    Lessons from Flanders: drivers & pitfalls of cooperation on a business park

    For almost ten years several companies located in De Zaubeek Business Park in Flanders have been collaborating with the goal of creating a more sustainable industrial zone. Many initiatives have been developed in this business park, many successful, but some clearly pointed to constraints that require action beyond the reach of the companies or the business association. The former chairman of the association has been involved in several of these initiatives and we asked him to tell his story

    Neural Biclustering in Gene Expression Analysis

    Clustering in high dimensional spaces is a very difficult task. Dealing with DNA microarrays is even more difficult because gene subsets are coregulated and coexpressed only under specific conditions. Biclusterng addresses the problem of finding such submanifolds by exploiting both gene and condition (tissue) clustering. The paper proposes a self-organizing neural network, GH EXIN, which builds a hierarchical tree by adapting its architecture to data. It is integrated in a framework in which gene and tissue clustering are alternated and controlled by the quality of the bicluster. Examples of the approach and a biological validation of results are also given

    Performance of Optically Readout GEM-based TPC with a 55Fe source

    Optical readout of large Time Projection Chambers (TPCs) with multiple Gas Electron Multipliers (GEMs) amplification stages has shown to provide very interesting performances for high energy particle tracking. Proposed applications for low-energy and rare event studies, such as Dark Matter search, ask for demanding performance in the keV energy range. The performance of such a readout was studied in details as a function of the electric field configuration and GEM gain by using a 55^{55}Fe source within a 7 litre sensitive volume detector developed as a part of the R\&D for the CYGNUS project. Results reported in this paper show that the low noise level of the sensor allows to operate with a 2~keV threshold while keeping a rate of fake-events lesser than 10 per year. In this configuration, a detection efficiency well above 95\% along with an energy resolution (σ\sigma) of 18\% is obtained for the 5.9 keV photons, demonstrating the very promising capabilities of this technique

    A 1 m3^3 Gas Time Projection Chamber with Optical Readout for Directional Dark Matter Searches: the CYGNO Experiment

    The aim of the CYGNO project is the construction and operation of a 1~m3^3 gas TPC for directional dark matter searches and coherent neutrino scattering measurements, as a prototype toward the 100-1000~m3^3 (0.15-1.5 tons) CYGNUS network of underground experiments. In such a TPC, electrons produced by dark-matter- or neutrino-induced nuclear recoils will drift toward and will be multiplied by a three-layer GEM structure, and the light produced in the avalanche processes will be readout by a sCMOS camera, providing a 2D image of the event with a resolution of a few hundred micrometers. Photomultipliers will also provide a simultaneous fast readout of the time profile of the light production, giving information about the third coordinate and hence allowing a 3D reconstruction of the event, from which the direction of the nuclear recoil and consequently the direction of the incoming particle can be inferred. Such a detailed reconstruction of the event topology will also allow a pure and efficient signal to background discrimination. These two features are the key to reach and overcome the solar neutrino background that will ultimately limit non-directional dark matter searches.Comment: 5 page, 7 figures, contribution to the Conference Records of 2018 IEEE NSS/MI

    Differences in pigment circadian rhythmicity in green- and red-leafed tree species in the sun and shade

    Light flux and quality are crucial factor for setting endogenous plant circadian rhythms. Evaluating the daily rhythmicity of leaf chlorophyll content is an effective method to monitor the plant physiological endogenous clock in response to environmental signals such as light availability/quality. Here, we used a leaf-clip sensor to monitor diurnal rhythms in the content of chlorophyll and flavonoids such as flavonols and anthocyanins in three green- (Ailanthus altissima, Tilia platyphyllos and Platanus x acerifolia) and two red-leafed (Acer platanoides cv. Crimson King and Prunus cerasifera var. pissardii) tree species, adapted to sun (L) or shade (S). Significant differences in chlorophyll content (Chl) and its variations during the day were observed among treatments in all the analyzed species. S-plants had more Chl than L-plants irrespective of leaf color, and Chl variations were more distinct during the day than in L-plants. In particular, contents were lowest in the morning (9:00) and in the middle of the day (at 12:00 and 15:00), and the highest at dusk (21:00). The less evident trends in Chl variation in L-plants were attributed to a decrease in Chl content in high light, which likely masked any increases in the shaded counterparts during the afternoon. Daily flavonol levels did not vary no notably during the day. In sun-exposed red leaves, anthocyanins partially screened mesophyll cells from incident light, and its levels were similar to the Chl dynamics in the shaded counterparts. This study provides new bases for further work on endogenous rhythms of plant pigments and improves our understanding of plant physiology in the context of day/night rhythmicity

    Beneficial contribution to glucose homeostasis by an agro-food waste product rich in abscisic acid. A results from a randomized controlled trial

    The control of glucose homeostasis represents the primary goal for the prevention and management of diabetes and prediabetes. In recent decades, the hypoglycemic hormone abscisic acid (ABA) has attracted considerable interest in the scientific literature. In this regard, the high ABA concentration in immature fruits led us to consider these food matrices as candidates for diabetes control. Therefore, the beneficial efficacy of a nutraceutical formulation based on thinned nectarines (TNs) rich in ABA was tested through a three-month, three-arm, parallel-group, randomized controlled trial (RCT) conducted on sixty-one patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). After 3 months, both the treatments with low doses of TN (500 mg 3 times/day) and high doses of TN (750 mg 3 times/day) showed a significant reduction in glycemic parameters compared to baseline. Treatment with low doses of TN showed a greater insulin-sparing effect (fasting plasma insulin, FPI: −29.2%, p < 0.05 vs. baseline) compared to the high-dose group (FPI: −16.5%, p < 0.05 vs. baseline). Moreover, a significant correlation between glycemia and ABA plasmatic levels was observed for both intervention groups at baseline and after 3 months. Overall, our data reasonably support TN as a promising and innovative nutraceutical product able to contribute to the management of glucose homeostasis

    Phosphorus species in sequentially extracted soil organic matter fractions

    The majority of organic P (Porg) in soil is considered to be part of soil organic matter (SOM) associations, but its chemical nature is largely ‘unresolved’. In this study, we investigated the Porg composition in different SOM fractions of a Gleysol soil using the Humeomics sequential chemical fractionation (SCF) procedure combined with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. In summary, SCF procedure with subsequent NaOH-EDTA extraction of the soil residue extracted a total of 1769 mg P/kgsoil compared to 1682 mg P/kgsoil of a single-step NaOH-EDTA extraction. Approximately 38 % of the extracted Porg was present in the form of the unresolved Porg pool, which was represented by one or two underlying broad signals in the phosphomonoester region of solution 31P NMR spectra. The SCF revealed that phosphomonoesters were recovered in each fraction: 47 % of the unresolved phosphomonoesters were associated with the SOM fraction released by breaking ester bonds (40 %) and ether bonds (7 %), whereas about 30 % of this unresolved Porg pool appeared in the SOM fraction closely associated with the soil mineral phase. Furthermore, the extractability of inositol phosphates (IP) was increased from 312 mg P/kgsoil to 534 mg P/kgsoil (factor 1.7) using the SCF procedure compared to a single-step NaOH-EDTA extraction. Previous studies have reported the presence of IP in molecular size fractions greater than 10 kDa. Our findings on the removal of IP with the fractionation of the SOM could explain the presence of IP in these large associations. We demonstrate that major pools of Porg are closely associated with SOM structures, comprising a diverse array of chemical species and bonding types. These results forward our understanding of Porg stabilisation, P transformation, and P cycling in terrestrial ecosystems towards an association point of view
