Countering illegal UAV flights : passive DVB radar potentiality

International audienceSince a few years, illegal UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) flights have been observed in different countries and under various environments[1]. Following these malicious fligths, most of the countries decided to counter such illegal activities asking their main industrial and laboratories to provide an already existing global solution against such UAV activities. However, it seems that up to now, none active system has been validated as the universal ideal solution. This paper will analyse the main system requirements. Then the potential of a passive DVB-T (Digital Video Broadcasting- Terrestrial) component will be illustrated using experimental data for both the detection, identification, location and alert functions:•The expected benefits of such a passive DVB-T solution will be analysed by considering experimental results on multi-rotors UAV as well as on fixed wings UAV.•Furthermore, some limitations of such a passive countering UAV component/system will be outlined. In summary, the passive DVB-T component offers very attractive capabilities for struggling against UAV at ranges up to three kilometres and even more in terms of detection, identification, location and alert. The interest of passive component for struggling against UAV is quite new [2] and it has to be noticed that several papers were dedicated to such an application during the last Passive Coherent Location Meeting in Bonn Wachtberg in 2017[3][4][5]

A new phenotype of mitochondrial disease characterized by familial late-onset predominant axial myopathy and encephalopathy

Axial myopathy is a rare neuromuscular disease that is characterized by paraspinal muscle atrophy and abnormal posture, most notably camptocormia (also known as bent spine). The genetic cause of familial axial myopathy is unknown. Described here are the clinical features and cause of late-onset predominant axial myopathy and encephalopathy. A 73-year-old woman presented with a 10-year history of severe paraspinal muscle atrophy and cerebellar ataxia. Her 84-year-old sister also developed late-onset paraspinal muscle atrophy and generalized seizures with encephalopathy. Computed tomography showed severe atrophy and fatty degeneration of their paraspinal muscles. Their mother and maternal aunt also developed bent spines. The existence of many ragged-red fibers and cytochrome c oxidase-negative fibers in the biceps brachii muscle of the proband indicated a mitochondrial abnormality. No significant abnormalities were observed in the respiratory chain enzyme activities; however, the activities of complexes I and IV were relatively low compared with the activities of other complexes. Sequence analysis of the mitochondrial DNA from the muscle revealed a novel heteroplasmic mutation (m.602C>T) in the mitochondrial tRNAPhe gene. This familial case of late-onset predominant axial myopathy and encephalopathy may represent a new clinical phenotype of a mitochondrial disease

International audienceFor many years, Passive radar have been studied and their capability for enabling target detections at low altitude is now quite well known. Since a couple of years, recent works began to experiment UAV detection by using DVB-T passive component [1], [2], [3], [4] or Wi-Fi illuminator [5], [6]. In this article, we are presenting some experimental results about UAV detection with DVB-T illuminator. According to the configuration, the UAV may be detected directly (due to UAV main body kinematic), by its blade modulation or by both. The last section of this paper will analyze the blade modulation fluctuations according to the UAV trajectory in order to illustrate one potential benefit of such a ‘blade modulation detection’
