Established in Nantes beginning in 1780, and stakeholder in the family business of naval construction for the State, Mahurian Crucy left an autobiography entitled LâExorde, detailing his formative years, his activities in the service of the city, and his participation in the company of the L. Crucy brothers until their bankruptcy, and the resulting dissensions with his family at the end of the Empire. This highly personal document is indispensable for probing the private life of one of the personalities at the center of the naval war of the Revolution and the Empire. In addition to retailing his criticisms of his brothers and the successive revolutionary governments from 1793 onwards, LâExorde affords an original approach to the understanding of the operation of naval shipyards
In the 18th Century, the mainspring of French sea power was based on the naval dockyards. And yet, these industrial and port complexes were obviously subjected to an infinite number of temporal restraints that were difficult to reconcile with one another. Moreover, these temporalities didnât intermingle simply at all because of the maritime reforms of the 18th century since they set more complicated schedules on the dockyards and considerably increased the reaction time of these military structures
In September 2016, the Rochefort Arsenal Windmill Association was founded in Rochefort, Charente-Maritime, with the aim restoring a windmill from 1805, created to remove mud from the arsenalâs dry dock. Designed by the Navy structural engineer Jean-Baptiste Hubert, this windmill provided the energy required to power a scraper boat which would prevent the build-up of mud. This project allows us to reconsider what we know about techniques and innovation in the context of a naval arsenal from the 17th century to the industrial era, thus facilitating more coherent communication of our heritage. However, this restoration has raised questions regarding its nature and status within legislation and administrative procedures with respect to sailing, heritage and the environment, and the projectâs ability to integrate the tourism policies implemented by local public authorities
Water in the Green Economy: Capacity Development Aspects
This book discusses needs related to capacity development for water resources management, including water supply and sanitation, in the context of the green economy. It showcases theoretical and practical approaches with proven success. Most contributions come from members and partners within the interagency mechanism, UN-Water. The 11 case studies in this book range from innovative design and delivery of capacity development programs related to water in the green economy, market mechanisms, and quality control procedures supporting capacity development success towards the practical implementation of programs to enhance individual and institutional capacity
Amplicon sequencing of 42 nuclear loci supports directional gene flow between South Pacific populations of a hydrothermal vent limpet
In the past few decades, population genetics and phylogeographic studies have improved our knowledge of connectivity and population demography in marine environments. Studies of deepâsea hydrothermal vent populations have identified barriers to gene flow, hybrid zones, and demographic events, such as historical population expansions and contractions. These deepâsea studies, however, used few loci, which limit the amount of information they provided for coalescent analysis and thus our ability to confidently test complex population dynamics scenarios. In this study, we investigated population structure, demographic history, and gene flow directionality among four Western Pacific hydrothermal vent populations of the vent limpet Lepetodrilus aff. schrolli. These vent sites are located in the Manus and Lau backâarc basins, currently of great interest for deepâsea mineral extraction. A total of 42 loci were sequenced from each individual using highâthroughput amplicon sequencing. Amplicon sequences were analyzed using both genetic variant clustering methods and evolutionary coalescent approaches. Like most previously investigated vent species in the South Pacific, L. aff. schrolli showed no genetic structure within basins but significant differentiation between basins. We inferred significant directional gene flow from Manus Basin to Lau Basin, with low to no gene flow in the opposite direction. This study is one of the very few marine population studies using >10 loci for coalescent analysis and serves as a guide for future marine population studies
