    A perturbative approach to non-linearities in the information carried by a two layer neural network

    We evaluate the mutual information between the input and the output of a two layer network in the case of a noisy and non-linear analogue channel. In the case where the non-linearity is small with respect to the variability in the noise, we derive an exact expression for the contribution to the mutual information given by the non-linear term in first order of perturbation theory. Finally we show how the calculation can be simplified by means of a diagrammatic expansion. Our results suggest that the use of perturbation theories applied to neural systems might give an insight on the contribution of non-linearities to the information transmission and in general to the neuronal dynamics.Comment: Accepted as a preprint of ICTP, Triest

    Evaporation Channel as a Tool to Study Fission Dynamics

    The dynamics of the fission process is expected to affect the evaporation residue cross section because of the fission hindrance due to the nuclear viscosity. Systems of intermediate fissility constitute a suitable environment for testing such hypothesis, since they are characterized by evaporation residue cross sections comparable or larger than the fission ones. Observables related to emitted charged particle, due to their relatively high emission probability, can be used to put stringent constraints on models describing the excited nucleus decay and to recognize the effects of fission dynamics. In this work model simulations are compared with the experimental data collected via the ^{32}S + ^{100}Mo reaction at E_{lab}= 200 MeV. By comparing an extended set of evaporation channel observables the limits of the statistical model and the large improvement coming by using a dynamical model are evidenced. The importance of using a large angular covering apparatus to extract the observable is stressed. The opportunity to measure more sensitive observables by a new detection device in operation at LNL are also discussed.Comment: v1: 7 pages, 6 figure

    Nanometer-scale Tomographic Reconstruction of 3D Electrostatic Potentials in GaAs/AlGaAs Core-Shell Nanowires

    We report on the development of Electron Holographic Tomography towards a versatile potential measurement technique, overcoming several limitations, such as a limited tilt range, previously hampering a reproducible and accurate electrostatic potential reconstruction in three dimensions. Most notably, tomographic reconstruction is performed on optimally sampled polar grids taking into account symmetry and other spatial constraints of the nanostructure. Furthermore, holographic tilt series acquisition and alignment have been automated and adapted to three dimensions. We demonstrate 6 nm spatial and 0.2 V signal resolution by reconstructing various, previously hidden, potential details of a GaAs/AlGaAs core-shell nanowire. The improved tomographic reconstruction opens pathways towards the detection of minute potentials in nanostructures and an increase in speed and accuracy in related techniques such as X-ray tomography

    Replica symmetric evaluation of the information transfer in a two-layer network in presence of continuous+discrete stimuli

    In a previous report we have evaluated analytically the mutual information between the firing rates of N independent units and a set of multi-dimensional continuous+discrete stimuli, for a finite population size and in the limit of large noise. Here, we extend the analysis to the case of two interconnected populations, where input units activate output ones via gaussian weights and a threshold linear transfer function. We evaluate the information carried by a population of M output units, again about continuous+discrete correlates. The mutual information is evaluated solving saddle point equations under the assumption of replica symmetry, a method which, by taking into account only the term linear in N of the input information, is equivalent to assuming the noise to be large. Within this limitation, we analyze the dependence of the information on the ratio M/N, on the selectivity of the input units and on the level of the output noise. We show analytically, and confirm numerically, that in the limit of a linear transfer function and of a small ratio between output and input noise, the output information approaches asymptotically the information carried in input. Finally, we show that the information loss in output does not depend much on the structure of the stimulus, whether purely continuous, purely discrete or mixed, but only on the position of the threshold nonlinearity, and on the ratio between input and output noise.Comment: 19 pages, 4 figure

    Balancing exploration and exploitation in public management: Proposal for an organizational model

    Over the last 30 years, a wave of reforms has reshaped the panorama of public administrations around the world, which have also stimulated debates on the subject reform in public sector relations. Much research has focused on discussing the validity of New Public Management (NPM) as a paradigm, including the recognition of regional versions of a number of universal problems in the Public Governance, NPM, and Public Value areas. This debate is focused on the need to give concrete answers to the new management needs of policy makers and to the growing demands of citizens. Increasingly public administration is based on meeting two needs: society requires creative, flexible, and innovation-oriented approaches, whilst economic pressures and budget cuts are forcing uses and models oriented toward efficiency, competitiveness, and cost savings. As regard the changing requirements of the public government, the new organizational system needs to incorporate the creativity, innovation capacity, and flexibility necessary to achieve sustainability and public value. The purpose of this research is to offer an organizational model, which balances exploration activities with those of exploitation, thus being able to meet the changing needs within the Administration, and the actions envisaged for its operations. This article also introduces the requirements for a decision support system to measure regional performance and service quality. It is hoped that we add to our knowledge and understanding of coordinated public policy and good governance that is effective even in these radically demanding Covid-19 times

