    Get PDF
Plagiarism has grown to such an alarming rate that the academic community finds it difficult to spot an authentic work among the plethora of published literature. Anti-plagiarism softwares have become popular as a solution to overcome this problem. This study aims at analyzing the experiences of university libraries in Kerala which have access to iThenticate and Turnitin, the two anti-plagiarism softwares provided by INFLIBNET Centre on a trial basis. Ph.D theses are most frequently checked for plagiarism followed by research papers. Library staff constitute the largest number among the users while teachers the smallest. Science subjects show least plagiarism whereas social science subjects the highest plagiarism. The paper points out the importance of user awareness programmes and training programmes for the library staff members

Abstract— N-LIST- “National Library and Information Services Infrastructure for Scholarly Content”, jointly executed by UGC-INFONET Digital library Consortium, INFLIBNET Centre and INDEST-AICTE Consortium, IIT Delhi launched in 2010, aims at providing access to selected e-resources to students and teachers of affiliated colleges at affordable cost. The study aims at ascertaining the awareness of N-LIST programme among science and social science teachers of selected colleges, understand the usage pattern and preferences, level of satisfaction, the need for orientation programmes and the various suggestions put forward by the users. The questionnaire method was used for the study. Questionnaires were distributed to science and social science faculty members of five colleges. Most of the respondents were aware of N-LIST and majority of them came to know about N-LIST from their college librarian. It is found that teachers above the age of 45 years access N-LIST more than teachers of other age groups. Those in science subjects access N-LIST more. The teachers access N-LIST for preparing articles, teaching, preparing presentations for projects etc. Though they find N-LIST very useful, they face certain problems such as slow Internet connectivity and lack of infrastructure in colleges and limited resources available in N- LIST. A few of the respondents have suggested that more resources such as Science Direct may be included in N-LIST. It is hoped that programme will be accessible to more colleges with a wider coverage in future

Clinico-epidemiological profile and outcomes of adults with COVID-19: A hospital-based retrospective study in Kerala, India

    No full text
Introduction: The clinical and epidemiological presentations of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in India is still not well explored. We studied the epidemiological and clinical profile and outcomes of COVID-19 patients admitted to a tertiary care private hospital in Kerala, India. Methods: In this retrospective study, we analyzed data of 476 adult (≥18 years) COVID-19 patients admitted to a tertiary care hospital in Kerala from September 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021. The patients were categorized into mild, moderate, and severe cases and followed till discharge or death. Data were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.0 with a significance set at P < 0.05. Results: The median age was 57 years (56% men). Mild, moderate, and severe cases accounted for 17%, 65%, and 18%, respectively. Around 75% had at least one comorbidity, and 51% had multiple comorbidities. The most common comorbidities were diabetes (45%), hypertension (44%), dyslipidemia (15%), and cardiac problems (12%). The elevated D-dimer values among patients in different categories were significantly different, with 74% in severe, 46% in moderate, and 19% in mild category patients. Serum ferritin, C-reactive protein, lactic acid dehydrogenase, and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio values were significantly higher for severely ill patients. Thirty deaths (67% men) occurred during the study period, with a case fatality rate of 6.3%. Mortality mainly happened in the older age group (80%) and those with multimorbidity (90%). Conclusion: Age and multimorbidity are the major contributing factors for death in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Generalization of the findings necessitates well-designed large-scale studies

Assessment of marine fish stocks within India’s Exclusive Economic Zone: Status report 2022

India is one of the major fishing nations in the Indian Ocean, with commercial marine fish landings in the country comprising of nearly 1000 species. A comprehensive and periodic assessment of the stocks is crucial for achieving the goals of sustainable fisheries harvest and management. The ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Govt. of India, is mandated to monitor and assess the marine fisheries resources in the Indian EEZ. In the present study, 135 stocks across 70 species were assessed using monthly length-frequency data. The health status of the stock is projected based on a combination of indicators such as relative biomass or spawning stock biomass (B/Bmsy or SSB/SSB0) and relative fishing pressure (F/Fmsy) estimated using a standard length-based dynamic pool model (i.e., Thompson and Bell Model). Based on the comparison of estimated values of indicators against the thresholds, the stocks were classified as sustainable, overfishing, overfished and rebuilding. The study revealed that 91.1% of the assessed fish stocks have a healthy biomass level (sustainable stocks and those subjected to overfishing), 8.2% of stocks are overfished, whereas 0.7% are in the process of rebuilding
