Effects of Oral Contraceptives on The Prevalence of Alveolar Osteitis After Mandibular Third Molar Surgery: A Retrospective Study

The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of oral contraceptives on the incidence rate of alveolar osteitis (AO) following the surgical extraction of both impacted mandibular third molars. This retrospective study reviewed the clinical records of patients who presented to the oral surgery clinic of a university school of dentistry for the extraction of impacted mandibular third molars. Using a database search, all patients were categorized by sex, age, occurrence of AO, and whether the females were taking oral contraceptives at the time of surgery. The patient was considered positive for AO if either one or both sockets developed AO. The incidence of AO among women taking oral contraceptives at the time of impacted mandibular third molar extraction differed significantly from that in the other patient groups. AO occurred in 37.9% (11/29) of females taking oral contraceptives, while only 8.9% (16/179) of females who were not taking oral contraceptives at the time of extraction developed AO. The total incidence of AO among females was 13.0% (27/208). The total incidence of AO among the 363 males and females presenting for mandibular third molar extractions was 13.8%. Females who are taking oral contraceptives at the time of impacted mandibular third molar extraction are at a higher risk of developing AO following extraction

Self-consistent analysis of carrier-transport and carrier-capture dynamics in quantum cascade intersubband semiconductor lasers

A methodology for the self-consistent analysis of carrier transport and carrier capture aspects of the dynamics of quantum cascade intersubband semiconductor lasers is described in this paper. The approach is used to analyze two prototype quantum cascade lasers. The self-consistent analysis incorporates the calculation of the electron densities and temperatures in each subband, together with the intersubband relaxation time. In the calculation of the relaxation time, we take into account the electron interaction with polar optical and acoustic phonons, as well as electron degeneracy. In addition, we also calculate the capture time, considering backward processes that play a role in the electron transition from an injection into an active region. Examining the importance of Aberdeenshire (UK) coastal waters for North Sea bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncates)

Using land- and vessel-based surveys, data on the relative abundance, distribution and habitat use of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) in Aberdeenshire waters were collected between 1999 and 2001. Bottlenose dolphins were present throughout the year, with peak abundance during the months of March to May. The occurrence of calves was seasonal, With the proportion of calves highest during the spring months. Foraging behaviour was recorded mainly in the vicinity of Aberdeen harbour. Dolphins photographed in Aberdeenshire waters were successfully matched and confirmed as Moray Firth animals. The results of the present study suggest that Moray Firth bottlenose dolphins utilize Aberdeenshire waters more frequently than previously reported. Aberdeen harbour is apparently an important feeding area, and Aberdeenshire waters are regularly used by another-calf pairs. This has important management implications since this area of coastline does not currently form part of the designated Special Area of Conservation (SAC) for this population

Generosity is a vague term and can mean a variety of different things across different cultures and generations. This essay seeks to delve deeper into what generosity really is. A few different definitions are presented and synthesized. Following that is a discussion of how generosity’s root is found in religion. This claim is based on scientific research and is not exclusive of any religion. Because of this connection, generosity is not contingent on material wealth and can still be expressed even amidst poverty. Generosity is also found to have a direct correlation with mental and physical health based on scientific research as well. This relationship has major implications for today’s society as mental and physical illnesses are becoming more and more common. Ultimately, generosity makes a massive impact on a community and therefore should be a daily practice

The Financing Activities of Canadian Small and Medium-sized Enterprises in Tourism Industries

Though there has been substantial research on small and medium sized enterprises in tourism, information on access to financing for these businesses is limited. Given the importance of financing to the success and growth of a business, this report investigates the financing activities of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in tourism industries and assesses whether this group of SMEs faces unique financing obstacles. Using data from Statistics Canada’s, Survey on Financing of Small and Medium Enterprises, this report finds that Canadian SMEs in tourism industries, although less likely to request external financing, were significantly less likely to be approved for external financing compared to SMEs in non-tourism industries. SMEs in the accommodation industry, which required the most capital, had the most difficulty, receiving on average, less than half of the debt financing they requested in 2007
