Optimal Non-uniform Deployments in Ultra-Dense Finite-Area Cellular Networks

Network densification and heterogenisation through the deployment of small cellular access points (picocells and femtocells) are seen as key mechanisms in handling the exponential increase in cellular data traffic. Modelling such networks by leveraging tools from Stochastic Geometry has proven particularly useful in understanding the fundamental limits imposed on network coverage and capacity by co-channel interference. Most of these works however assume infinite sized and uniformly distributed networks on the Euclidean plane. In contrast, we study finite sized non-uniformly distributed networks, and find the optimal non-uniform distribution of access points which maximises network coverage for a given non-uniform distribution of mobile users, and vice versa.Comment: 4 Pages, 6 Figures, Letter for IEEE Wireless Communication

A model for the distributed storage and processing of large arrays

A conceptual model for parallel computations on large arrays is developed. The model provides a set of language concepts appropriate for processing arrays which are generally too large to fit in the primary memories of a multiprocessor system. The semantic model is used to represent arrays on a concurrent architecture in such a way that the performance realities inherent in the distributed storage and processing can be adequately represented. An implementation of the large array concept as an Ada package is also described

Teachers as mediators: an exploration of situated English teaching

Within the context of lower secondary English teaching in South West England, this study identifies in broad terms the competing goals between which English teachers mediate and the explicit and hidden tensions that result. To understand the interactions of competing goals, teachers’ goal-oriented behaviours are referenced to a set of idealised ‘role types’ based on the dimensions of goals, norms, discourses and practices. It is asserted that competing goals, significant to particular educational circumstances, emanate from various sometimes contradictory local, national and perhaps broader social and cultural influences on practice. Yet the teachers observed moved smoothly between goal-oriented behaviours in a continuous and comfortable style, easily and without reflecting any tensions between them. A summary of research on the NASA-Global Atmospheric Sampling Program performed by the Atmospheric Sciences Research Center

The annual variations of ozone near the tropopause are derived from aircraft exhibit year-to-year differences which are not explicitly accounted for by the simple, classical ozone transport theory. Phenomena such as tropopause lifting, interannual variations in the rates of stratospheric-tropospheric exchange and meridional mixing, contribute differently to the distribution of ozone in this altitude region. Ozone encounter climatologies have been represented by global maps which show the probabilities of exceeding ambient ozone levels of 200, 300, and 400 ppbV along flight routes during the year. Continuous ozone records obtained from the GASP system revealed the presence of gravity waves whose wavelength is of the order 20 km. The GASP data cannot, however, be utilized for the evaluation of horizontal fluxes of such quantities as ozone, sensible heat, and zonal momentum; the data are too sparsely and irregularly distributed for the computation of stable correlations. Multiple species data from the unique circumglobal flight of a Pan American airliner on 28-30 October 1977 are discussed with particular regard to the apparent interhemispheric differences in tropospheric species concentrations, variation between the Arctic and Antarctic stratospheres, to possible covariations between species, and to potential source regions for various constituents
