Adaptive evolution and phenotypic plasticity during naturalization and spread of invasive species: implications for tree invasion biology

Although the genetic aspects of biological invasions are receiving more attention in the scientific literature, analyses of phenotypic plasticity and genotype-by-environment interactions are still seldom considered in tree invasion biology. Previous studies have shown that invasions of tree species can be affected by intraspecific phenotypic plasticity, pre-adaptation, and post-introduction evolution, and we suggest there are opportunities for new developments in this field. Here, we present a description of the use of quantitative and molecular genetics in tree invasion biology, and propose an approach based on common garden experiments, quantitative and molecular genetic methods to investigate the role of adaptive evolution, phenotypic plasticity, and genotype-by-environment interactions in tree invasions, particularly at the infraspecific level. We illustrate the utility of this approach using examples from quantitative genetic studies of Pinus and an example from a classical reciprocal common garden experiment with Acer species. By using this approach, researchers can test hypotheses about the role and strength of genetic and environmental effects on population-level invasiveness and gain insights into evolutionary processes that occur during biological invasions. Moreover, knowledge of phenotypic plasticity and local adaption of tree populations may help researchers improve assessments of invasion risk

The high vulnerability of Quercus robur to drought at its southern margin paves the way for Quercus ilex

Populations growing at the warm margins of the species' range are more prone to experience higher water stress compared to populations inhabiting the core of their distribution. Thus, assessing tree vulnerability to drought is crucial to improve prediction of forest mortality and species range limits. We quantified the abundance of two oak species (Quercus robur and Quercus ilex) along a water stress gradient in a coastal forest located at the southern edge of the distribution of Q. robur. We assessed their ecophysiological responses to drought during a wet and a dry year and determined their vulnerability to drought under field conditions. The abundance of Q. ilex was high all along the water stress gradient, whereas the abundance of Q. robur dramatically declined with decreasing water availability. During dry years, the level of native embolism was significantly higher for Q. robur than for Q. ilex due to species differences in vulnerability to xylem cavitation. Q. robur had a narrower hydraulic safety margin than Q. ilex and operated very close to the species threshold of hydraulic failure, making it highly vulnerable to drought-induced mortality. In the current context of increasing drought frequency and severity, survival of Q. robur populations will be threatened at warm range margins

Concurrent use of palbociclib and radiation therapy: single-centre experience and review of the literature

International audiencePalbociclib in combination with endocrine therapy increases progression-free survival in patients with ER-positive, HER2-negative advanced breast cancer (BC). In this study, we retrospectively evaluated safety in the first patient treated with concurrent use of palbociclib and radiation therapy (RT) in the Curie Institute. Between April 2017 and August 2019, 30 women with metastatic BC received locoregional and/or symptomatic irradiation at a metastatic site concurrently with palbociclib. The most common acute toxicities were radiodermatitis and neutropenia. Palbociclib had to be discontinued during RT in three locally treated patients who developed grade 3 radiodermatitis and febrile neutropenia, grade 2 dysphagia and metastatic disease progression, respectively. After a follow-up of at least 6 months, none of the patients had late toxicity. Concomitant administration of palbociclib with RT was reasonably well tolerated in our series of 30 patients. More prospective data with longer follow-up are needed to confirm these results
