A Study of the Determinism of Eugene O\u27Neill as Seen in The Emperor Jones, Strange Interlude, and Mourning Becomes Electra

    Get PDF
In the light of the research which seems positively to support the concept that Eugene O\u27Neill believed in the philosophy of determinism, the writer was led to pursue this study of selected plays in an effort to establish through careful analysis, if, in the exposition of his plays, Eugene Gladstone O\u27Neill subscribed to a concept of determinism. Determinism in this study means the philosophical doctrine that man struggles, even though he may struggle against what may seem to be his own fate; even though taught by his own past, he is incapable avoiding his ultimate end. His struggle may provide him with hope, but despite his efforts, the inevitable occursā€”death, and too often mortal or moral defeat. This study does not attempt to consider all of O\u27Neill\u27s work. It is limited to a detailed analysis of three selected plays that seem deterministic in philosophy: The Emperor Jones, Strange Interlude, and Mourning Becomes Electra. This study of determinism as seen in Eugene O\u27Neill\u27s plays is an analysis of the philosophy of determinism as well as O\u27Neill\u27s personal interpretation of this philosophy. An oblique result of this study is that it shows that there is biographical material that indicates some events that may have influenced O\u27Neill and contributed to his embracing the philosophy of determinism. This investigation finally analyzes determinism as seen in three plays by Eugene O\u27Neill

Can Coloring Pre-Structured Designs That Have Complexity Aid in Reducing Anxiety in Those Greater Than 17 Years of Age?

    Get PDF
Objective: The objective of this selective evidence based medicine (EBM) review is to determine whether or not coloring mandalas or designs that have complexity and structure can aid in reducing anxiety in those greater than 17 years of age. Study Design: Review of three English language randomized controlled trials (RCTs), published in 2007, 2012, and 2015. Data Sources: Three randomized controlled trials published in peer-reviewed journals obtained using PubMed and EBSCOhost. Outcomes Measured: The Curry and Kasser study and the van dV and Serice7study both used the State Anxiety Inventory (SAI) to record anxiety. The Henderson et al study used the State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) to record anxiety. Results: The studies by Curry and Kasser2 and van dV and Serice found a statistically significant decrease in anxiety levels following 20 minutes of structured coloring, compared to free-form coloring. The study conducted by Henderson et al found that there was no statistically significant difference in anxiety reduction between those that participated in freehand mandala-coloring and those that participated in freehand coloring of specific objects. Conclusions: The results showed that structured coloring is effective for reducing anxiety. Additional research should include a larger, more diverse population sample, as well as focus on specific designs and their complexity to determine which produce the largest anxiolytic effects

The construction of effective cooperative learning groups for successful high school biology instruction

The purpose of this project was to determine the effect of balancing learning styles in the construction of cooperative learning groups. The investigation attempted to determine if science instruction and subsequent achievement can be enhanced by establishing effective cooperative learning groups. The Learning Style Inventory was used to determine learning styles. Then groups were formed based on either construction of balanced or unbalanced cooperative learning groups. Students then completed group activities as contained in the Celebrate Immunity Team Pack. Pretests and posttests were administered in order to measure cognitive gains. A statistical analysis of the results of the groups showed a significant difference in posttest scores in one group of students whose groups consisted of a balance of learning styles. In another class that consisted of an imbalance of learning styles no statistical significance was found in their posttest scores. This was as expected. Group construction must consist of students who can work together effectively. In determining learning styles, this balance can be achieved. However, in one group of students which consisted of groups of balanced learning styles, no statistical significance was found in their posttest scores. They did show an increase in their posttest scores, but further study is needed to determine what other variables determine the construction of effective learning groups

