    [C II] emission from galactic nuclei in the presence of X-rays

    The luminosity of [C II] is used to probe the star formation rate in galaxies, but the correlation breaks down in some active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Models of the [C II] emission from galactic nuclei do not include the influence of X-rays on the carbon ionization balance, which may be a factor in reducing the [C II] luminosity. We calculate the [C II] luminosity in galactic nuclei under the influence of bright sources of X-rays. We solve the balance equation of the ionization states of carbon as a function of X-ray flux, electron, atomic hydrogen, and molecular hydrogen density. These are input to models of [CII] emission from the interstellar medium (ISM) in galactic nuclei. We also solve the distribution of the ionization states of oxygen and nitrogen in highly ionized regions. We find that the dense warm ionized medium (WIM) and dense photon dominated regions (PDRs) dominate the [C II] emission when no X-rays are present. The X-rays in galactic nuclei can affect strongly the C+^+ abundance in the WIM converting some fraction to C2+^{2+} and higher ionization states and thus reducing its [C II] luminosity. For an X-ray luminosity > 1043^{43} erg/s the [C II] luminosity can be suppressed by a factor of a few, and for very strong sources, >1044^{44} erg/s, such as found for many AGNs by an order of magnitude. Comparison of the model with extragalactic sources shows that the [C II] to far-infrared ratio declines for an X-ray luminosity >1043^{43} erg/s, in reasonable agreement with our model.Comment: 16 pages and 14 figures, accepted for publication in A&

    Breakdown of the operator product expansion in the 't Hooft model

    We consider deep inelastic scattering in the 't Hooft model. Being solvable, this model allows us to directly compute the moments associated with the cross section at next-to-leading order in the 1/Q^2 expansion. We perform the same computation using the operator product expansion. We find that all the terms match in both computations except for one in the hadronic side, which is proportional to a non-local operator. The basics of the result suggest that a similar phenomenon may occur in four dimensions in the large N_c limit.Comment: 4 page

    The "True" Column Density Distribution in Star-Forming Molecular Clouds

    We use the COMPLETE Survey's observations of the Perseus star-forming region to assess and intercompare three methods for measuring column density in molecular clouds: extinction mapping (NIR); thermal emission mapping (FIR); and mapping the intensity of CO isotopologues. The structures shown by all three tracers are morphologically similar, but important differences exist. Dust-based measures give similar, log-normal, distributions for the full Perseus region, once careful calibration corrections are made. We also compare dust- and gas-based column density distributions for physically-meaningful sub-regions of Perseus, and we find significant variations in the distributions for those regions. Even though we have used 12CO data to estimate excitation temperatures, and we have corrected for opacity, the 13CO maps seem unable to give column distributions that consistently resemble those from dust measures. We have edited out the effects of the shell around the B-star HD 278942. In that shell's interior and in the parts where it overlaps the molecular cloud, there appears to be a dearth of 13CO, likely due either to 13CO not yet having had time to form in this young structure, and/or destruction of 13CO in the molecular cloud. We conclude that the use of either dust or gas measures of column density without extreme attention to calibration and artifacts is more perilous than even experts might normally admit. And, the use of 13CO to trace total column density in detail, even after proper calibration, is unavoidably limited in utility due to threshold, depletion, and opacity effects. If one's main aim is to map column density, then dust extinction seems the best probe. Linear fits amongst column density tracers are given, quantifying the inherent uncertainties in using one tracer (when compared with others).     Lessons from helminth infections: ES-62 highlights new interventional approaches in rheumatoid arthritis

    Parasitic worms are able to survive in their mammalian host for many years due to their ability to manipulate the immune response by secreting immunomodulatory products. It is increasingly clear that, reflecting the anti-inflammatory actions of such worm-derived immunomodulators, there is an inverse correlation between helminth infection and autoimmune diseases in the developing world. As the decrease in helminth infections due to increased sanitation has correlated with an alarming increase in prevalence of such disorders in industrialised countries, this "Hygiene Hypothesis" has led to the proposal that worms and their secreted products offer a novel platform for the development of safe and effective strategies for the treatment of autoimmune disorders. Here we review the anti-inflammatory effects of one such immunomodulator, ES-62 on innate and adaptive immune responses and the mechanisms it exploits to afford protection in the murine Collagen Induced Arthritis (CIA) model of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). As its core mechanism involves targeting of IL-17 responses, which despite being pathogenic in RA are important for combating infection, we discuss how its selective targeting of IL-17 production by Th17 and γδ T cells, whilst leaving that of CD49b+ Natural Killer (NK and NK T) cells intact, reflects the ability of helminths to modulate the immune system without immunocompromising the host. Exploiting helminth immunomodulatory mechanisms therefore offers the potential for safer therapies than current biologics, such as "IL-17 blockers", that are not able to discriminate sources of IL-17 and hence present adverse effects that limit their therapeutic potential

