Music and Its Effects on Stress
While stress is a common occurrence within society, some individuals face extreme stressors that can negatively impact their physical and psychological health. College students are a subsect of society that face extreme stress on a daily basis. One of the most common forms of coping among college students is listening to music. The current research examines the effects of music listening on college student’s stress levels. Participants (N= 27) were instructed to complete an impossible mental arithmetic task while under a time limit. Afterwards, participants were given a questionnaire to rate their anxiety levels. During a five-minute recovery period, participants either sat in silence or listened to a piece of music. Then, they were given the same questionnaire to rate their anxiety levels again. A 2x2 mixed ANOVA test concluded that music had no effect on the college student’s stress levels. While these findings do not coincide with current literature, this study can be the starting point in examining how music or music therapy could be used among college students
The Improvement of Verbal and Nonverbal Communication in a Teenage Male with Autism Spectrum Disorder in Music Therapy: A Clinical Case Research Study
This study aims to investigate the impact of music therapy on nonverbal and verbal communication behaviors of a 13 year old male diagnosed with autism. A single-case study design was used, collecting both quantitative and qualitative data. Qualitative data included analysis of the clinician/ researcher’s session notes and personal reflections over six months. Video recordings of three sessions in the last two months of the treatment were collected as quantitative data. The client’s nonverbal and verbal behaviors in the recorde sessions were assessed by the clinician/researcher and her supervisor using an assessment tool designed by the researcher. Quantitative results indicated a distinct increase in the client’s nonverbal and verbal behaviors over the course of eight weeks, which was corroborated by the qualitative analysis. Results suggest that music therapy positively impacted the client’s nonverbal and verbal behavior by providing the client with ample opportunities to engage in non-invasive and client directed music experiences and promoted a positive therapeutic relationship with the researcher
The French Enlightenment and Two Men: Napoleon Bonaparte and Beethoven
Many of the philosophies developed during the French Enlightenment circulated around nature and human emotions. These philosophies were written by men, such as Diderot, in the Encyclopedia. Both Napoleon Bonaparte and Ludwig van Beethoven were able to exemplify the French Enlightenment through their representations of self-determination and expertise at their crafts; however, both men experienced pitfalls that greatly affected their careers. Napoleon’s was so detrimental to his career that he was exiled to a small island; whereas, Beethoven took the negativity surrounding the Heiligenstadt Testament and used these feelings to write the Eroica. This symphony was able to exemplify the French Enlightenment and set new precedents for symphonies to come
Geometry of quantum correlations in space-time
The traditional formalism of non-relativistic quantum theory allows the state
of a quantum system to extend across space, but only restricts it to a single
instant in time, leading to distinction between theoretical treatments of
spatial and temporal quantum correlations. Here we unify the geometrical
description of two-point quantum correlations in space-time. Our study presents
the geometry of correlations between two sequential Pauli measurements on a
single qubit undergoing an arbitrary quantum channel evolution together with
two-qubit spatial correlations under a common framework. We establish a
symmetric structure between quantum correlations in space and time. This
symmetry is broken in the presence of non-unital channels, which further
reveals a set of temporal correlations that are indistinguishable from
correlations found in bipartite entangled states.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
