    Residual stress development and evolution in two-phase crystalline material: a discrete dislocation study

    Crystalline materials undergo heterogeneous deformation upon the application of external load, which results in the development of incompatible elastic strains in the material as soon as the load is removed. The presence of heterogeneous distribution of elastic strains in the absence of any form of external load results in the building up of stresses referred to as residual stresses. The heterogeneity of strain is attributed either to the presence of multiple phases or to the orientation gradients across the sample volume. This paper is an endeavour to model the presence of second phase in a two-dimensional discrete dislocation dynamics framework, which already contains constitutive rules to include three-dimensional mechanisms, such as line tension and dynamic junction formation. The model is used to investigate residual stress development in single crystals subjected to plane strain loading and then subsequently unloaded to study residual stresses. The dislocation accumulation around the second phase and its effect on the mechanical properties is studied. The orientation dependence of residual stresses as a function of the underlying defect substructure has also been explored. A variety of results are obtained. In particular, the development of stresses as a function of underlying defect substructure is also presented and found to depend upon the orientation of the crystal

    Texture Based Multifocus Image Fusion Using Interval Type 2 Fuzzy Logic

    Multifocus image fusion is a process of fusing two or more images where region of focus in each image is different.   The objective is to obtain one image which contains the clear regions or in-focus regions of each image. Extracting the focused region in each image is a challenging task. Various techniques are available in literature to perform this task. Texture is one such feature which acts as a discriminating factor between focused and out-of-focus regions. Texture based image fusion has been used in our approach in combination with interval type 2 fuzzy logic and discrete wavelet transforms. Performance metrics obtained using this approach are better compared to other existing techniques. Gray Level Cooccurence Matrix (GLCM) method is used to extract the texture. Type 2 Sugeno fuzzy logic is used to combine the images. The fused image is compared with the reference image when it is available. It is also compared with the original images and performance metrics are computed and presented in this paper.     Compositional changes on GaN surfaces under low-energy ion bombardment studied by synchrotron-based spectroscopies

    We have investigated compositional changes on GaNsurfaces under Ar-ion bombardment using synchrotron-based high-resolution x-rayphotoemission (PES) and near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure(NEXAFS)spectroscopy. The low-energy ion bombardment of GaN produces a Ga-rich surface layer which transforms into a metallic Ga layer at higher bombarding energies. At the same time, the photoemissionspectra around N 1s core levels reveal the presence of both uncoordinated nitrogen and nitrogen interstitials, which we have analyzed in more details by x-rayabsorption measurements at N K edge. We have demonstrated that PES and NEXAFS provide a powerful combination for studying the compositional changes on GaNsurfaces. A mechanism for the relocation and loss of nitrogen during ion bombardment in agreement with some recent experimental and theoretical studies of defect formation in GaN has been proposed.P.N.K.D. is grateful for the financial support of the Australian Research Council

    Rubber friction on (apparently) smooth lubricated surfaces

    We study rubber sliding friction on hard lubricated surfaces. We show that even if the hard surface appears smooth to the naked eye, it may exhibit short wavelength roughness, which may give the dominant contribution to rubber friction. That is, the observed sliding friction is mainly due to the viscoelastic deformations of the rubber by the substrate surface asperities. The presented results are of great importance for rubber sealing and other rubber applications involving (apparently) smooth surfaces.Comment: 7 pages, 15 figure

    C-Jun N-terminal kinase 2 promotes liver injury via the mitochondrial permeability transition after hemorrhage and resuscitation

    Hemorrhagic shock leads to hepatic hypoperfusion and activation of mitogen-activated stress kinases (MAPK) like c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) 1 and 2. Our aim was to determine whether mitochondrial dysfunction leading to hepatic necrosis and apoptosis after hemorrhage/resuscitation (H/R) was dependent on JNK2. Under pentobarbital anesthesia, wildtype (WT) and JNK2 deficient (KO) mice were hemorrhaged to 30 mm Hg for 3 h and then resuscitated with shed blood plus half the volume of lactated Ringer's solution. Serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), necrosis, apoptosis and oxidative stress were assessed 6 h after resuscitation. Mitochondrial polarization was assessed by intravital microscopy. After H/R, ALT in WT-mice increased from 130 U/L to 4800 U/L. In KO-mice, ALT after H/R was blunted to 1800 U/l (P < 0.05). Necrosis, caspase-3 activity and ROS were all substantially decreased in KO compared to WT mice after H/R. After sham operation, intravital microscopy revealed punctate mitochondrial staining by rhodamine 123 (Rh123), indicating normal mitochondrial polarization. At 4 h after H/R, Rh123 staining became dim and diffuse in 58% of hepatocytes, indicating depolarization and onset of the mitochondrial permeability transition (MPT). By contrast, KO mice displayed less depolarization after H/R (23%, P < 0.05). In conclusion, JNK2 contributes to MPT-mediated liver injury after H/R

    Management of temporomandibular joint dislocations in the emergency department - a case series

    The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) or TMJ is a type of ginglymoarthrodial joint and its articulation involves both sliding and hinge type movements. Dislocation of this joint is a very painful condition and needs acute emergency care. Most of these acute dislocations can be managed by emergency physicians. However, chronic dislocations can be managed with the conservative approach. TMJ disorders are the rare complications in those patients, which are under antiretroviral therapy and until now, there are only few cases reports in the literature. We report three cases of TMJ dislocations that were managed successfully in an emergency room. No conclusive cause-effect relationship has been found linking the TMJ disorders to the human immunodeficiency virus-antiviral treatment

    Pion gas viscosity at low temperature and density

    By using Chiral Perturbation Theory and the Uehling-Uhlenbeck equation we compute the viscosity of a pion gas, in the low temperature and low density regime, in terms of the temperature, and the pion fugacity. The viscosity turns out to be proportional to the squared root of the temperature over the pion mass.
