The cult of St Martin in Ireland dates at least from the sixth century and was celebrated at Bangor, where Colombanus was trained, in Iona, founded by Columba in 563 and in Armagh, which subsequently became the seat of the Primate of Ireland. Veneration for St Martin is found in seventh-century texts such as the letters of Columbanus, the Life of Columbanus, written by Jonas of Bobbio, and the Life of Columba, written by Adomnán of Iona. Some hymns in honour of Martin are also linked with Adomnán. The Collectio canonum hibernensis written at the beginning of the eighth century invokes the authority of Martin, considered as equal to the great Fathers of the Church. The Book of Armagh, written at the beginning of the ninth century, contains the works of Sulpicius Severus in an early form. The fictitious links between Patrick and Tours claimed in the Tripartite Life of Patrick, also written in the ninth century, reflect a strong devotion for St Martin at that time. Finally the Céli Dé movement, from the eighth century onwards, also claims strong links with Martin. These networks were still alive and strong at the time of the Norman Conquest in the 1170s
A survey of Identification and mitigation of Machine Learning algorithmic biases in Image Analysis
The problem of algorithmic bias in machine learning has gained a lot of
attention in recent years due to its concrete and potentially hazardous
implications in society. In much the same manner, biases can also alter modern
industrial and safety-critical applications where machine learning are based on
high dimensional inputs such as images. This issue has however been mostly left
out of the spotlight in the machine learning literature. Contrarily to societal
applications where a set of proxy variables can be provided by the common sense
or by regulations to draw the attention on potential risks, industrial and
safety-critical applications are most of the times sailing blind. The variables
related to undesired biases can indeed be indirectly represented in the input
data, or can be unknown, thus making them harder to tackle. This raises serious
and well-founded concerns towards the commercial deployment of AI-based
solutions, especially in a context where new regulations clearly address the
issues opened by undesired biases in AI. Consequently, we propose here to make
an overview of recent advances in this area, firstly by presenting how such
biases can demonstrate themselves, then by exploring different ways to bring
them to light, and by probing different possibilities to mitigate them. We
finally present a practical remote sensing use-case of industrial Fairness

Since its disclosure by the local press in 2013, the large-scale development project “Nusa Benoa,” based in the Benoa Bay Reclamation area, has met with unprecedented opposition. Some Balinese are even threatening to go as far as a puputan (fight to death) should the project be effectively carried out. Sociologically highly diversified and united in the “ForBALI” NGO, the opposition has taken advantage of past experience gained in former tourism-related conflicts to not only Balinize, but also nationalize and even internationalize, the conflict. While the project planner emphasizes its natural and economic benefits, resistance crystalizes around its environmental and religious aspects. Concurrently, control of the local economy is a central concern, as more and more Balinese see themselves as being expropriated from their own land by outside investors. Furthermore, the background of the contestation is identity-related because of the structural changes undergone by their society – due in particular to the increasing influx of migrants, most of them Muslim, but also to the 2002 and 2005 Islamic attacks – have exacerbated the Balinese feeling of vulnerablility as an ethnic and religious minority within the Indonesian nation-state
