Promise Arizona: Building Immigrant Political Power
This case study investigates the history and accomplishments of one organization that is making considerable strides in advancing the values and political interests of the Latino community. Beginning in 2010, Promise Arizona (PAZ) and Promise Arizona in Action (PAZ en Acción) work to empower Latinos and the immigrant community to flex their civic muscle through community organizing and political action. This case study provides a snapshot of the organization's formation, growth, and organizing initiatives and explores what strategies have been central to its success. It is one model of how grassroots organizing can contribute to achieving immigration rights

How far can Tarzan jump?
The tree-based rope swing is a popular recreation facility, often installed
in outdoor areas, giving pleasure to thrill-seekers. In the setting, one drops
down from a high platform, hanging from a rope, then swings at a great speed
like "Tarzan", and finally jumps ahead to land on the ground. The question now
arises: How far can Tarzan jump by the swing? In this article, I present an
introductory analysis of the Tarzan swing mechanics, a big pendulum-like swing
with Tarzan himself attached as weight. The analysis enables determination of
how farther forward Tarzan can jump using a given swing apparatus. The
discussion is based on elementary mechanics and, therefore, expected to provide
rich opportunities for investigations using analytic and numerical methods.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
Acceleration of phenological advance and warming with latitude over the past century.
In the Northern Hemisphere, springtime events are frequently reported as advancing more rapidly at higher latitudes, presumably due to an acceleration of warming with latitude. However, this assumption has not been investigated in an analytical framework that simultaneously examines acceleration of warming with latitude while accounting for variation in phenological time series characteristics that might also co-vary with latitude. We analyzed 743 phenological trend estimates spanning 86 years and 42.6 degrees of latitude in the Northern Hemisphere, as well as rates of Northern Hemisphere warming over the same period and latitudinal range. We detected significant patterns of co-variation in phenological time series characteristics that may confound estimates of the magnitude of variation in trends with latitude. Notably, shorter and more recent time series tended to produce the strongest phenological trends, and these also tended to be from higher latitude studies. However, accounting for such variation only slightly modified the relationship between rates of phenological advance and latitude, which was highly significant. Furthermore, warming has increased non-linearly with latitude over the past several decades, most strongly since 1998 and northward of 59°N latitude. The acceleration of warming with latitude has likely contributed to an acceleration of phenological advance along the same gradient
Integral multidisciplinary rehabilitation treatment planning
This paper presents a methodology to plan treatments for rehabilitation outpatients. These patients require a series of treatments by therapists from various disciplines. In current practice, when treatments are planned, a lack of coordination between the different disciplines, along with a failure to plan the entire treatment plan at once, often occurs. This situation jeopardizes both the quality of care and the logistical performance. The multidisciplinary nature of the rehabilitation process complicates planning and control. An integral treatment planning methodology, based on an integer linear programming (ILP) formulation, ensures continuity of the rehabilitation process while simultaneously controlling seven performance indicators including access times, combination appointments, and therapist utilization. We apply our approach to the rehabilitation outpatient clinic of the Academic Medical Center (AMC) in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Based on the results of this case, we are convinced that our approach can be valuable for decision-making support in resource capacity planning and control at many rehabilitation outpatient clinics.
