 0.04632\pm0.00616 (stat.) \pm0.00341 (syst.) at Q2=0.495Q^2 = 0.495 (GeV/c)2^2.Comment: Latex2e 5 pages, 3 figure

Target and beam-target spin asymmetries in exclusive pion electroproduction for Q2>1GeV2 . I. ep→eπ+n

Beam-target double-spin asymmetries and target single-spin asymmetries were measured for the exclusive π + electroproduction reaction γ ∗ p → n π + . The results were obtained from scattering of 6-GeV longitudinally polarized electrons off longitudinally polarized protons using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer at Jefferson Laboratory. The kinematic range covered is 1.1 < W < 3 GeV and 1 < Q 2 < 6 GeV 2 . Results were obtained for about 6000 bins in W ,   Q 2 ,   cos ( θ ∗ ) , and ϕ ∗ . Except at forward angles, very large target-spin asymmetries are observed over the entire W region. Reasonable agreement is found with phenomenological fits to previous data for W < 1.6 GeV, but very large differences are seen at higher values of W . A generalized parton distributions (GPD)-based model is in poor agreement with the data. When combined with cross-sectional measurements, the present results provide powerful constraints on nucleon resonance amplitudes at moderate and large values of Q 2 , for resonances with masses as high as 2.4 GeV

First measurement of direct f0(980)f_0(980) photoproduction on the proton

We report on the results of the first measurement of exclusive f0(980)f_0(980) meson photoproduction on protons for Eγ=3.03.8E_\gamma=3.0 - 3.8 GeV and t=0.41.0-t = 0.4-1.0 GeV2^2. Data were collected with the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The resonance was detected via its decay in the π+π\pi^+ \pi^- channel by performing a partial wave analysis of the reaction γppπ+π\gamma p \to p \pi^+ \pi^-. Clear evidence of the f0(980)f_0(980) meson was found in the interference between PP and SS waves at Mπ+π1M_{\pi^+ \pi^-}\sim 1 GeV. The SS-wave differential cross section integrated in the mass range of the f0(980)f_0(980) was found to be a factor of 50 smaller than the cross section for the ρ\rho meson. This is the first time the f0(980)f_0(980) meson has been measured in a photoproduction experiment

Probing Quark-Gluon Interactions with Transverse Polarized Scattering

We have extracted QCD matrix elements from our data on double polarized inelastic scattering of electrons on nuclei. We find the higher twist matrix element \tilde{d_2}, which arises strictly from quark- gluon interactions, to be unambiguously non zero. The data also reveal an isospin dependence of higher twist effects if we assume that the Burkhardt-Cottingham Sum rule is valid. The fundamental Bjorken sum rule obtained from the a0 matrix element is satisfied at our low momentum transfer.Comment: formerly "Nachtmann Moments of the Proton and Deuteron Spin Structure Functions

A Precise Measurement of the Neutron Magnetic Form Factor GMn in the Few-GeV2 Region

    Get PDF
The neutron elastic magnetic form factor GMn has been extracted from quasielastic electron scattering data on deuterium with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at Jefferson Lab. The kinematic coverage of the measurement is continuous from Q2=1 GeV2 to 4.8 GeV2. High precision was achieved by employing a ratio technique in which many uncertainties cancel, and by a simultaneous in-situ calibration of the neutron detection efficiency, the largest correction to the data. Neutrons were detected using the CLAS electromagnetic calorimeters and the time-of-flight scintillators. Data were taken at two different electron beam energies, allowing up to four semi-independent measurements of GMn to be made at each value of Q2. The dipole parameterization is found to provide a good description of the data over the measured Q2 range.Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures, revtex4, submitted to Physical Review Letters, Revised version has changes recommended by journal referee

Measurement of the Polarized Structure Function σLT\sigma_{LT^\prime} for p(e,eπ+)np(\vec{e},e'\pi^+)n in the Δ(1232)\Delta(1232) Resonance Region

The polarized longitudinal-transverse structure function σLT\sigma_{LT^\prime} has been measured using the p(e,eπ+)np(\vec e,e'\pi^+)n reaction in the Δ(1232)\Delta(1232) resonance region at Q2=0.40Q^2=0.40 and 0.65 GeV2^2. No previous σLT\sigma_{LT^\prime} data exist for this reaction channel. The kinematically complete experiment was performed at Jefferson Lab with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) using longitudinally polarized electrons at an energy of 1.515 GeV. A partial wave analysis of the data shows generally better agreement with recent phenomenological models of pion electroproduction compared to the previously measured π0p\pi^0 p channel. A fit to both π0p\pi^0 p and π+n\pi^+ n channels using a unitary isobar model suggests the unitarized Born terms provide a consistent description of the non-resonant background. The tt-channel pion pole term is important in the π0p\pi^0 p channel through a rescattering correction, which could be model-dependent.Comment: 6 pages, LaTex, 5 eps figures: Submitted to PRC/Brief Reports v2: Updated referenc

Q^2 Dependence of the S_{11}(1535) Photocoupling and Evidence for a P-wave resonance in eta electroproduction

New cross sections for the reaction epeηpep \to e'\eta p are reported for total center of mass energy WW=1.5--2.3 GeV and invariant squared momentum transfer Q2Q^2=0.13--3.3 GeV2^2. This large kinematic range allows extraction of new information about response functions, photocouplings, and ηN\eta N coupling strengths of baryon resonances. A sharp structure is seen at WW\sim 1.7 GeV. The shape of the differential cross section is indicative of the presence of a PP-wave resonance that persists to high Q2Q^2. Improved values are derived for the photon coupling amplitude for the S11S_{11}(1535) resonance. The new data greatly expands the Q2Q^2 range covered and an interpretation of all data with a consistent parameterization is provided.Comment: 31 pages, 9 figure
