Lazzaro Spallanzani e a geração espontânea: os experimentos e a controvérsia

This article discusses the researches performed by the Italian naturalist Lazzaro Spallanzani (1729-1799) on spontaneous generation. For this is an idea no longer accepted, the theme is often dealt with irony by anachronistic historical reports. In such cases, it discredits that the idea has already been held by many researchers of nature, through many centuries. The goal of this work, after presenting a historical overview of ideas of the main authors concerned with the issue, is to analyze the experiments of Spallanzani on the generation in the context of the Eighteenth Century theories and the controversy between Spallanzani and John T. Needham (1713-1781). There will be also a brief discussion of the epistemic and non-epistemic elements that participate in the solution, or not, of scientific controversies.Este artigo aborda as pesquisas realizadas pelo naturalista italiano Lazzaro Spallanzani (1729- 1799) sobre a geração espontânea. Como se trata de uma ideia que não é mais aceita, ela costuma ser abordada com ironia em relatos históricos anacrônicos. Nesses casos, desconsidera-se que foi defendida por muitos estudiosos da natureza, durante muitos séculos. O objetivo deste trabalho é o de analisar, após um panorama histórico das ideias de alguns dos principais autores envolvidos com o tema, os experimentos de Spallanzani sobre a geração, no contexto das teorias do século XVIII e particularmente da controvérsia entre Spallanzani e John T. Needham (1713-1781). Serão traçadas também considerações sobre elementos de natureza epistêmica e não-epistêmica que participam da solução, ou não, das controvérsias científicas

A French materialist in a pre-revolutionary moment – La Mattrie and ideas about living beings

O presente artigo discute a ideia de vida no momento “pré-revolucionário” francês, problematizando como os modos de interpretação dos fenômenos manifestados pelos organismos vivos podem contribuir com a construção dialética do conceito de ser vivo na contemporaneidade. Nesse recorte, apresentamos a obra L`Homme-Machine (La Mettrie, 1748), caracterizando suas contribuições históricas para a construção dos modos explicativos materialista/mecanicistas (não reducionista) relacionados aos seres vivos.This article discusses the idea of ​​life in the French “pre-revolutionary” moment, questioning how the modes of interpretation of the phenomena manifested by living organisms can contribute to the dialectical construction of the concept of living being in contemporaneity. In this approach, we present the work L`Homme-Machine (La Mettrie, 1748), characterizing its historical contributions to the construction of materialist/mechanistic (non-reductionist) explanatory modes related to living beings
