ROSAT HRI catalogue of X-ray sources in the LMC region

All 543 pointed observations of the ROSAT High Resolution Imager (HRI) with exposure times higher than 50 sec in a field of 10 deg x 10 deg covering the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) were analyzed. A catalogue was produced containing 397 X-ray sources with their properties measured by the HRI. The list was cross-correlated with the ROSAT Position Sensitive Propotional Counter (PSPC) source catalogue presented by Haberl & Pietsch (1999), the SIMBAD data base, and the TYCHO catalogue. 138 HRI sources are contained in the PSPC catalogue. The spatial resolution of the HRI was higher than that of the PSPC and the source position could be determined with errors mostly smaller than 15 arcsec which are dominated by systematic attitude errors. 94 HRI sources were identified with known objects based on their positional coincidence and X-ray properties. The catalogue contains 39 foreground stars, 24 supernova remnants (SNRs), five supersoft sources (SSSs), nine X-ray binaries (XBs), and nine AGN well known from literature. Another eight sources were identified with known candidates for these source classes. Additional 21 HRI sources are suggested in the present work as candidates for SNR, X-ray binary in the LMC, or background AGN because of their extent, hardness ratios, X-ray to optical flux ratio, or flux variability.Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures, 4 table

    A Causal Approach to Analogy

Analogical reasoning addresses the question how evidence from various phenomena can be amalgamated and made relevant for theory development and prediction. In the first part of my contribution, I review some influential accounts of analogical reasoning, both historical and contemporary, focusing in particular on Keynes, Carnap, Hesse, and more recently Bartha. In the second part, I sketch a general framework. To this purpose, a distinction between a predictive and a conceptual type of analogical reasoning is introduced. I then take up a common intuition according to which (predictive) analogical inferences hold if the differences between source and target concern only irrelevant circumstances. I attempt to make this idea more precise by addressing possible objections and in particular by specifying a notion of causal irrelevance based on difference making in homogeneous contexts

Two electrodynamics between plurality and reduction

Comparing action-at-a-distance electrodynamics in the tradition of Coulomb and Ampère with electromagnetic field theory of Faraday and Maxwell provides an example for a relation between theories, that are on a par in many respects. They have a broadly overlapping domain of applicability, and both were widely successful in explanation and prediction. The relation can be understood as an inhomogeneous reduction without a clear distinction between reducing and reduced theory. It is argued in general, when a clear hierarchy between competing theories cannot be determined, the plurality of standpoints should be preserved and the bridge laws carefully developed

Suitability of drought tolerance indices for selecting alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) genotypes under organic farming in Austria

In eastern Austria, alfalfa is usually grown as a rainfed crop in crop rotations in organic farming systems, where year-to-year rainfall fluctuations cause different levels of drought stress. To identify the suitability of different alfalfa genotypes and drought tolerance indices, 18 contrasting alfalfa genotypes were evaluated under irrigated and rainfed conditions at the research station of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU), Vienna, Austria, during 2006-08. The first study year (2006) was considered as the establishment year. Five drought tolerance selection indices were estimated based on shoot dry matter, total biomass yield and biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) data. The correlation between irrigated and rainfed performances increased (from r=-0.17 to 0.56) with decreasing stress intensity from the first to the second year. Genotypes Sitel, Plato ZS, Vlasta and NS-Banat were the best genotypes based on their performance under both conditions. Drought tolerance selection indices TOL and SSI showed high correlations (r = 0.32 to 0.81) only with rainfed performance, and SSI was the index that best identified genotypes with high yield potential under rainfed conditions. Indices STI and GMP were the ones that best identified genotypes with high performance under both conditions

Broad Band X-ray Spectra of M31 Sources with BeppoSAX

We present the first spectral study of the X-ray emitting stellar sources in M31 in the energy band from 0.1 to 10 keV. We find that the globular cluster sources have spectral characteristics consistent with those of the Milky Way object, namely that the spectrum can be described by a thermal model with 6-20 keV from 2 to 10 keV. Evidence of high absorption in some of these sources is most likely an indication that they lie in or behind the HI ring in the disk of the galaxy. We also find one peculiar globular cluster source, with spectral characteristics more typically associated with either High Mass X-ray Binaries or black hole candidates. We therefore suggest that either the source has been wrongly identified with a globular cluster or that the system contains a Black Hole. We confirm earlier report that the spectrum of the bulge of M31 is consistent with the superposition of many LMXB spectra. It is likely that a large fraction of the 15-30 keV detection obtained from the PDS instrument is associated with the bulge, thus extending the spectral data for this complex of sources up to 30 keV. The high energy part of the spectrum can be parameterized with typical LMXB spectra, while at low energies an additional component is required.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, main journa
