    806-1 Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction After Myocardial Infarction: Importance of Both Infarct Site and Size

    Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is an important prognostic variable after myocardial infarction (MI). While the extent of MI is known to affect the subsequent global LVEF, it is not clear whether anatomical site per se affects LVEF. Therefore, 48 consecutive patients (pts) who did not receive lytic therapy or undergo early revascularization were studied byechocardiography one week after Q wave MI. Using a previously validated endocardial mapping technique, the size of abnormal wall motion (AWM) in relation to the total endocardial surface area and the site of AWM were quantitated, LVEF was measured by Simpson's method using 2 apical views.ResultsNineteen pts had anterior MI (ANT) and 29 had inferior MI (INF). The mean LVEF was similar in both groups (ANT 46.9±14.7% vs INF 51.7±9.4%, pNS). The mean %AWM was greater in ANT MI (29.7±14.5) than in INF MI (21.3±13.8) (p=0.05). After accounting for differences in infarct size by multivariate regression analysis, both infarct size (p=0.0001) and infarct site (p=0.007) were significant independent determinants of LVEF. This effect was most pronounced in larger ANT Mis (%AWM>25%) where the LVEF was significantly lower than in smaller Mis. In INF MI, despite a similar range of sizes. increasing %AWM had minimal effect on LVEF.ConclusionIn addition to infarct size, the site of AWM is an important determinant of global LVEF. This observation may reflect site-dependent differences in the biomechanical responses to regional ventricular dysfunction

    Role of a native oxide on femtosecond laser interaction with silicon (100) near the damage threshold

    Si (100) with and without a 14–25 Å14–25Å thick native oxide was laser machined at grazing incidence using a Ti:sapphire femtosecond pulsed laser under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. The resulting damage feature size and morphology indicate that the presence or absence of the native oxide significantly affects the mechanism for femtosecond laser-induced damage. We propose that a fluence-dependent modification of the oxide by the incident laser pulse must be considered when studying femtosecond laser damage of Si (100) with a native oxide. Data are also presented that are consistent with a dose-dependent phase transformation in the amorphous oxide. The implications of the native oxide, including relative damage thresholds of the underlying Si (100) and the role of the oxide in damage morphology are addressed.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/87851/2/264103_1.pd

    Analysing user physiological responses for affective video summarisation

This is typically achieved by processing low-level image, audio and text features which are still quite disparate from the high-level semantics that end users identify with (the ‘semantic gap’). Physiological responses are potentially rich indicators of memorable or emotionally engaging video content for a given user. Consequently, we investigate whether they may serve as a suitable basis for a video summarisation technique by analysing a range of user physiological response measures, specifically electro-dermal response (EDR), respiration amplitude (RA), respiration rate (RR), blood volume pulse (BVP) and heart rate (HR), in response to a range of video content in a variety of genres including horror, comedy, drama, sci-fi and action. We present an analysis framework for processing the user responses to specific sub-segments within a video stream based on percent rank value normalisation. The application of the analysis framework reveals that users respond significantly to the most entertaining video sub-segments in a range of content domains. Specifically, horror content seems to elicit significant EDR, RA, RR and BVP responses, and comedy content elicits comparatively lower levels of EDR, but does seem to elicit significant RA, RR, BVP and HR responses. Drama content seems to elicit less significant physiological responses in general, and both sci-fi and action content seem to elicit significant EDR responses. We discuss the implications this may have for future affective video summarisation approaches

    Echocardiographic assessment of patients with infectious endocarditis: Prediction of risk for complications

    AbstractTo enhance the echocardiographic identification of high risk lesions in patients with infectious endocarditis, the medical records and two-dimensional echocardiograms of 204 patients with this condition were analyzed. The occurrence of specific clinical complications was recorded and vegetations were assessed with respect to predetermined morphologic characteristics.The overall complication rates were roughly equivalent for patients with mitral (53%), aortic (62%), tricuspid (77%) and prosthetic valve (61%) vegetations, as well as for those with nonspecific valvular changes but no discrete vegetations (57%), although the distribution of specific complications varied considerably among these groups. There were significantly fewer complications in patients without discernible valvular abnormalities (27%).In native left-sided valve endocarditis, vegetation size, extent, mobility and consistency were all found to be significant univariate predictors of complications. In multivariate analysis, vegetation size, extent and mobility emerged as optimal predictors and an echocardiographic score based on these factors predicted the occurrence of complications with 70% sensitivity and 92% specificity in mitral valve endocarditis and with 76% sensitivity and 62% specificity in aortic valve endocarditis

    Active surveillance of bat rabies in France: A 5-year study (2004–2009)

    Active surveillance of bats in France started in 2004 with an analysis of 18 of the 45 bat species reported in Europe. Rabies antibodies were detected in six indigenous species, mainly in Eptesicus serotinus and Myotis myotis, suggesting previous contact with the EBLV-1 rabies virus. Nineteen of the 177 tested bats were shown serologically positive in seven sites, particularly in central and south-western France. Neither infectious viral particles nor viral genomes were detected in 173 and 308 tested oral swabs, respectively. The presence of neutralising antibodies in female bats (18.6%) was significantly higher than in males (5.6%)
