    Hierarchical Wigner Crystal at the Edge of Quantum Hall Bar

    We show that quasiholes persist near the edge of incompressible Quantum Hall state forming a Wigner structure. The average density of quasiholes is fixed by electrostatics and decreases slowly with increasing distance from the edge.     Reducing Nausea with Medical Marijuana in Adult Patients Receiving IV Chemotherapy

    The use of medical marijuana has been a trending topic in recent years. As marijuana and THC become legalized in numerous states, there has been more consideration for providers to prescribe THC to patients. One specific population that benefits from the use of medical THC are patients in chemotherapy because of the nausea these patients experience. The question arises: does medical marijuana edibles consumed before IV chemotherapy treatment decrease or eliminate the need for nausea medication such as Zofran in adults over 18 years of age? A literature search was conducted on CINAHL, OneSearch, and Nursing Reference Center Plus using the following search terms: chemotherapy, cancer, marijuana, nausea, medication, zofran, vomit*. Our initial search gave us a total of 19 articles, but only 12 articles met the inclusion criteria. Exclusion criteria included anyone under 18 years of age, marijuana that was not ingested, and any treatments that were not IV chemotherapy. The literature found that medical marijuana was an effective tool to help reduce the nausea experienced by chemotherapy in adult patients as compared to Zofran. The literature supports the use of medical marijuana to treat nausea for patients receiving IV chemotherapy, but the evidence highlights several limitations. First, anyone below 18 was not included in our review. Second, the medication had to be ingested and could not be given intravenously. Thirdly, in states where marijuana is not recreationally legal, patients would need to obtain a medical marijuana card in order to access this medication. This might be a barrier to patients receiving this medication. Lastly, marijuana is not federally funded which may impact the cost and availability of this medication. Based on these findings, there is strong support for providers to prescribe edible medical marijuana to patients receiving intravenous chemotherapy treatment

    Quantitative maps of geomagnetic perturbation vectors during substorm onset and recovery

    We have produced the first series of spherical harmonic, numerical maps of the time‐dependent surface perturbations in the Earth's magnetic field following the onset of substorms. Data from 124 ground magnetometer stations in the Northern Hemisphere at geomagnetic latitudes above 33° were used. Ground station data averaged over 5 min intervals covering 8 years (1998–2005) were used to construct pseudo auroral upper, auroral lower, and auroral electrojet (AU*, AL*, and AE*) indices. These indices were used to generate a list of substorms that extended from 1998 to 2005, through a combination of automated processing and visual checks. Events were sorted by interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) orientation (at the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) satellite), dipole tilt angle, and substorm magnitude. Within each category, the events were aligned on substorm onset. A spherical cap harmonic analysis was used to obtain a least error fit of the substorm disturbance patterns at 5 min intervals up to 90 min after onset. The fits obtained at onset time were subtracted from all subsequent fits, for each group of substorm events. Maps of the three vector components of the averaged magnetic perturbations were constructed to show the effects of substorm currents. These maps are produced for several specific ranges of values for the peak |AL*| index, IMF orientation, and dipole tilt angle. We demonstrate an influence of the dipole tilt angle on the response to substorms.     Occupational lead neurotoxicity: Improvement in behavioural effects after reduction of exposure.

    To evaluate critical exposure levels and the reversibility of lead neurotoxicity a group of lead exposed foundry workers and an unexposed reference population were followed up for three years. During this period, tests designed to monitor neurobehavioural function and lead dose were administered. Evaluations of 160 workers during the first year showed dose dependent decrements in mood, visual/motor performance, memory, and verbal concept formation. Subsequently, an improvement in the hygienic conditions at the plant resulted in striking reductions in blood lead concentrations over the following two years. Attendant improvement in indices of tension (20% reduction), anger (18%), depression (26%), fatigue (27%), and confusion (13%) was observed. Performance on neurobehavioural testing generally correlated best with integrated dose estimates derived from blood lead concentrations measured periodically over the study period; zinc protoporphyrin levels were less well correlated with function. This investigation confirms the importance of compliance with workplace standards designed to lower exposures to ensure that individual blood lead concentrations remain below 50 micrograms/dl

    Frequency-Dependent Shot Noise as a Probe of Electron-Electron Interaction in Mesoscopic Diffusive Contacts

    The frequency-dependent shot noise in long and narrow mesoscopic diffusive contacts is numerically calculated. The case of arbitrarily strong electron-electron scattering and zero temperature of electrodes is considered. For all voltages, the noise increases with frequency and tends to finite values. These limiting values are larger than the Poissonian noise and increase nearly as voltage to power 4/3.     Nonequilibrium Electron Distribution in Presence of Kondo Impurities

    We study the energy relaxation of quasiparticles in voltage biased mesoscopic wires in presence of magnetic impurities. The renormalization of the exchange interaction of Kondo impurities coupled to conduction electrons is extended to the case of a nonequilibrium electron distribution, which is determined self-consistently from a Boltzmann equation with a collision term due to Kondo impurity mediated electron-electron scattering. The approach leads to predictions in quantitative agreement with recent experiments by Pothier et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 3490 (1997)].Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    On Which Length Scales Can Temperature Exist in Quantum Systems?

    We consider a regular chain of elementary quantum systems with nearest neighbor interactions and assume that the total system is in a canonical state with temperature TT. We analyze under what condition the state factors into a product of canonical density matrices with respect to groups of nn subsystems each, and when these groups have the same temperature TT. While in classical mechanics the validity of this procedure only depends on the size of the groups nn, in quantum mechanics the minimum group size nminn_{\text{min}} also depends on the temperature TT !     Magnetic field effects in energy relaxation mediated by Kondo impurities

    We study the energy distribution function of quasiparticles in voltage biased mesoscopic wires in presence of magnetic impurities and applied magnetic field. The system is described by a Boltzmann equation where the collision integral is determined by coupling to spin 1/2 impurities. We derive an effective coupling to a dissipative spin system which is valid well above Kondo temperature in equilibrium or for sufficiently smeared distribution functions in non-equilibrium. For low magnetic field an enhancement of energy relaxation is found whereas for larger magnetic fields the energy relaxation decreases again meeting qualitatively the experimental findings by Anthore et al. (cond-mat/0109297). This gives a strong indication that magnetic impurities are in fact responsible for the enhanced energy relaxation in copper wires. The quantitative comparison, however, shows strong deviations for energy relaxation with small energy transfer whereas the large energy transfer regime is in agreement with our findings.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figure

    Phase Dependent Thermopower in Andreev Interferometers

    We report measurements of the thermopower S of mesoscopic Andreev interferometers, which are hybrid loops with one arm fabricated from a superconductor (Al), and one arm from a normal metal (Au). S depends on the phase of electrons in the interferometer, oscillating as a function of magnetic flux with a period of one flux quantum (= h/2e). The magnitude of S increases as the temperature T is lowered, reaching a maximum around T = 0.14 K, and decreases at lower temperatures. The symmetry of S oscillations with respect to magnetic flux depends on the topology of the sample.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
