Micropattern gas detector technologies and applications, the work of the RD51 collaboration

The RD51 collaboration was founded in April 2008 to coordinate and facilitate efforts for development of micropattern gaseous detectors (MPGDs). The 75 institutes from 25 countries bundle their effort, experience and resources to develop these emerging micropattern technologies. MPGDs are already employed in several nuclear and high-energy physics experiments, medical imaging instruments and photodetection applications; many more applications are foreseen. They outperform traditional wire chambers in terms of rate capability, time and position resolution, granularity, stability and radiation hardness. RD51 supports efforts to make MPGDs also suitable for large areas, increase cost-efficiency, develop portable detectors and improve ease-of-use. The collaboration is organized in working groups which develop detectors with new geometries, study and simulate their properties, and design optimized electronics. Among the common supported projects are creation of test infrastructure such as beam test and irradiation facilities, and the production workshop.Comment: Submitted to the IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium 2010 Conference Recor

Often political violence in Guatemala is analyzed as if it were identical to political violence in other Central American countries. On account of the desire to simplify this political and economical reality in the public debate, there is a tendency to see the conflict as the result of the international rivalries between East and West. The literature of this conflict deals primarily with the view from government officials and the opinion of the representatives of the transnationals economically involved in the area

Passion and Conflict: Medieval Islamic Views of the West

This article analyzes the representation of al-Andalus and North Africa in medieval Islamic maps from the eleventh to the fifteenth centuries. In contrast to other maps of the Mediterranean, which display a veneer of harmony and balance, the image of the Maghrib is by deliberate design one of conflict and confusion; of love and hate; of male vs. female; of desire vs rejection. This paper interprets and explains the reasons behind the unusual depiction of Andalus and the Maghrib by medieval Islamic cartographers. In addition, this article develops a new methodology of interpreting medieval Islamic maps employing a deconstruction of the forms through an analysis of different levels of gaze. The analysis unfolds into the use of erotic and nostalgic Hispano-Arabic poetry as a lens of interpretation for Islamic maps

Promoting linkages between university and enterprises: the case of the Algarve region

Innovation has assumed an increased importance in Regional Development theories. This communication hopes to contribute to the understanding of the Algarve Regional Innovation Systems, a peripheral region in the National and European framework, where an economic growth is supported by Tourism, which leaves it out of the group of poorest regions when the GDPpc indicator is taken in account. A synthesis of the recent Regional Innovation Strategies for the Algarve is presented including the previous experiences of Ettirse and INOVAlgarve. From this late programme emerged CRIA – Regional Centre for Innovation of the Algarve, focused in the promotion, transfer and commercial approach to technology and knowledge in the academy, consolidating the linkages University-Enterprise. This paper tries to understand the actions carried on by this organism and its role in the development of the region.Innovation; Triple Helix, Regional Innovation Strategies, Technology-Transfer

Puerto Ricans have been writing about their experiences in the mainland for a very long time. At the beginning, the majority of the texts were written in Spanish by Puerto Rican writers residing in this country or by Puerto Rican writers who lived here for periods of time. A careful study of the works published about the life of Puerto Ricans in the mainland shows that they were written in prose
