Dynamics of self-threading ring polymers in a gel
We study of the dynamics of ring polymers confined to diffuse in a background
gel at low concentrations. We do this in order to probe the inter-play between
topology and dynamics in ring polymers. We develop an algorithm that takes into
account the possibility that the rings hinder their own motion by passing
through themselves, i.e. "self-threading". Our results suggest that the number
of self-threadings scales extensively with the length of the rings and that
this is substantially independent of the details of the model. The slowing down
of the rings' dynamics is found to be related to the fraction of segments that
can contribute to the motion. Our results give a novel perspective on the
motion of ring polymers in gel, for which a complete theory is still lacking,
and may help us to understand the irreversible trapping of ring polymers in gel
electrophoresis experiments.Comment: 11 pages,14 figures, Soft Matter 201
MICROSPECTROSCOPY
We propose a new method of studying Colloidal Crystals. The method consists in an association of a reflecting microscope with a monochromatic illumination. Using this experimental set-up we obtained the spectra of Bragg reflections from bcc and fcc single crystals coexisting in the same sample of Colloidal Crystal. We also point out that shapes of single crystals, in equilibrium with the liquid phase, can be deduced from Pendellösung fringes occurring in spectra of Bragg reflections
THIN COLLOIDAL CRYSTALS : STRUCTURES AND OPTICAL PROPERTIES
When colloidal crystals are confined in a narrow wedge shaped gap between a pair of glass flats, we observe a series of structural transitions. These transitions consist in a change in the number of layers and also in their crystalline structure. Because the refractive index varies in space, thin colloidal crystals optically act as phase gratings and show very bright colors
OPTICAL PROPERTIES OF BLUE PHASE I : MEASUREMENTS OF THE ORDER PARAMETER
Hornreich et al.We apply the dynamical theory of diffraction to Blue Phase I. Using spectra we have got with large monocrystals without defect growth on glass surfaces, we compare them to the theoretical ones and obtain the first direct measurement of the Fourier component in the direction of the order parameter of BPI. At least, we show that those results are in agreement with the theory proposed by R.M. Hornreich et al
DISLOCATION MOTION IN COLLOIDAL CRYSTALS
The plastic flow of colloidal crystals can only occur through the motion of defects of an imperfect lattice embedded in a liquid matrix. This motion is discussed in the case of a screw dislocation. We then show that it is possible to establish a relation between the effective viscosity of the plastic flow and the viscosity of the solvent
