The Impact of Special Units in Mainstream Primary Schools: The case of Cyprus

Το άρθρο περιγράφει έρευνα που μελετά τις επιπτώσεις των ειδικών μονάδων στην ένταξη παιδιών με αναπηρίες, μέσα από μια μελέτη περίπτωσης σε ένα γενικό δημοτικό σχολείο. Διενεργήθηκε κριτική ανάλυση της υπάρχουσας νομοθεσίας για ένταξη, παρατήρηση τεσσάρων παιδιών με αναπηρίες στις ειδικές μονάδες και γενικές τάξεις, και συνεντεύξεις με τη διευθύντρια, ειδικές, γενικές δασκάλες και συνοδούς. Η ανάλυση των αποτελεσμάτων έδειξε διαφορές ανάμεσα στις απόψεις των συμμετεχόντων για την ενιαία εκπαίδευση και υπάρχουσα νομοθεσία, που παρόλα αυτά συμφωνούσαν στην ευθύνη της ειδικής μονάδας ως διαμεσολαβητής της ένταξης παιδιών με αναπηρίες. Διαφάνηκε επίσης ο σημαντικός ρόλος των γενικών δασκάλων στην επιτυχία της ένταξης, μέσα από τις μεθόδους διδασκαλίας και επιρροή τους στη συμπεριφορά παιδιών χωρίς αναπηρία. Τα αποτελέσματα εισηγούνται ότι η χωρική μετακίνηση παιδιών με αναπηρίες από τη γενική τάξη στις ειδικές μονάδες έχει σοβαρές επιπτώσεις στην εκπαιδευτική και κοινωνική τους ανάπτυξη

Qualitative doctoral research in educational settings: reflecting on meaningful encounters

In qualitative doctoral research the methodological approach, and the research design are extremely important when ensuring the rigorousness of the work. This is particularly significant for all researchers, and even more for doctoral students who are still developing their research and analytical skills. This paper aims to support doctoral students in their research journey by highlighting some of the tensions involved in conducting qualitative research by unpicking the experiences of two doctoral students to learn from the concerns, questions and reflections on the use of qualitative methodology in their doctoral research projects. The findings reveal challenges and insights with regards to reflection, educational research and the developing identity of being a researcher. The paper discusses these reflections to support and guide doctoral students as early career researchers when planning and conducting qualitative research in educational settings

Qualitative Methodology and Inclusion: Questions and Reflections

Στις τελευταίες δεκαετίες έχουν συζητηθεί ευρέως θέματα που αφορούν τις ερευνητικές δραστηριότητες για τα άτομα με αναπηρίες, κυρίως σε σχέση με το θεωρητικό υπόβαθρο της ερευνήτριας, τον τρόπο διεξαγωγής της έρευνας, καθώς και το ποια είναι η χρησιμότητα και η αξία των αποτελεσμάτων της (Allan, 2010; Kitchin, 2000). Οι έρευνες που βασίζονται στο ιατρικό μοντέλο αναπηρίας απορρίπτονται πλέον λόγω της αποδυνάμωσης και περιθωριοποίησης των ατόμων με αναπηρίες. Αντίθετα, η ερευνητική δραστηριότητα που βασίζεται στο κοινωνικό μοντέλο αναπηρίας αφορά την αντιμετώπιση της κοινωνικής καταπίεσης των ατόμων με αναπηρίες, και έχει διπλό στόχο: την επίτευξη θετικής κοινωνικής αλλαγής, αλλά και ατομικής βελτίωσης των συμμετεχόντων (Kitchin, 2000). Σύμφωνα εξάλλου και με τον Barton (2005), σκοπός της έρευνας που αφορά τα άτομα με αναπηρίες είναι η ενασχόληση με θέματα κοινωνικής δικαιοσύνης και ισότητας. Ως αποτέλεσμα, η έρευνα δεν είναι ουδέτερη, αλλά απευθύνεται σε πολιτικά ζητήματα, απαιτώντας την απομάκρυνση ιδεολογικών και πρακτικών εμποδίων ως προς τη συμμετοχή των ατόμων με αναπηρίες, και ταυτόχρονα αναγνωρίζοντας παράγοντες που ενισχύουν ενταξιακές πρακτικές (Ainscow, 2005). Στόχος της παρούσας μελέτης είναι η παρουσίαση προβληματισμών, ερωτημάτων και αναστοχασμών αναφορικά με τη χρήση ποιοτικής μεθοδολογίας σε έρευνα που μελετά την εκπαιδευτική και κοινωνική ένταξη παιδιών με αναπηρίες σε γενικά δημοτικά σχολεία της Κύπρου. Η έρευνα υιοθετεί θεωρητικό πλαίσιο ανθρωπίνων δικαιωμάτων, με βάση το οποίο προωθεί τις έννοιες της ένταξης και ισότητας ευκαιριών σε εκπαιδευτικά περιβαλλοντα (Barnes, Mercer & Shakespeare, 1999), ενώ ταυτόχρονα αναγνωρίζεται ο ρόλος της ερευνήτριας ως συνηγόρου των δικαιωμάτων των παιδιών με αναπηρίες. Η έρευνα πραγματοποιήθηκε με τη χρήση τριών ποιοτικών ερευνητικών μεθόδων: ανάλυση αρχειακού υλικού και κριτική ανάλυση της ισχύουσας νομοθεσίας N.113(Ι)/99, που νομιμοποίησε την ένταξη παιδιών με αναπηρίες στη γενική εκπαίδευση, ημι-δομημένες συνεντεύξεις με γονείς παιδιών με αναπηρίες, ειδικούς και γενικούς εκπαιδευτικούς, και τρίμηνη μη-συμμετοχική παρατήρηση επτά παιδιών με αναπηρίες που εκπαιδεύονταν σε ειδικές μονάδες και γενικές τάξεις. Τα αποτελέσματα φανερώνουν τη δυσκολία επίτευξης σχέσεων εμπιστοσύνης μεταξύ ερευνήτριας και συμμετεχόντων, καθώς και τον εσωτερικό αγώνα της ερευνήτριας για την διατήρηση ισορροπιών με τους συμμετέχοντες κατά τη διάρκεια των συνεντεύξεων και της παρατήρησης. Πέρα από αυτό, γίνεται ιδιαίτερη αναφορά στον εις βάθος αναστοχασμό του ιδεολογικού προσανατολισμού της έρευνας και στον πολύπλοκο, χρονοβόρο και απαιτητικό χαρακτήρα της

