Abstract: This work aims to analyze the reduction of water bodies number by the expansion of sugarcane crop advancement in Álvares Florence - SP between 2006 and 2017. The land use and land cover information were obtained from MapBiomas, allowing the comprehension of the changes that occurred in landscape. The identification of water bodies happened through the application of modified AWEInsh in Landsat-5 TM and Landsat-8 OLI images of 2006, 2010, 2015 and 2017. As results, it was observed the sugarcane expansion of 10,000 ha. It was also noted that there is an association between sugarcane activity and the reduction of number of water bodies in landscape, that may cause the habitat loss for various species

In this paper, four Antarctic species of the diatom genus Licmophora namely L. antarctica M. Peragallo, L. belgicae M. Peragallo, L. gracilis (Ehrenberg) Grunow and L. luxuriosa Heiden are described using an electron microscope, based on two collections of samples collected during different expeditions under the Brazilian Antarctic program (Summer of 1994, and 2003 to 2010). Plankton and benthic samplings were carried out at different locations in King George and Elephant Islands, Antarctic Peninsula. The fi ne morphologies of three endemic species, L. antarctica, L. belgicae and L. luxuriosa, are described, including information on structures like rimoportula, poroids and multiscissura. L. gracilis was also examined for confi rmation of its identity. Comparisons with allied species are also provided, as well as their geographic distribution around the Antarctic Peninsula
