    Peer Leader Perspectives From a PLTL Implementation in a Hispanic-serving Institution

    Peer-Led Team Learning (PLTL) is a pedagogical approach that has been shown to benefit all students, especially underrepresented minority students and peer leaders in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. In this work, we present results from our study of the impact of PLTL on our peer leaders from a controlled implementation in general biology, general chemistry, and statistics courses at a Hispanic-serving, minority-serving institution. More specifically, we have measured our PLTL program’s impact on our peer leaders\u27 skill development, engagement with the subject material, and sense of belonging as peer leaders. Weekly peer leader reflections analyzed using the Dreyfus model exhibited a consistent set of skills, while those analyzed using the Pazos model revealed a consistent type of student-peer leader interactions, allowing for peer leaders to be assigned to specific levels in the hierarchy of each of the models. Analysis of eight skill-based Likert-scale questions on the SALG survey showed an overall positive shift at the highest level. Independent of the skill or interaction level of the peer leader, we observed several instances of peer leaders acknowledging development in their communication skills, sincere attempts at creating an engaging classroom, and a deep investment in their student’s success. Peer leaders also reported improvements in understanding of the subjects they were teaching, wanting to persevere and solve problems independently, and feeling passionate about helping other students

    Snake Bite in South Asia: A Review

    Snake bite is one of the most neglected public health issues in poor rural communities living in the tropics. Because of serious misreporting, the true worldwide burden of snake bite is not known. South Asia is the world's most heavily affected region, due to its high population density, widespread agricultural activities, numerous venomous snake species and lack of functional snake bite control programs. Despite increasing knowledge of snake venoms' composition and mode of action, good understanding of clinical features of envenoming and sufficient production of antivenom by Indian manufacturers, snake bite management remains unsatisfactory in this region. Field diagnostic tests for snake species identification do not exist and treatment mainly relies on the administration of antivenoms that do not cover all of the important venomous snakes of the region. Care-givers need better training and supervision, and national guidelines should be fed by evidence-based data generated by well-designed research studies. Poorly informed rural populations often apply inappropriate first-aid measures and vital time is lost before the victim is transported to a treatment centre, where cost of treatment can constitute an additional hurdle. The deficiency of snake bite management in South Asia is multi-causal and requires joint collaborative efforts from researchers, antivenom manufacturers, policy makers, public health authorities and international funders

    Analysis of bridge decks for thermal loading for the Sri Lankan industry

    Concrete bridge structures, which are exposed to the sun are subjected to complex thermal stresses, which may vary continuously with time. The magnitude of these stresses depends mainly upon the temperature variations that occur within the cross section of the bridge deck. The nonlinear temperature variation created over the cross section of a simply supported bridge produces longitudinal self-equilibrating stresses (eigen stresses). These can be determined by restraining the simply supported beam and then releasing the restrained structure by reversing and applying the stress resultants. Using the Principle of superposition gives the desired stresses. The resulting internal forces are unaffected but there is a re-distribution of stresses in different components of a cross-section under thermal loading. In a continuous bridge, additional continuity stresses also develop. In this situation internal forces as well as external reactions change. Overall results can be obtained using superposition of self-equilibrating stresses and continuity stresses. The procedure described can be used for any practical situation as long as there is symmetry of the cross section about a vertical axis. A section containing several layers made out of different materials can also be handled in a similar way. In the situation of a complex bridge deck consisting of a grid structure the above results can be combined with a normal grillage analysis to enhance the comprehensive nature of the approach

    Enzyme immunoassays for detection and quantification of venoms of Sri Lankan snakes: Application in the clinical setting.

    BackgroundDetection and quantification of snake venom in envenomed patients' blood is important for identifying the species responsible for the bite, determining administration of antivenom, confirming whether sufficient antivenom has been given, detecting recurrence of envenoming, and in forensic investigation. Currently, snake venom detection is not available in clinical practice in Sri Lanka. This study describes the development of enzyme immunoassays (EIA) to differentiate and quantify venoms of Russell's viper (Daboia russelii), saw-scaled viper (Echis carinatus), common cobra (Naja naja), Indian krait (Bungarus caeruleus), and hump-nosed pit viper (Hypnale hypnale) in the blood of envenomed patients in Sri Lanka.Methodology / principal findingsA double sandwich EIA of high analytical sensitivity was developed using biotin-streptavidin amplification for detection of venom antigens. Detection and quantification of D. russelii, N. naja, B. caeruleus, and H. hypnale venoms in samples from envenomed patients was achieved with the assay. Minimum (less than 5%) cross reactivity was observed between species, except in the case of closely related species of the same genus (i.e., Hypnale). Persistence/ recurrence of venom detection following D. russelii envenoming is also reported, as well as detection of venom in samples collected after antivenom administration. The lack of specific antivenom for Hypnale sp envenoming allowed the detection of venom antigen in circulation up to 24 hours post bite.ConclusionThe EIA developed provides a highly sensitive assay to detect and quantify five types of Sri Lankan snake venoms, and should be useful for toxinological research, clinical studies, and forensic diagnosis

    Iron overload and iron-chelating therapy in hemoglobin E-beta thalassemia

    Whereas hemoglobin (Hb) E-beta thalassemia is recognized as probably the most common serious hemoglobinopathy worldwide, its natural history remains poorly defined. The interaction of hemoglobin E and beta-thalassemia result in a wide spectrum of clinical disorders, some indistinguishable from thalassemia major and some milder and not transfusion-dependent. Partially as a result of this wide range of phenotypes, clear guidelines for approaches to transfusion and to iron-chelating therapy for patients with Hb E-beta thalassemia have not been developed. By contrast, data that have accumulated during the past 10 years in patients with beta-thalassemia permit a quantitative approach to the management of iron overload and provide guidelines for the control of body iron burden in individual patients treated with iron-chelating therapy. These guidelines may be applicable to patients with Hb E-beta thalassemia. Preliminary evidence from our studies of iron loading in affected patients with Hb E-beta thalassemia in Sri Lanka suggest that this disorder may be associated with variable, but accelerated, gastrointestinal iron absorption, and that the iron loading associated with chronic transfusions in patients with Hb E-beta thalassemia is similar to that observed in patients with beta-thalassemia. These data, in the only cohort of patients with Hb E-beta thalassemia to have undergone quantitative assessment of body iron burden, suggest that the principles that guide assessment of iron loading and initiation of chelating therapy in patients with beta-thalassemia may be generally applicable to those with Hb E-beta thalassemia. Further quantitative studies in both nontransfused and transfused patients will be necessary to permit firm conclusions.</p
