    Onions in South Dakota

    Get PDF
The onion, believed to be a native of Asia, has been cultivated in America since 1629. It is a major vegetable in the American diet, being used in many different ways. By value, this crop ranks in the top 10 vegetables of America. Raw onions are high in vitamin C, as well as other nutrients. New onion varieties and hybrids produce excellent yields. Lack of water during the growing season is the major limiting factor in commercial onion production in South Dakota

    Wonder Gold Bell Pepper

Wonder Gold is the result of a sweet pepper breeding program at the Agricultural Experiment Station, South Dakota State University. Morgold pepper (female) and a special strain of improved squash pepper selected at the Agriculture Experiment Station in 1960 were crossed and individual plants were selected for earliness and concentrated fruit set. Selections in the F5 generation were crossed with Staddon\u27s Select pepper. Selections of individual plants were made from this cross on the basis of fruit shape, color, set, and early maturity. Wonder Gold is a selection from the F9 generation of the latter cross

Peter Piper Pepper - A New Hybrid

    Get PDF
Peter Piper is an F1 hybrid pepper developed by the Horticulture Department of the State College Experiment Station. The fruit is ready for harvest approximately 2 weeks earlier than the other standard varieties being grown in South Dakota. Earliness is one of the greatest merits of this pepper. The new variety is a cross between two lines which were selected out of commercial varieties (Morgold and Improved Squash), for their ability to set fruit under low temperature. These lines were further tested and segregated for the desired characteristics under controlled conditions

Supportive care needs of men with prostate cancer: A systematic review update

    Get PDF
Background: Prostate cancer is highly prevalent and impacts profoundly on patients' quality of life, leading to a range of supportive care needs. Methods: An updated systematic review and thematic synthesis of qualitative data using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews (PRISMA) reporting guidelines, to explore prostate cancer patients' experience of, and need for, supportive care. Five databases (Medline, Embase, PsycInfo, Emcare and ASSIA) were searched; extracted data were synthesised using Corbin and Strauss's ‘Three Lines of Work’ framework. Results: Searches identified 2091 citations, of which 105 were included. Overarching themes emerged under the headings of illness, everyday life and biographical work. Illness work needs include consistency and continuity of information, tailored to ethnicity, age and sexual orientation. Biographical work focused on a desire to preserve identity in the context of damaging sexual side effects. Everyday life needs centred around exercise and diet support and supportive relationships with partners and peers. Work-related issues were highlighted specifically by younger patients, whereas gay and bisexual men emphasised a lack of specialised support. Conclusion: While demonstrating some overarching needs common to most patients with prostate cancer, this review offers novel insight into the unique experiences and needs of men of different demographic backgrounds, which will enable clinicians to deliver individually tailored supportive care

    Golden Delight Tomato

    Get PDF
Seed companies and home gardeners have often expressed a desire for a yellow tomato variety with a compact vine capable of concentrating a heavy fruit set early in the season, but with enough foliage to produce a crop without sunburn. A heavy, early set is desirable to take advantage of the short growing season in northern states. Due to limited space in the home garden, growers are interested in small plants for high yields per unit area. Golden Delight has exhibited many of these qualities in several years of crossing and individual plant selection and testing. As with all yellow varieties and hybrids commercially available at this time, Golden Delight possesses some weaknesses and may as a variety find only limited use; however, Golden Delight is early and produces high total yields for gardeners interested in yellow tomatoes
