El rol mediador de la virtuosidad en la gestión de recursos humanos y los resultados del trabajo

In this study, we explore the role of organizational virtuousness (OV) as a mechanism through which human resource management practices (HRMP) affect employee outcomes. We propose that HRMP lead to higher levels of organizational citizenship behaviors and affective commitment by stimulating OV. In a sample of 525 workers, from 22 stores of a retailing company, we found evidence that HRMP predicts OV, in turn predicting members’ citizenship behaviors and affective commitment. By suggesting this new mediator, this study contributes to a better understanding of the causal chain linking HRMP and performance.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Purpose - The main purpose of the present study is to test the association between Human Resource Management practices (HRMP) perceptions, internal context, and organizational performance. Design/methodology/approach - The data was collected based on a sample of 525 individuals from 22 stores, with performance indicators collected at the store level. Findings - The results showed (a) a positive relationship between perceived organizational integrity and organizational performance, as well as a negative relationship with staff turnover; (b) and a negative relationship between employment conditions and staff turnover. Research limitations/implications - The small sample size and the fact that the study was conducted in stores of the same organization doesn’t allow generalization of findings; results are based on data from cross-sectional design, longitudinal data would be needed to infer causal relationships. Practical implications - Managers should take in consideration that organizational integrity, as perceived by employees, can enhance organizational performance and reduce turnover, better employment conditions will also have this effect in turnover. Originality/value - These findings allow us to discuss the role of HRMP and of organizations internal context and characteristics on performance.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Co‐existing monophasic teratoma and uterine adenocarcinoma in a female dog

Ovarian teratomas are occasionally reported in dogs; the rarest type is the monophasic teratoma, composed of tissues originating from only one germ layer. Canine endometrial adenocarcinomas are also rare in dogs and mainly affect geriatric females. This report describes case of co-existing ovarian teratoma and uterine adenocarcinoma in a 10-year old nulliparous female Boxer presented with lethargy, anorexia and purulent vaginal discharge. Abdominal ultrasonography evidenced pyometra and a mass in the left ovary. This was composed of a uniform whitish tissue with multiple cystic structures. The histology revealed an atrophy of the ovarian parenchyma, compressed by a proliferation of well-differentiated nervous tissue staining positively to vimentin, S100 and neuronal specific enolase (NSE), and negatively to keratin and inhibin. The left uterine horn, whose diameter was markedly increased, showed foci of endometrial cellular atypia, evident nucleoli and mitoses, at light microscopy. To our best knowledge, this is the first report of a coexisting ovarian monophasic teratoma and endometrial adenocarcinoma, two rare reproductive neoplasia in dogs

Surface properties of extracts from cork black condensate

The insulation corkboard production generates black condensate (BC), a paste-like solid waste. It is hydrophobic and has the potential to be used as protective coating. To evaluate this potential, coatings were prepared from BC extracts and their surface behavior was evaluated by contact angle (CA) measurements. The CA dynamics were recorded as a function of time; advancing CAs were also registered; the approaches were applied according to Fowkes, Owens- Wendt-Rabel-Kaelble (OWRK), and Van Oss to determine the surface energy (SE) for each coating. Depending on the liquid probe, three phenomena were observed: water evaporation, diiodomethane diffusion into the coating, and rearrangement of the chemical groups on the coating surface, when glycerol was dropped onto the surface. Based on the results from the CA dynamics, the applicability of the coatings against hydrophobic environments was limited owing to its affinity to apolar compounds. The results show that the coating prepared by the toluene BC extract was the best coating. The key data were: water CA of 99.38, total SE (between 37.4 mN m-1 and 40.1 mN m-1), SE polar component (0.1 mN m-1), and the acidic and basic characters were negligible. It can be concluded that the BC extracts have potential for coatings.R.P. acknowledges a post-doc research grant BPD/39333/2007 from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). We gratefully acknowledge Amorim Isolamentos S.A. for the supply of black condensate
