Calibration and comparison of chlorine decay models for a test water distribution system
This paper investigates the kinetics of monochloramine as disinfectant in a 1.3 km water pipe. A novel procedure for the correction of chlorine meter errors is introduced and applied. Parameter estimation using nonlinear optimisation procedures is used to identify decay coefficients for monochloramine models with a single coefficient or two coefficients as used in EPANET. Important difficulties in fitting these parameters which come about because of the model structure are highlighted. Finally, results of
decay coefficients are presented and investigated for flow, inlet chlorine concentration and temperature dependence
Silicon purification using a Cu-Si alloy source
Production of 99.9999% pure silicon from 98% pure metallurgical grade (MG) silicon by a vapor transport filtration process (VTP) is described. The VTF process is a cold wall version of an HCl chemical vapor transport technique using a Si:Cu3Si alloy as the silicon source. The concentration, origin, and behavior of the various impurities involved in the process were determined by chemically analyzing alloys of different purity, the slag formed during the alloying process, and the purified silicon. Atomic absorption, emission spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma, spark source mass spectrometry, and secondary ion mass spectroscopy were used for these analyses. The influence of the Cl/H ratio and the deposition temperature on the transport rate was also investigated
Low-speed aerodynamic test of an axisymmetric supersonic inlet with variable cowl slot
The experimental low-speed aerodynamic characteristics of an axisymmetric mixed-compression supersonic inlet with variable cowl slot are described. The model consisted of the NASA P-inlet centerbody and redesigned cowl with variable cowl slot powered by the JT8D single-stage fan simulator and driven by an air turbine. The model was tested in the NASA Lewis Research Center 9- by 15-foot low-speed tunnel at Mach numbers of 0, 0.1, and 0.2 over a range of flows, cowl slot openings, centerbody positions, and angles of attack. The variable cowl slot was effective in minimizing lip separation at high velocity ratios, showed good steady-state and dynamic distortion characteristics, and had good angle-of-attack tolerance
Determination of ASPS performance for large payloads in the shuttle orbiter disturbance environment
A high fidelity simulation of the annular suspension and pointing system (ASPS), its payload, and the shuttle orbiter was used to define the worst case orientations of the ASPS and its payload for the various vehicle disturbances, and to determine the performance capability of the ASPS under these conditions. The most demanding and largest proposed payload, the Solar Optical Telescope was selected for study. It was found that, in all cases, the ASPS more than satisfied the payload's requirements. It is concluded that, to satisfy facility class payload requirements, the ASPS or a shuttle orbiter free-drift mode (control system off) should be utilized
Measurement of Fungicide Smoke Application by Electron Beam Analysis
Low volume fungicide smoke particle deposits were studied with scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray analysis. Under greenhouse conditions, particles deposited on Rhododendron leaf surfaces and onto inert, carbon planchets adjacent to Rhododendron leaves were characterized by electron beam analysis. Angular particles containing chlorine, identified as vinclozolin deposition, were quantified on a per unit area basis. Leaf samples collected from plants immediately adjacent to the smoke applicator had more particles than leaf samples collected elsewhere. More deposition was measured on leaf surfaces than on inert planchet surfaces. This study increased our knowledge about the effectiveness of using less fungicide to control plant disease and could increase consumer safety and reduce work hazard
Application of EREP imagery to fracture-related mine safety hazards in coal mining and mining-environmental problems in Indiana
The author has identified the following significant results. This investigation evaluated the applicability of a variety of sensor types, formats, and resolution capabilities to the study of both fuel and nonfuel mined lands. The image reinforcement provided by stereo viewing of the EREP images proved useful for identifying lineaments and for mined lands mapping. Skylab S190B color and color infrared transparencies were the most useful EREP imagery. New information on lineament and fracture patterns in the bedrock of Indiana and Illinois extracted from analysis of the Skylab imagery has contributed to furthering the geological understanding of this portion of the Illinois basin
A phenomenological model of the superconducting state of the Bechgaard salts
We present a group theoretical analysis of the superconducting state of the
Bechgaard salts, e.g., (TMTSF)_2PF_6 or (TMTSF)_2ClO_6. We show that there are
eight symmetry distinct superconducting states. Of these only the (fully
gapped, even frequency, p-wave, triplet) 'polar state' is consistent with the
full range of the experiments on the Bechgaard salts. The gap of the polar
state is d(k) (psi_uk,0,0), where psi_uk may be any odd parity function that is
