Que signifie « être libre » ? Le cas Henri de Gand

Le débat sur la nature de l’action humaine qui éclata entre la fin du xiiie et le début du xive siècle est l’un des sujets les plus étudiés de la philosophie médiévale. Mais, malgré l’abondance de la littérature critique à ce sujet, la nature exacte du désaccord entre les « intellectualistes » et les volontaristes demeure peu claire. Les parties prenantes du débat ont-elles simplement divergé quant à la fondation psychologique de l’action libre de l’homme ? Ou sont-elles au contraire en désaccord sur ce que signifie « être libre » ? Autrement dit : le débat porte-t-il sur le meilleur moyen de rendre compte du fait que les êtres humains sont des agents libres ou existe-t-il un désaccord plus profond sur l’objet même du débat ? Cette brève contribution analyse la position d’Henri de Gand, l’un des champions du parti volontariste, sur la nature de la liberté (ratio libertatis). En examinant la question 5 du Quodlibet XIV d’Henri, cet article désire jeter les bases d’une meilleure compréhension de la notion (ou des notions) de liberté au centre des débats du Moyen Âge tardif.The debate about the nature of human agency that erupted at the end of the thirteenth and the beginning of the fourteenth centuries is one of the most studied topics in medieval philosophy. But despite the exuberant secondary literature the scope of the disagreement between the so-called intellectualist and voluntarists remains unclear. Do the opposing parties merely disagree about the psychological foundation of human free agency? Or do they also disagree more fundamentaly about what it means to be free? This short contribution examines what Henry of Ghent, one of the champions of the voluntarist cause, thought about the nature of freedom (ratio libertatis). By examining q. 5 of Henry’s Quodlibet XIV, the paper hopes to set the stage for a more profound understanding of the notion(s) of freedom underlying the late medieval debates over human free agency

In Defence of Anachronism

Dans cette contribution, je soutiens que l’histoire de la philosophie a beaucoup à gagner d’un engagement avec les questions et les outils conceptuels de la philosophie (analytique) contemporaine. En particulier, je réfute l’idée qu’entrer en dialogue avec la philosophie contemporaine mène inévitablement l’historien de la philosophie à l’anachronisme. Quels que soient les risques d’échec, ils semblent être contrebalancés par les gains de connaissance rendus possibles par un tel dialogue. Les partisans d’une approche « purement » historique de l’histoire de la philosophie se défendent en soutenant que l’histoire de la philosophie ne peut et ne doit être étudiée que selon ses propres critères et indépendamment de nos intérêts philosophiques actuels. J’essaie de montrer que ceci est une illusion.In this short contribution I argue that the history of philosophy has much to gain from an engagement with the questions and conceptual tools of contemporary (analytic) philosophy. In particular I argue against the view that the historian of philosophy’s engagement with contemporary philosophy necessarily leads to anachronism. Whatever the risks of failure, they seem to be outweighed by the potential for insight. Advocates of a “purely” historical approach to the history of philosophy defend their approach by pointing to the idea that the history of philosophy can and should be studied on its own terms and independently of our current philosophical interests. I try to show that this is an illusion
