Linear viscoelastic behavior of aggregated colloidal dispersions
The viscoelastic behavior of a depletion-flocculated dispersion of colloidal spheres is investigated at different volume fractions of the spheres, using a controlled stress and a dynamic rheometer. Combining the results, we obtain the storage Gā² and loss Gā²ā² moduli over a frequency range of 0.02<Ļ<200rad/s. The measured Gā² gradually increases with increasing frequency, while Gā²ā² almost remains constant, indicating a broad spectrum of relaxation times. To describe and explain the observed behavior of the moduli as a function of frequency and volume fraction in terms of microscopic parameters, a microrheological model based on the fractal concept is proposed. Comparing experimental results with model calculations, we find a good agreement between the two, with physically plausible parameter values
Many heads but one brain: FusionBrain ā a single multimodal multitask architecture and a competition
Supporting the current trend in the AI community, we present the AI Journey 2021 Challenge called FusionBrain, the first competition which is targeted to make a universal architecture which could process different modalities (in this case, images, texts, and code) and solve multiple tasks for vision and language. The FusionBrain Challenge combines the following specific tasks: Code2code Translation, Handwritten Text recognition, Zero-shot Object Detection, and Visual Question Answering. We have created datasets for each task to test the participantsā submissions on it. Moreover, we have collected and made publicly available a new handwritten dataset in both English and Russian, which consists of 94,128 pairs of images and texts. We also propose a multimodal and multitask architecture ā a baseline solution, in the centre of which is a frozen foundation model and which has been trained in Fusion mode along with Single-task mode. The proposed Fusion approach proves to be competitive and more energy-efficient compared to the task-specific one.We would like to thank Sber and SberCloud for granting the GPU-resources to us to experiment with different architectures and also to the participants to train their models, and for supporting the FusionBrain Challenge in general
Restructuring of colloidal aggregates in shear flow: Coupling interparticle contact models with Stokesian dynamics
A method to couple interparticle contact models with Stokesian dynamics (SD)
is introduced to simulate colloidal aggregates under flow conditions. The
contact model mimics both the elastic and plastic behavior of the cohesive
connections between particles within clusters. Owing to this, clusters can
maintain their structures under low stress while restructuring or even breakage
may occur under sufficiently high stress conditions. SD is an efficient method
to deal with the long-ranged and many-body nature of hydrodynamic interactions
for low Reynolds number flows. By using such a coupled model, the restructuring
of colloidal aggregates under stepwise increasing shear flows was studied.
Irreversible compaction occurs due to the increase of hydrodynamic stress on
clusters. Results show that the greater part of the fractal clusters are
compacted to rod-shaped packed structures, while the others show isotropic
compaction.Comment: A simulation movie be found at

Multiwavelength monitoring and reverberation mapping of a changing look event in the Seyfert galaxy NGC 3516
We present the results of photometric and spectroscopic monitoring campaigns of the changing look AGN NGC 3516 carried out in 2018 to 2020 covering the wavelength range from the X-ray to the optical. The facilities included the telescopes of the CMO SAI MSU, the 2.3-m WIRO telescope, and the XRT and UVOT of Swift. We found that NGC 3516 brightened to a high state and could be classified as Sy1.5 during the late spring of 2020. We have measured time delays in the responses of the Balmer and He ii Ī»4686 lines to continuum variations. In the case of the best-characterized broad H Ī² line, the delay to continuum variability is about 17 d in the blue wing and is clearly shorter, 9 d, in the red, which is suggestive of inflow. As the broad lines strengthened, the blue side came to dominate the Balmer lines, resulting in very asymmetric profiles with blueshifted peaks during this high state. During the outburst the X-ray flux reached its maximum on 2020 April 1 and it was the highest value ever observed for NGC 3516 by the Swift observatory. The X-ray hard photon index became softer, ā¼1.8 in the maximum on 2020 April 21 compared to the mean ā¼0.7 during earlier epochs before 2020. We have found that the UV and optical variations correlated well (with a small time delay of 1ā2 d) with the X-ray until the beginning of 2020 April, but later, until the end of 2020 June, these variations were not correlated. We suggest that this fact may be a consequence of partial obscuration by Compton-thick clouds crossing the line of sight.</p

Optical Spectroscopy of SRG/eROSITA Objects with 2.5-m Telescope at the Caucasus Mountain Observatory of the SAI MSU
Ā© 2020, Pleiades Publishing, Inc. Based on observations with the new transient double-beam spectrograph (TDS) at the 2.5-m telescope of the Caucasus Mountain Observatory of SAI MSU, we have determined the types and found the redshifts for six new X-ray sources (four quasars and two galaxy clusters) detected by the SRG space observatory during the Lockman Hole observations at the eROSITA performance verification phase. We show that the TDS allows the spectra of objects ~20m to be taken in 2 h of observations with a signal-tonoise ratio higher than 5 and a resolution R ~1500. The types and redshifts of the objects determined from our spectroscopic observations agree well with the predictions based on photometric data using the SRGz automatic classification system
