    Subarcsecond optical imaging of proto-planetary nebulae

    We find nine of them to be resolved, with sizes up to 3″, and two others to perhaps also be extended. Of the nine, four appear to be elliptical in shape. Thus an aspherical morphology is demonstrated to commonly exist early in the transition between the asymptotic giant branch and planetary nebula phases. The results of this larger observational study, together with the previously published imaging studies, indicate that most PPNs are elliptical (or bipolar) in shape.published_or_final_versio

    Design and Analysis of the High-Order Mode Dispersion Compensating Fiber

    We discussed how to design the typical trip-clad high-order mode fiber (HOMF) profiles to achieve the required dispersion properties based on LP(02) mode, to compensate all modern transmission fibers, without sacrificing other important properties, such as effective area. Finally, HOMF compensating 100km eLEAF (R) fiber has been designed. Its dispersion at 1550nm is -1217ps/nm/km, and the relative dispersion slope (RDS) is 0.02nm(-1). Only similar to 345m of HOMF is needed to achieve full dispersion and dispersion slope compensation of the span, while maintaining effective area above 52 mu m(2) over the entire C-band

    Multiphoton Interference in Quantum Fourier Transform Circuits and Applications to Quantum Metrology

    © 2017 American Physical Society. Quantum Fourier transforms (QFTs) have gained increased attention with the rise of quantum walks, boson sampling, and quantum metrology. Here, we present and demonstrate a general technique that simplifies the construction of QFT interferometers using both path and polarization modes. On that basis, we first observe the generalized Hong-Ou-Mandel effect with up to four photons. Furthermore, we directly exploit number-path entanglement generated in these QFT interferometers and demonstrate optical phase supersensitivities deterministically

    Observation of a red-blue detuning asymmetry in matter-wave superradiance

    We report the first experimental observations of strong suppression of matter-wave superradiance using blue-detuned pump light and demonstrate a pump-laser detuning asymmetry in the collective atomic recoil motion. In contrast to all previous theoretical frameworks, which predict that the process should be symmetric with respect to the sign of the pump-laser detuning, we find that for condensates the symmetry is broken. With high condensate densities and red-detuned light, the familiar distinctive multi-order, matter-wave scattering pattern is clearly visible, whereas with blue-detuned light superradiance is strongly suppressed. In the limit of a dilute atomic gas, however, symmetry is restored.Comment: Accepted by Phys. Rev. Let

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Cor triatriatum is a very rare congenital abnormality, usually symptomatic during childhood, diagnosis in adult age is less common.</p> <p>Case Presentation</p> <p>We report the case of a 40 years old woman referred to our hospital for atrial flutter ablation, transthoracic cardiac bidimensional echocardiography showed an abnormal membrane bisecting the left atrium, the diagnosis of cor triatriatum was fully made via three dimensional transesophageal echocardiography. More interstingly three other cardiac anomalies were associated: ostium secundum atrial septal defect, dilated coronary sinus due probably to persistent left superior vena cava and normally functioning bicuspid aortic valve.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Cor triatriatum sinister in adult life is important to recognize because it may be easily surgically correctable when hemodynamically significant. Three Dimensional transesophageal echocardiography is a minimally invasive and highly sensitive diagnostic modality.</p

    Influence of the splicing on the birefrengence characteristics of the highly birefringent photonic crystal fiber

    Influence of splicing the highly birefringent photonic crystal fiber (HB-PCF) with single mode fiber (SMF) under two different experimental conditions is studied in details. The result shows the birefringence of the HB-PCF can be either increased or decreased significantly, depending on the connection conditions of the HB-PCF end, which are classified as case I (the end is closely butted by another fiber) and case II (the end is in open air). From the experiment and theoretical analysis, it has shown that in case I the retardation change of the spliced section of HB-PCF with 0.2mm in length can be 3.2 times larger than the original value. However, in case II the retardation may be reduced to 72.12% of the original one. The obtained result is important for the design and fabrication of optical fiber devices and sensors based on HB-PCFs

    Transurethral resection of the prostate in Northern Nigeria, problems and prospects

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is the commonest disease of the urinary tract afflicting the ageing male and is the commonest neoplastic disease in men aged 50 years and above.</p> <p>Transurethral prostatectomy (TURP) is the ultimate treatment of choice for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) due mainly to the preference of minimally invasive surgery, long term relief of symptoms and cost effectiveness. It is however not available to the majority of Nigerians in need of prostatic surgery in Public Health Institutions.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The records of patients who underwent prostatectomy in Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, over the period June 2001 to July 2007 were examined. The bio data of patients and laboratory investigations performed were retrieved.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Five Hundred and forty two patients were operated upon, out of which 40 were excluded due to open prostatectomy (22 patients), bladder neck stenosis (16 patients) or bladder tumour around the trigon (2 patients). The age range of the patients was 47–110 years with a mean of 67.2 years. 289 patients (80.1%) had urethral catheter in situ at presentation and 11 (3%) patients had suprapubic cystostomy of which only 3 (0.85%) had combined urethral stricture and BPH.</p> <p>Only 131 (26%) had their PSA measured which ranged from 2–100 ng/ml out of which 39(29.8% n = 131) patients had more than 4 ng/ml and cancer of the prostate and 1(0.8%, n = 131) patient had a PSA level of 4 ng/ml and malignant prostate.</p> <p>Hospital stay was 1–32 days (mean 7.9) and the mean follow up period was 5.6 months (range 0–60) and there were 17.5% complications comprising of urinary tract infection (UTI) 7.2%, Orchitis 2.2%, urinary incontinence 0.6%, atonic bladder 1%, erectile dysfunction 0.6%, cerebrovascular accident 0.4%, myocardial infarction 0.4%, deep vein thrombosis 0.4% and disseminated intravascular coagulopathy (DIC) 0.6% and 1.2% mortality. The cost of treatment inclusive of pre-admission investigations was US615.00(rangeUS 615.00 (range US 300–1,300)</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Despite advances in minimally invasive therapy for LUTH/BPH, TURP is the optimum treatment of choice for the ageing male of sub-Saharan Africa. It is however not available to the majority of patients in this region due to poor health allocation and inadequate facilities and training.</p