    Microstructural and morphological properties of homoepitaxial (001)ZnTe layers investigated by x-ray diffuse scattering

    The microstructural and morphological properties of homoepitaxial (001)ZnTe layers are investigated by x-ray diffuse scattering. High resolution reciprocal space maps recorded close to the ZnTe (004) Bragg peak show different diffuse scattering features. One kind of cross-shaped diffuse scattering streaks along directions can be attributed to stacking faults within the epilayers. Another kind of cross-shaped streaks inclined at an angle of about 80deg with respect to the in-plane direction arises from the morphology of the epilayers. (abridged version

    GaAs hetero-epitaxial layers grown by MOVPE on exactly-oriented and off-cut (1 1 1)Si: Lattice tilt, mosaicity and defects content

    Integration of III-V devices with Si-photonics and fabrication of monolithic III-V/Si tandem solar cells require the heteroepitaxy of III-V compounds on Si. We report on the lattice tilt, mosaicity and defects content of relaxed GaAs grown by MOVPE on exactly-oriented and 4°-offcut (1 1 1)Si. Thin GaAs single-layers grown at 400 °C and annealed at 700 °C show ∼ 3×10^8 cm−2 density of surface pinholes. Double-layer samples were obtained by GaAs overgrowth at 700 °C. GaAs epilayers are tilted by (0.05–0.14)° with respect to Si. Rotational twins were observed in X-ray diffraction (XRD) pole figures: the most abundant ones originate from 60°-rotation of GaAs around the [1 ̄1 ̄1 ̄] growth direction and are identified as micro-twins along the GaAs/Si hetero-interface. Twins obtained by rotations around the [1 ̄1 ̄1], [11 ̄1 ̄], and [1 ̄11 ̄] directions or by combined rotations around the growth direction and one of the former, were also observed. The GaAs mosaicity and block size were studied through high-resolution XRD intensity mapping: for single-layer samples crystal blocks are ascribed to 3–5 nm thin micro-twins, whose size does not change upon annealing. In double-layer samples thicker (32–35 nm) micro-twins occur. GaAs samples grown on offcut (1 1 1)Si show less rotational twins but a reduced mosaic block size with respect to exactly-oriented Si

    Community supported agriculture farmers' perceptions of management benefits and drawbacks

    Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is a direct partnership between producer(s) and a group of consumers/members to share the risks and responsibilities of farming activities. CSA aims at producing and providing environmentally, socially, economically, and nutritionally sustainable food. Past research has focused on CSA members\u2019 motivations. This research aims to gain a better understanding of CSA farmers\u2019 perceived benefits and drawbacks in managing a CSA farm, and whether CSA management perception varies in dierent countries. The research collected data from 35 farmers that were based in the United States (US) and Hungary (HU). Data elaboration includes a one-way Anova test, Chi-square test, principal component analysis, and multiple multivariate linear regressions. The results support that US and HU farmers have similar positive perceptions of CSA farming management, especially in food quality, nutritional value products, environmental, and community benefits. The main dierences concentrate on economic, financial, and management perceptions. CSA success as an alternative agro-food production and distribution system relies on the capability to involve CSA members. Therefore, CSA farmers\u2019 management skills may evolve to ensure the performance of communication and community engaging practices. The main CSA concern is ensuring a fair income and living wage for the farmers and labor force. There is a need for better balancing non-monetary and monetary benefits for the farmers

    Fuzzy FMECA analysis of radioactive gas recovery system in the SPES experimental facility

    Selective Production of Exotic Species is an innovative plant for advanced nuclear physic studies. A radioactive beam, generated by using an UCx target-ion source system, is ionized, selected and accelerated for experimental objects. Very high vacuum conditions and appropriate safety systems to storage exhaust gases are required to avoid radiological risk for operators and people. In this paper, Failure Mode, Effects, and Criticality Analysis of a preliminary design of high activity gas recovery system is performed by using a modified Fuzzy Risk Priority Number to rank the most critical components in terms of failures and human errors. Comparisons between fuzzy approach and classic application allow to show that Fuzzy Risk Priority Number is able to enhance the focus of risk assessments and to improve the safety of complex and innovative systems such as those under consideration

    RELAP5-3D thermal hydraulic analysis of the target cooling system in the SPES experimental facility

    The SPES (Selective Production of Exotic Species) experimental facility, under construction at the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN) Laboratories of Legnaro, Italy, is a second generation Isotope Separation On Line (ISOL) plant for advanced nuclear physic studies. The UCx target-ion source system works at temperature of about 2273 K, producing a high level of radiation (10^5 Sv/h), for this reason a careful risk analysis for the target chamber is among the major safety issues. In this paper, the obtained results of thermofluid-dynamics simulations of accidental transients in the SPES target cooling system are reported. The analysis, performed by using the RELAP5-3D 2.4.2 qualified thermal-hydraulic system code, proves good safety performance of this system during different accidental conditions
