    Effect of chronic use of mobile phone on hearing of young adult age group: a case control study

    Background: Exposure to noise from mobile devices is suspected to affect hearing. Objective: To study effect of chronic use of mobile phone on hearing of young adult age group.Methods: The present study is randomized comparative case control study conducted at GMERS Medical College, Dharpur-Patan, North Gujarat, India during March 2014 to August 2015 in which 60 subjects within age group of 15-40 years were included without history of ear disease, ear complains, noise induced trauma to the ear and  exposure to noisy environment. After taking written and verbal consent and approval from ethical committee 60 healthy volunteers using the mobile phones infrequently less than 15 minutes a day were included in control group and 60 healthy volunteers using the mobile phones more than 1 hour a day with individual dialogue period more than 30 minutes at a time in a day, for more than 1 year were included in study group. After all the necessary clinical examinations, all subjects were taken in audiometry room for Pure Tone Audiometry in both ears using Pure Tones of 250 Hz- 8000 Hz Frequencies with pure tone audiometry instrument. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 17 (trial version).Results: The mean age of study group was (26.17 ± 2.65 years) and that of control subjects was (26 ± 3.93 years). The mean usage of mobile phones for study group was 106.0 ± 40.73 minutes and for control group was 9.33 ± 3.65 minutes, the difference was found statistically significant. The mean hearing loss at high frequencies in both ears in study group was 8.47 ± 4.15 dB and in control group was 0.33 ± 1.826 dB that was statistically significant. Out of 30 subjects of study groups, 14 subjects (23.33%) had normal hearing, 32 subjects (53.33%) were having mild high frequency hearing loss and 14 subjects (23.33%) were having moderate high frequency hearing loss. Out of 60 subjects of study groups, 46 subjects (76.67 %) were having high frequency hearing loss (mean hearing loss of 12.17 ± 9.53) in right ear, and 20 subjects (33.33 %) were having high frequency hearing loss (mean hearing loss of 5.16 ±9.143) in left ear. Out of 60 subjects of study groups, 24 subjects (52.17%) with history of tinnitus were having mild to moderate high frequency hearing loss. In 22 subjects (47.82%)  with history of warm sensation in the ear were having mild to moderate high frequency hearing loss. In 12 subjects (26.08%) with history of earache were having mild to moderate high frequency hearing loss.Conclusions: There is increase in mean hearing loss (especially at higher frequencies) with increase in duration of daily mobile phone usage. Hearing loss (especially at higher frequencies) is more marked in right ear (mobile phone using ear) as compared to left ear (non-mobile phone using ear). Mobile phone can have a deleterious effect on hearing threshold. Long term use of mobile phone can impair hearing function. Larger, longitudinal studies are needed on mobile phone use and hearing impairment.

    Outcome of paediatric lateral condyle humerus fractures treated operatively

    Background: Paediatric lateral humeral condyle fractures account for 17 % of the distal humeral fractures. Displaced and rotated fractures require appropriate reduction and stabilisation. Aims: The aim of the present study was to review the results of patients with a displaced lateral humeral condyle fracture treated with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). Material and methods: We prospectively reviewed 30 children operated for lateral humeral condyle fractures at a single institution over a period of 3 years. Age distribution, fracture classification, mode of fixation, time to union, complications and final outcomes at the latest follow-up were reviewed. Results: Total 30 patients of lateral condyle fractures were identified in which there were 18 male and 12 female patients. Average age was 8.07 years. 10 were Milch type II and 20 Milch type I. According to the Jacob’s classification, 05 were type I and 17 were type II and 08 were type III. All fractures were treated with open reduction and fixation with K-wires except one which was treated with CRIF. Average time to radiological union was 6.1 weeks. Radiological hypertrophy of the lateral condyle was present in 4 cases (13.33 %). 3 patients developed a pseudo-cubitus varus deformity. Conclusion: Our results demonstrate that fracture union and excellent final outcomes can be expected in all patients using our protocol, whereby all patients with a displaced fracture are managed by ORIF with K-wire fixation, with the wires only being removed after there is evidence of radiological union

    Survey on Dynamic Query Forms for Database Queries

    The databases used in today’s scientific research and web handle huge volumes of data. Such databases contain hundreds or even thousands of complex relations and attributes. The proposed system that implements dynamic query forms for non-relational data. The DQF captures a user’s preference and ranks query form components which assists the user in making decisions. Query form generation is an iterative process and initially requires user guidance in the form of feedback .The system automatically generates ranking list of form components, at each iteration and the desired form components are added by the user in Query forms. The ranking of form components depend on the captured user preference. The query results can be viewed at each iteration by the user after filling and submitting the query form. In order to measure the quality of the results generated by the Query form, a probabilistic model has been developed

    Dynamic Query Forms for Non-Relational Database

    Cannon ball appearance on radiology in a middle-aged diabetic female

    Pulmonary tuberculosis is commonly presented as cavitary lesion and infiltrations. It commonly involves upper lobe. Lower lobe involvement is less common. Various atypical presentations of tuberculosis on radiology are reported like mass, solitary nodule, multi lober involvement including lower lobes. Atypical presentations are more commo in patients with immunocompromised conditions like Diabetes Mellitus, anemia, renal failure, liver diseases, HIV infection, malignancy, patients on immunosuppressive therapy. Cannon ball presentation of pulmonary tuberculosis is extremely rare and not so common. Common causes of cannon ball presentation in lung are metastasis, fungal infections, Wegener′s grannulomatosis, sarcoidosis, etc. We report here a case of middle year female with diabetes mellitus presented with atypical symptoms with cannon ball appearance on radiology and found to be of tuberculosis in origin. Thus any patients with immunocompromised condition can present with atypical manifestation of tuberculosis either clinically or radiologicaly in high endemic countries for tuberculosis
