A Tropical Modern Architect: Prof. John Owusu Addo

Professor John Owusu Addo is a Ghanaian tropical modern architect and a pioneer in architectural education and practice in the nation-building of Ghana and other Commonwealth countries. His contributions to the modern architecture discourse seem to be overshadowed by the cohort of architects of both Western and Socialist origin who practiced in Africa during the decolonization era. The Community Center at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) campus in Kumasi-Ghana was designed by him; it represents a classic example of ‘unknown’ heritage within the narrative. This short essay examines both primary and secondary data, including unpublished interviews, master series events, articles, and papers to contextualize Prof. Owusu Addo as an exemplary protagonist to be explored for the benefit of tropical modern architects, especially in African settings

Challenges Physical Education Teachers Encounter In Teaching Alongside Coaching Sports In Senior High Schools In The Central Region Of Ghana

Teaching and coaching are two different occupational roles. Performing the two alongside can be exciting and rewarding experience for many; however the combined roles of being a P.E teacher and a coach can create role conflict which can lead to job stress and burnout problems. It was against this background that the study sought to explore the challenges Physical Education teachers encounter in teaching and coaching sports in Senior High Schools in the Central region of Ghana. To achieve this, a descriptive design was used and the instrument for data collection was a questionnaire. Total samples of 130 P.E. teachers were selected from Senior High Schools in the Central Region of Ghana using census method. The statistical tools used for the analysis of results were descriptive statistics (frequency counts and percentages) and inferential statistics (Binary logistic regression). Results from the study revealed that, most P.E. teachers in the Senior High Schools in Central Region teach P.E. alongside coach school teams which majority find very challenging. This eventually lead most of them to experience work family conflict, fatigue, tension and job stress. Also, married P.E. teachers were more burnout than their colleagues who were not married. Finally, gender, age and academic qualification do not predict burnout of P.E teachers in the Central region Senior High Schools. Several recommendations were offered which included the fact that coaches should be employed to schools to reduce the workload of the P.E. teacher in the Senior High School in the Central region of Ghana

THE EFFECT OF ECONOMIC GROWTH AND TOTAL POPULATION ON POVERTY LEVEL IN NORTH SULAWESI

ABSTRACTThis study aims to test and analyze the effect of economic growth and total population to the poverty level in North Sulawesi. The study was conducted in the districts/cities located in North Sulawesi province with a total of 14 districts/cities. The data taken is after the year of 2008, this due to the district/city is lastly bloomed in 2008.  The data used in this research is quantitative data. This study uses secondary data and the time series data from the year of 2009 until 2016. Panel data is used as a combination of time series and cross section. Meanwhile the crossed section data is taken from all districts/municipalities in North Sulawesi province which is 14 districts/cities (10 districts and 4 cities) with a total of 98 observations obtained in this study. The data used in this research is secondary data obtained from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) at national level. Inferential statistical methods used in the analysis of research data is Dynamic Panel Data (DPD) considering that the sample size is relatively small. This study examined the effect of exogenous variables i.e. economic growth and total population, while the endogenoue one is poverty level. The result shows that simultaneously, economic growth and total population have a significant effect on poverty level in North Sulawesi.Keywords: Economic Growth, Total Population, Poverty Level, Dynamic Panel Dat

Does Liberalization of the Financial Sector Causes Economic Growth? Empirical Evidence from Ghana

In this paper, we examine the effect that financial sector liberalization has on macroeconomic performance in Ghana by using modern time series econometric analysis over the time period 1971-2010. This paper undertakes econometric models such as unit root testing, co-integration and Vector Error Correction (VECM) to empirically analyze the effect of financial sector liberalization on economic growth. Both the short-run and long-run effects of financial liberalization were studied. The results suggest negative and significant long-run relationship between financial liberalization and economic growth. The results are consistent with some of the other studies in other jurisdictions as described in the literature. Finally, it is concluded that the continual strengthening of the Central Bank’s capacity for supervision and prudential regulations such as such as the recent increase in reserve requirement by Bank of Ghana for various categories of financial institutions may have a long term positive effect on the performance of the economy as a whole. Justice and Inclusive Governance in Nigeria: Rethinking the Niger Delta Problem

The Niger Delta issue besides attracting impressive attention continues to linger due to failure to find plausible explanation for issues of the region. The discourse woven around this issue leaves two clear lines of argument. One sees the region responsible for her development woes, the other hold the alleged flawed Nigerian federal system, responsible for the challenges of the region. This paper relied on triangulation of data to argue that the issue of the Niger Delta lingers because of injustice in the Nigerian governance. The paper concludes that inclusive governance capable of giving the troubled oil-bearing region needed sense of belonging, would be able to bring peace to the region. The paper found inverted justice system in resource politics in Nigeria responsible for the continued agitation of the Niger Delta region.
