    Measurements of CP Violation, Mixing and Lifetimes of B Mesons with the BaBar Detector

    We report the observation of CP violation in the B0B^0 meson system. Using a novel technique for time-dependent measurements, we measure a non-zero value for the CP-violating amplitude sin2β\sin 2\beta at the 4.1 σ\sigma level. We also report on precision measurements of the B+B^+ and B0B^0 lifetimes and the B0Bˉ0B^0\bar{B}^0 mixing frequency Δmd\Delta m_d obtained with the same technique and on a first measurement of the time-dependent CP-violating amplitude in B0π+πB^0\to \pi^+\pi^- decays.Comment: 14 pages, 9 postscript figues, submitted to 9th International Symposium of Heavy Flavor Physic

    Direct and Simultaneous Observation of Ultrafast Electron and Hole Dynamics in Germanium

    Understanding excited carrier dynamics in semiconductors is crucial for the development of photovoltaics and efficient photonic devices. However, overlapping spectral features in optical/NIR pump-probe spectroscopy often render assignments of separate electron and hole carrier dynamics ambiguous. Here, ultrafast electron and hole dynamics in germanium nanocrystalline thin films are directly and simultaneously observed by attosecond transient absorption spectroscopy (ATAS) in the extreme ultraviolet at the germanium M_{4,5}-edge (~30 eV). We decompose the ATAS spectra into contributions of electronic state blocking and photo-induced band shifts at a carrier density of 8*10^{20}cm^{-3}. Separate electron and hole relaxation times are observed as a function of hot carrier energies. A first order electron and hole decay of ~1 ps suggests a Shockley-Read-Hall recombination mechanism. The simultaneous observation of electrons and holes with ATAS paves the way for investigating few to sub-femtosecond dynamics of both holes and electrons in complex semiconductor materials and across junctions.Comment: Includes Supplementary Informatio

    This article reports world averages for measurements on b-hadron properties obtained by the Heavy Flavor Averaging Group (HFAG) using the available results as of at the end of 2005. In the averaging, the input parameters used in the various analyses are adjusted (rescaled) to common values, and all known correlations are taken into account. The averages include lifetimes, neutral meson mixing parameters, parameters of semileptonic decays, branching fractions of B meson decays to final states with open charm, charmonium and no charm, and measurements related to CP asymmetries

    Food stamp recipients, like other Americans, struggle with nutrition problems associated with choice of foods, as well as amounts. This series of Economic Information Bulletins compiles evidence to help answer the question of whether the Food Stamp Program can do more to improve the food choices of participants. It examines the role of affordability and price of healthful foods in influencing food choices and the likely success of any policy targeted at changing food choices through food stamp bonuses or restrictions. It also examines other approaches to changing food choices, including nutrition education and potential strategies drawn from behavioral economics literature. Meaningful improvements in the diets of food stamp recipients will likely depend on a combination of many tactics.     Observation of the Dynamic Beta Effect at CESR with CLEO

    Using the silicon strip detector of the CLEO experiment operating at the Cornell Electron-positron Storage Ring (CESR), we have observed that the horizontal size of the luminous region decreases in the presence of the beam-beam interaction from what is expected without the beam-beam interaction. The dependence on the bunch current agrees with the prediction of the dynamic beta effect.     Observation of Two Narrow States Decaying into Ξc+γ\Xi_{c}^{+}\gamma and Ξc0γ\Xi_{c}^{0}\gamma

    We report the first observation of two narrow charmed strange baryons decaying to Ξc+γ\Xi_c^+\gamma and Ξc0γ\Xi_c^0\gamma, respectively, using data from the CLEO II detector at CESR. We interpret the observed signals as the Ξc+(csu)\Xi_c^{+\prime}(c{su}) and Ξc0(csd)\Xi_c^{0\prime}(c{sd}), the symmetric partners of the well-established antisymmetric Ξc+(c[su])\Xi_c^+(c[su]) and Ξc0(c[sd])\Xi_c^0(c[sd]). The mass differences M(Ξc+)M(Ξc+)M(\Xi_c^{+\prime})-M(\Xi_c^+) and M(Ξc0)M(Ξc0)M(\Xi_c^{0\prime})-M(\Xi_c^0) are measured to be 107.8±1.7±2.5107.8\pm 1.7\pm 2.5 and 107.0±1.4±2.5MeV/c2107.0\pm 1.4\pm 2.5 MeV/c^2, respectively.Comment: 11 pages, postscript file also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLN

    The Atlantic Ocean at the last glacial maximum: 1. Objective mapping of the GLAMAP sea-surface conditions

    Recent efforts of the German paleoceanographic community have resulted in a unique data set of reconstructed sea-surface temperature for the Atlantic Ocean during the Last Glacial Maximum, plus estimates for the extents of glacial sea ice. Unlike prior attempts, the contributing research groups based their data on a common definition of the Last Glacial Maximum chronozone and used the same modern reference data for calibrating the different transfer techniques. Furthermore, the number of processed sediment cores was vastly increased. Thus the new data is a significant advance not only with respect to quality, but also to quantity. We integrate these new data and provide monthly data sets of global sea-surface temperature and ice cover, objectively interpolated onto a regular 1°x1° grid, suitable for forcing or validating numerical ocean and atmosphere models. This set is compared to an existing subjective interpolation of the same base data, in part by employing an ocean circulation model. For the latter purpose, we reconstruct sea surface salinity from the new temperature data and the available oxygen isotope measurements

    Limit on the Two-Photon Production of the Glueball Candidate fJ(2220)f_{J}(2220) at CLEO

    We use the CLEO detector at the Cornell electron-positron storage ring, CESR, to search for the two-photon production of the glueball candidate f_J(2220) in its decay to K_s K_s. We present a restrictive upper limit on the product of the two-photon partial width and the K_s K_s branching fraction. We use this limit to calculate a lower limit on the stickiness, which is a measure of the two-gluon coupling relative to the two-photon coupling. This limit on stickiness indicates that the f_J(2220) has substantial glueball content.Comment: 9 page postscript file, postscript file also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLN
