This paper studies the character of Caligula in Alexandre Dumas’ Caligula (1837) in comparison with the image left by the Roman emperor in ancient literarysources. La légende des Atrides revisitée par Marguerite Yourcenar : une approche diachronique

International audienceThis paper deals with what successively interested Marguerite Yourcenar in the legend of the Atrides : if the writer questions as early as 1930 (and probably before due to the delays of publication) the heroic status of Electra, it is first, the figures of Cassandra and then Clytemnestra that hold her attention in her creative works, before she turns to the rewriting of the tragedy of Electra in the 1940s ; Marguerite Yourcenar's play is not studied here either in itself or in its relationship with the critical discourse of the author, but we examine the reflexive gaze that the writer gives in her various peripheral writings on the treatment of the myth in ancient Greek tragedy and on her own creation.L'étude suivante porte sur ce qui a intéressé successivement Marguerite Yourcenar dans la légende des Atrides : si l'écrivain s'interroge dès 1930 (et sans doute avant étant donné les délais de publication) sur le statut héroïque d'Électre, ce sont d'abord les figures de Cassandre, puis de Clytemnestre qui la retiennent dans ses oeuvres de création, avant qu'elle ne se tourne vers la réécriture de la tragédie d'Électre dans les années 40. On étudie ici non la pièce de Marguerite Yourcenar en elle-même ni dans ses rapports avec le discours critique de l'auteur, mais on examine le regard réflexif que l'écrivain porte dans ses différents écrits périphériques sur le traitement du mythe dans la tragédie grecque antique et sur sa propre création