    Highway 12

Highway 12 is undoubtedly one of not only America\u27s but the world\u27s most scenic highways. From its intersection on the west with Highway 89 south of Panguitch, Utah, it runs up through Red Canyon onto the Paunsagunt Plateau and across Bryce Canyon National Park. It then drops into the Paria River Valley, passes through several tiny villages, crosses some extraordinary (for anywhere but this region) badlands, and descends the Escalante River into Potato Valley. While a driver may justifiably feel she has seen some scenery by that point, the highway is just getting started, for in the next stretch, it crosses a labyrinth of multicolored sandstone humps and corridors, climaxed by a narrow hogback with steep slickrock drops to each side, all within Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Reaching the oasis of Boulder within this desert of rock, the road then climbs across the flank of the Aquarius Plateau, providing spectacular vistas and terminating at the gateway to Capitol Reef National Park. Along the way side roads and trails access the vast wilderness of the Paria and Escalante Rivers and the high plateaus they drain. Congress acknowledged the unequaled splendor of Highway 12 by designating it one of a handful of All-American Roads. To travel with Christian Probasco this road and its spurs, which lead deep into some of the wildest, most broken-up and stunning landscapes anywhere, can put a unique twist on an already singular experience. He knows the region as well as anyone and brings an original, edgy, youthful view to it. His opinions and his language may challenge you. His approaches to and perspectives on the land may sometimes surprise you. His understanding of the area\u27s history and its people will likely teach you a thing or two.https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/usupress_pubs/1145/thumbnail.jp

Delta memories and Delta days: facets of ladies\u27 lives as revealed to a southern daughter

The Arkansas Delta is a land considered by many to be devoid of beauty and richness of life. However, to a daughter who was the youngest child of the youngest child of a youngest child that was born in the Delta, the region is beautiful, enhanced by the observations of the lives of the women she observed there. An ethnography of the everyday lives of white, middle-class southern women in a small Arkansas Delta town seeks to communicate some of the richness and beauty of their lives, as well as other aspects of culture illustrative of southern culture in general, and Delta culture in particular

Generation and Characterization of Peptide Fusion Proteins

Pathogenic Th17 cells drive progression of many autoimmune diseases. Th17 cells develop from naĆÆve T cells in the immune system after antigen-driven stimulation in a specific cytokine environment. Normally, T cells act to fight off infection, but when not properly controlled, they can cause disease. The cytokine interleukin-23 (IL-23) plays an essential role in the expansion of pathogenic Th17 cells. IL-23 is a heterodimeric protein, composed of a p19 alpha chain and a p40 beta chain. The p40 is also part of IL-12 and binds to the IL-12 receptor beta 1 (IL-12RĪ²1) subunit. Thus, it follows that the IL-23 receptor is comprised of the IL-12RĪ²1 and IL-23 receptor alpha (IL23RĪ±) subunits. New research in therapeutics for autoimmune disease is attempting to inhibit IL-23 from binding to its receptor. Our laboratory previously screened a peptide library through display technologies for peptides that bound to the IL-23RĪ±. Peptides #7 and #2 were identified as having the strongest inhibitory activity on the IL-23 signaling pathway. However, peptides are small, leading them to be cleared from a biological system in a manner of minutes; therefore, the present project created fusion proteins of these peptides with mouse IgG2a-Fc. They were then expressed in mammalian cells, secreted and purified from medium. Peptide #2-Fc and its unmodified counterpart, Peptide #2, were tested and compared using cell-free and cell-based systems to ensure minimal loss of inhibitory activity upon fusion. This work generated a Peptide #2-Fc fusion protein with the capability to bind the IL23RĪ± chain and thus block IL-23 binding and inhibit subsequent signaling, as well an increased serum half-life over the original Peptide #2

Much Uncertainty About Uncertain Tax Positions

    Get PDF
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced in January 2010 a new initiative to require certain businesses to report ā€œuncertain tax positionsā€ on a new schedule filed with their annual tax returns. Draft schedules and instructions issued in April 2010 clarified some of the mechanical aspects of the new requirement but left many open issues and questions. The IRS proposal built on requirements by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) in FASB Interpretation No. 48, Accounting for Uncertainty in Income Taxes (ā€œFIN 48ā€). The standard requires companies, in their financial statements, to reserve some of the benefits from any position taken on their tax returns unless it is more likely than not that the IRS would fully concede the issue prior to litigation if it arose during an audit. The article describes the proposals and then discusses concerns and open issues. The most significant concerns include that, as a practical matter, information asymmetry may result in overly aggressive positions taken by the IRS and the IRS may not have the administrative capacity to use the additional information properly. The proposal also raises concerns about privilege and waiver, particularly with respect to the work-product doctrine and tax accrual workpapers
