TRADITIONAL AND NONTRADITIONAL DETERMINANTS OF HOUSEHOLD EXPENDITURES ON SELECTED FRUITS AND VEGETABLES
Nontraditional variables such as liquid assets, households management style, and psychological levels influence both the type and variety of fruits and vegetables served by Washington households. Among traditional variables, household size, education levels, and geographic area within Washington State are relatively important factors. Income and occupation are relatively weak as explanatory variables. The liquid asset levels consume a larger amount and a greater variety of fruits and vegetables.Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety,
What bandwidth do I need for my image?
Computer representations of real numbers are necessarily discrete, with some
finite resolution, discreteness, quantization, or minimum representable
difference. We perform astrometric and photometric measurements on stars and
co-add multiple observations of faint sources to demonstrate that essentially
all of the scientific information in an optical astronomical image can be
preserved or transmitted when the minimum representable difference is a factor
of two finer than the root-variance of the per-pixel noise. Adopting a
representation this coarse reduces bandwidth for data acquisition,
transmission, or storage, or permits better use of the system dynamic range,
without sacrificing any information for down-stream data analysis, including
information on sources fainter than the minimum representable difference
itself.Comment: submitted to PAS
Simulacra, Symbolic Exchange and Technology in Michel Tournier\u27s La Goutte d\u27Or
In La Goutte d\u27Or, Michel Tournier offers a critique of Western culture by constructing a novel that reflects both Jean Baudrillard\u27s theories of simulacra and the political economy of the sign and Martin Heidegger\u27s meditations on technology. Tournier\u27s novel explores the relationship between Heidegger\u27s explanation of technology as an act of Enframing (Ge-stell) and Baudrillard\u27s description of an economy based upon exchange-sign value. Thus, through La Goutte d \u27Or, Michel Tournier depicts the violent confrontation between a symbolic exchange economy based on poietic acts and late capitalist economies of autonomized signs
A taxonomic guide to the mysids of the South Atlantic Bight.
Following the examination of extensive collections from the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), the Southeastern Regional Taxonomic Center (SERTC), and other regional institutions, 18 species of the family Mysidae are recognized and described from the South Atlantic Bight
(Cape Lookout, North Carolina to Cape Canaveral, Florida). This report includes synonymies of previous records, as well as new species distribution records. Previous
regional accounts of Metamysidopsis munda and Metamysidopsis mexicana are attributed to Metamysidopsis swifti. New regional records are established for Amathimysis brattegardi, Heteromysis beetoni, and Siriella thompsonii. Two other species tentatively identified as
Amathimysis sp. (nr. serrata) and Mysidopsis sp. (cf. mortenseni) may represent new taxa. Neobathymysis renoculata is included and discussed as a potential regional species. An illustrated key to the species currently known from the South Atlantic Bight is presented.
Relevant taxonomic, distributional, and ecological information is also included for each species. (PDF file contains 45 pages.
