The impact of green businesses on the building of sustainable communities
Instilling a sense of community within businesses, the basis of our society, may strengthen community building and therefore our path towards sustainable communities. Thus, through a literature review, buyer behavior, green businesses, sustainable communities, and community building have been defined in order to further research regarding whether green businesses have a more significant impact on the well-being of a community. Additionally, six case studies of local Ypsilanti businesses were conducted through applying the Green America Green Business five-part criteria, sustainable community building criteria, and analogical reasoning to analyze whether a business could be classified as a green company and whether it contributed to extraordinary practices in community building
Solving Visual Madlibs with Multiple Cues
This paper focuses on answering fill-in-the-blank style multiple choice
questions from the Visual Madlibs dataset. Previous approaches to Visual
Question Answering (VQA) have mainly used generic image features from networks
trained on the ImageNet dataset, despite the wide scope of questions. In
contrast, our approach employs features derived from networks trained for
specialized tasks of scene classification, person activity prediction, and
person and object attribute prediction. We also present a method for selecting
sub-regions of an image that are relevant for evaluating the appropriateness of
a putative answer. Visual features are computed both from the whole image and
from local regions, while sentences are mapped to a common space using a simple
normalized canonical correlation analysis (CCA) model. Our results show a
significant improvement over the previous state of the art, and indicate that
answering different question types benefits from examining a variety of image
cues and carefully choosing informative image sub-regions
Spectroscopic binaries with elliptical orbits
The radial velocity curves of many spectroscopic binaries (SBs) are perturbed
by gas streams or proximity effects. For SBs with circular orbits, these
perturbations can give rise to spurious orbital eccentricities of high
statistical significance. But tests to identify such anomalous orbits can be
constructed since perturbed velocity curves are in general no longer Keplerian.
The derived tests are applied both to synthetic and to observed velocity

Germination responses of a dry sclerophyll forest soil-stored seedbank to fire related cues
Fire is an integral component of many ecosystems worldwide. Many plant species require fire-related cues, primarily heat and smoke, to trigger germination. Despite the importance of this process, the responses of many Australian species to these cues are unknown. Without this knowledge fire management strategies may be developed that are inappropriate for individual species and vegetation communities. In this study we examined the responses of a dry sclerophyll forest seed bank to heat and smoke germination cues. Analysis was possible for 48 taxa within the soil seedbank with 34 of these showing a response to one or both of the germination cues. 10 species responded to the heat treatment, 11 species responded to the smoke treatment and 13 species responded to both the heat and smoke treatments. Germination cues acted independently for all species considered. Results in this study were consistent with published reports for most species, although some differences were seen at the species and genus level. The study highlights the importance of fire-related cues in enhancing germination of a large proportion of the species occurring in dry sclerophyll forests
Conditional Image-Text Embedding Networks
This paper presents an approach for grounding phrases in images which jointly
learns multiple text-conditioned embeddings in a single end-to-end model. In
order to differentiate text phrases into semantically distinct subspaces, we
propose a concept weight branch that automatically assigns phrases to
embeddings, whereas prior works predefine such assignments. Our proposed
solution simplifies the representation requirements for individual embeddings
and allows the underrepresented concepts to take advantage of the shared
representations before feeding them into concept-specific layers. Comprehensive
experiments verify the effectiveness of our approach across three phrase
grounding datasets, Flickr30K Entities, ReferIt Game, and Visual Genome, where
we obtain a (resp.) 4%, 3%, and 4% improvement in grounding performance over a
strong region-phrase embedding baseline.Comment: ECCV 2018 accepted pape
Decoupled and inhomogeneous gas flows in S0 galaxies
A recent analysis of the "Einstein" sample of early-type galaxies has
revealed that at any fixed optical luminosity Lb S0 galaxies have lower mean
X-ray luminosity Lx per unit Lb than ellipticals. Following a previous
analytical investigation of this problem (Ciotti & Pellegrini 1996), we have
performed 2D numerical simulations of the gas flows inside S0 galaxies in order
to ascertain the effectiveness of rotation and/or galaxy flattening in reducing
the Lx/Lb ratio. The flow in models without SNIa heating is considerably
ordered, and essentially all the gas lost by the stars is cooled and
accumulated in the galaxy center. If rotation is present, the cold material
settles in a disk on the galactic equatorial plane. Models with a time
decreasing SNIa heating host gas flows that can be much more complex. After an
initial wind phase, gas flows in energetically strongly bound galaxies tend to
reverse to inflows. This occurs in the polar regions, while the disk is still
in the outflow phase. In this phase of strong decoupling, cold filaments are
created at the interface between inflowing and outflowing gas. Models with more
realistic values of the dynamical quantities are preferentially found in the
wind phase with respect to their spherical counterparts of equal Lb. The
resulting Lx of this class of models is lower than in spherical models with the
same Lb and SNIa heating. At variance with cooling flow models, rotation is
shown to have only a marginal effect in this reduction, while the flattening is
one of the driving parameters for such underluminosity, in accordance with the