    A Herschel [C II] Galactic plane survey II: CO-dark H2 in clouds

    ABRIDGED: Context: HI and CO large scale surveys of the Milky Way trace the diffuse atomic clouds and the dense shielded regions of molecular hydrogen clouds. However, until recently, we have not had spectrally resolved C+ surveys to characterize the photon dominated interstellar medium, including, the H2 gas without C, the CO-dark H2, in a large sample of clouds. Aims: To use a sparse Galactic plane survey of the 1.9 THz [C II] spectral line from the Herschel Open Time Key Programme, Galactic Observations of Terahertz C+ (GOT C+), to characterize the H2 gas without CO in a statistically significant sample of clouds. Methods: We identify individual clouds in the inner Galaxy by fitting [CII] and CO isotopologue spectra along each line of sight. We combine these with HI spectra, along with excitation models and cloud models of C+, to determine the column densities and fractional mass of CO-dark H2 clouds. Results: We identify 1804 narrow velocity [CII] interstellar cloud components in different categories. About 840 are diffuse molecular clouds with no CO, 510 are transition clouds containing [CII] and 12CO, but no 13CO, and the remainder are dense molecular clouds containing 13CO emission. The CO-dark H2 clouds are concentrated between Galactic radii 3.5 to 7.5 kpc and the column density of the CO-dark H2 layer varies significantly from cloud-to-cloud with an average 9X10^(20) cm-2. These clouds contain a significant fraction of CO-dark H2 mass, varying from ~75% for diffuse molecular clouds to ~20% for dense molecular clouds. Conclusions: We find a significant fraction of the warm molecular ISM gas is invisible in HI and CO, but is detected in [CII]. The fraction of CO-dark H2 is greatest in the diffuse clouds and decreases with increasing total column density, and is lowest in the massive clouds.Comment: 21 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in A&A (2014

    thesisTango and the national narrative of Argentina are inextricably connected. Tango, which rose from its déclassé origins at the dawn of the twentieth century to become the nation's symbol, has mirrored the roller-coaster trajectory of Argentina, from political crisis to economic prosperity and cataclysms. Tango, hence, has become the well from which Argentine intellectuals and artists have sought for the meaning of argentinidad. Julio Cortázar, who left Argentina in a self-imposed exile in France in the 1950s, also takes part in this practice. What is more, for Cortázar, tango was intimately linked to the history of Argentina. My study examines the Trottoirs de Buenos Aires project, a term I employ to refer to a collection of tango songs written by Cortázar and released in 1980 in France and the eponymous tango salon that operated in the center of Paris. The study of this tango project, which was crucial in the genre's second renaissance in France, demonstrates that the relation between tango and Cortázar, two Argentine icons that are conventionally disconnected, is stronger and more profound than previously thought. Most importantly, the central argument of this thesis contends that the Trottoirs project constructs a space in diaspora where an alternate narrative of Argentina, which was suffering the ravages of the military junta and the Dirty War (1976-1983), can be articulated. In order to construct this space, the Trottoirs project defines tango in its own terms: by foregrounding the imperialist forces embedded in the genre, the project demystifies tango to establish a common ground between Paris and Buenos Aires; and Trottoirs exoticizes tango again in a mimicking gesture of the cultural empire. This double operation renders tango and Buenos Aires in excess (and therefore, invulnerable to appropriation) and establishes the dialectics of positioning (based on the triadic dance paradigm of tango) that allows Trottoirs to not only build an imagined community in diaspora but also to contest the notion of nation. The main achievements of the Trottoirs project is producing and ambivalent and elusive concept of identity as well as creating a heterotopic space where diasporic subjects can participate in the narrative of nation

    A trivial observation on time reversal in random matrix theory

    It is commonly thought that a state-dependent quantity, after being averaged over a classical ensemble of random Hamiltonians, will always become independent of the state. We point out that this is in general incorrect: if the ensemble of Hamiltonians is time reversal invariant, and the quantity involves the state in higher than bilinear order, then we show that the quantity is only a constant over the orbits of the invariance group on the Hilbert space.