Science learning and graphic symbols : an exploration of early years teachers’ views and use of graphic symbols when teaching science

The study investigated early years teachers’ understanding and use of graphic symbols, defined as the visual representation(s) used to communicate one or more “linguistic” concepts, which can be used to facilitate science learning. The study was conducted in Cyprus where six early years teachers were observed and interviewed. The results indicate that the teachers had a good understanding of the role of symbols, but demonstrated a lack of understanding in regards to graphic symbols specifically. None of the teachers employed them in their observed science lesson, although some of them claimed that they did so. Findings suggest a gap in participants’ acquaintance with the terminology regarding different types of symbols and a lack of awareness about the use and availability of graphic symbols for the support of learning. There is a need to inform and train early years teachers about graphic symbols and their potential applications in supporting children’s learning

Exploring the origin of high optical absorption in conjugated polymers

The specific optical absorption of an organic semiconductor is critical to the performance of organic optoelectronic devices. For example, higher light-harvesting efficiency can lead to higher photocurrent in solar cells that are limited by sub-optimal electrical transport. Here, we compare over 40 conjugated polymers, and find that many different chemical structures share an apparent maximum in their extinction coefficients. However, a diketopyrrolopyrrole-thienothiophene copolymer shows remarkably high optical absorption at relatively low photon energies. By investigating its backbone structure and conformation with measurements and quantum chemical calculations, we find that the high optical absorption can be explained by the high persistence length of the polymer. Accordingly, we demonstrate high absorption in other polymers with high theoretical persistence length. Visible light harvesting may be enhanced in other conjugated polymers through judicious design of the structure

Making Partnerships Work: Proposing a Model to Support Parent-Practitioner Partnerships in the Early Years

Building on Froebelian principles that highlight the importance of family and community, this study explored the importance of collaboration and communication as part of a two-way dialogue. The aim was to identify the key characteristics of a model that would encourage interest and commitment to partnerships from both parents and practitioners. The idea of such partnerships has a solid theoretical background and is supported both rhetorically and by legislation by the Department of Education. However, research has shown that practice often falls short of the ideal, due to reasons such as the managerial discourse that constructs parents as potential consumers and the challenges faced when performance is prioritised over creativity. As part of the study, we employed a mixed methods approach and encouraged parents and practitioners to work together by participating at two sessions with families and children. The sessions provided parents and practitioners with space and time to explore the issue of working in ‘partnership’. After careful consideration of ethical issues, data were collected using pre and post-session questionnaires with all participants, as well as face to face interviews with some of them. Findings indicate that both parties need to invest time and recognise that ‘effective partnership’ is a two way process which requires engagement and dialogue to be able to develop meaningful relationships of trust. The findings were used to develop the ‘CAFE' partnership model which incorporates those elements considered important to facilitate the development of partnerships between practitioners and parents. The CAFE model addresses the gap in the literature in terms of unpicking the key features of a partnership approach, as captured through the lived experience of both parents and practitioners. It also contributes to deepening the understanding of the applications of Froebelian principles in contemporary contexts and the ways in which they can encourage high quality early childhood development and education. Future research should explore how this model could be used to evaluate existing practice and guide the development of current partnership policies and approaches

Risk factors for death from invasive pneumococcal disease, europe, 2010

We studied the possible association between patient age and sex, clinical presentation, Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype, antimicrobial resistance, and death in invasive pneumococcal disease cases reported by 17 European countries during 2010. The study sample comprised 2,921 patients, of whom 56.8% were men and 38.2% were >65 years of age. Meningitis occurred in 18.5% of cases. Death was reported in 264 (9.0%) cases. Older age, meningitis, and nonsusceptibility to penicillin were signifcantly asso ciated with death. Non-pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) serotypes among children 65 years of age, risk did not differ by serotype. These fndings highlight differences in case-fatality rates between sero types and age; thus, continued epidemiologic surveillance across all ages is crucial to monitor the long-term effects of PCVs
