    A taxonomy of wiki genres in enterprise settings

    ABSTRACT A growing body of work examines enterprise wikis. In this paper, we argue that "enterprise wiki" is a blanket term describing three different genres of wiki: single contributor wikis, group or team wikis, and internal-use encyclopedias emulating Wikipedia. Based on the results of a study of wiki usage in a multinational software company, we provide a taxonomy of enterprise wiki genres. We discuss emerging challenges specific to company-wide encyclopedias for which platforms such as Wikipedia provide surprisingly little guidance. These challenges include platform and content management decisions, territoriality, establishment of contribution norms, dispute resolution, and employee turnover

    Use and Adoption Challenges of Wearable Activity Trackers

    Wearable activity trackers are becoming widely adopted, yet challenges continue to exist in effective long-term use and adoption. Existing research focuses mostly on the use and adoption challenges associated with technical- or device-related issues and respective workaround strategies. Little is known about how personal preferences and other individual characteristics affect use and adoption of wearable activity trackers. In this paper, we present a six-week user study of 30 users using physical activity trackers embedded in clip-on and smart watch physical devices. We describe novel implications of the usage patterns, including the need to help people be mindful of their physical activity trackers, to understand and further articulate gender differences in use and adoption of wearable devices, to incorporate big data analytics in informing and coaching people’s practices, and to reframe data inaccuracy as a byproduct of mismanagement of expectations of the device’s capabilities and its expected usage.ye

    Supporting advice sharing for technical problems in residential settings

    Visions of future computing in residential settings often come with assumptions of seamless, well-functioning, properly configured devices and network connectivity. In the near term, however, processes of setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting are fraught with difficulties; householders regularly report these tasks as confusing, frustrating, and unpleasant. I conducted a series of empirical studies examining both the sources of digital complexity in residential settings well as how people cope with these complexities. Grounded in this fieldwork, I designed a technology probe called Tech Clips. Tech Clips facilitates the sharing of technology-related information by and for people within one's social network. I then conducted a long-term, real-world deployment study in which ten families used the software, while simultaneously completing a series of common computing setup and maintenance tasks. Based on the results of this study, I provide both a rich description of home technology usage and maintenance practices, as well as design implications for software systems that facilitate help-giving between family and friends. The contributions of this research are (1) empirical studies of how lay people understand and cope with vexing technology problems in environments lacking technical experts; (2) the development of a software system to facilitate technical advice sharing; (3) deployment of this system in real-world settings; and (4) recommendations for the design of future tools for facilitating technical help-giving between family and friends.Ph.D.Committee Chair: Edwards, W.     ABSTRACT We examined wiki use in a range of enterprise settings. We found many thriving wikis, but they were a minority of the thousands for which we obtained data. Even an actively used wiki can disappoint some important stakeholders. Careful stakeholder analysis and education may be crucial to successful wiki deployment. We identify a range of success factors, sources of wiki abandonment, and approaches to addressing the challenges. Some of our observations may extend to other social media
