The Theologians of Lutheran Orthodoxy on Polygamy, Celibacy, and Divorce

    Get PDF
Successive polygamy-remarriage after the death of one\u27s spouse-is licit for all Christians, but simultaneous polygamy is not. Both polyandry and polygyny are wrong, but the former is even less defensible. In the Old Testament, God bore with the polygamy of the patriarchs. While their polygamous unions contradicted the monogamous ideal of the divine institution, the patriarchs were not adulterers, and their wives were not whores. They must have had a revelation, or at least a consciousness, that God had dispensed them from the requirement of monogamy. The prophets do not condemn polygamy. Not fleshly lust, but the ardent desire for the birth of the promised Seed of the Woman motivated the polygamous patriarchs and kings

After describing the private character of the Eucharist, Dr. Piepkorn defends its public character with four observations. (1) The humanity of Jesus Christ is present and this unites Him and the worshiper with all humanity. (2) The Christ who is present is the Creator of all things. (3) Christ and His Father have compassion for the whole world and employ many worldly means to bring life to people. (4) The Eucharist is designed to prepare us for service to the world

During Philipp Nicolai\u27s lifetime the company of ministers in the city of Zurich referred to him as this miserable person who goes thrashing around and biting like another wild boar, altogether without reason or Christian modesty. Others of his foes called him a lunatic who ought to be chained to a wall, and could not resist the temptation of twisting his surname Nicolai into Nicolaitan. His admirers, on the other hand, saw in him a second Chrysostom

The Primitive Baptists of North America

By the beginning of the 1820s a strict particularism had been reigning without a serious challenge among the Baptists of the American South for nearly two generations. In the course of the next 15 years their associations and churches felt the full divisive force of the Baptist version of the new measures issue - mission societies, tract societies, Sunday schools, religious fairs and festivals to raise funds for the church\u27s work, temperance societies, and theological seminaries
