    Knowledge of Type II Diabetes and its Complications Among Adult Vietnamese Immigrants

    This was a non-experimental quantitative study using survey method to assess diabetic knowledge of 102 adult Vietnamese immigrants. The Health Belief Model provided the theoretical framework, and the 24-item diabetes knowledge questionnaire was adopted from the Starr County Texas study to use for this study. Data were categorized and analyzed using descriptive methods such as frequency and percentage. The findings indicated that lack of knowledge about diabetes was a significant issue among the Vietnamese immigrant population. Health care providers should develop an appropriate cultural educational program about diabetes to help the Vietnamese population to detect diabetes early and to control diabetes effectively

    Do Analyst Earnings Beta Explain Growth Anomaly?

    Using a measure of cashflow risk derived from analyst forecasts, I find that cashflow risk offers a partial explanation for the value-growth anomaly. In particular, the lowest asset growth portfolio has a higher earnings beta than the highest asset growth portfolio. Approximately cashflow risk measured by earnings beta carries a significant positive risk premium of 1.24% with a t-value of 3.51

    Membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis in patients with chronic venous catheters: a case report and literature review.

    Chronic indwelling catheters have been reported to be associated with membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN) via the activation of the classical complement pathway in association with bacterial infections such as coagulase negative staphylococcus. We herein provide supporting evidence for the direct causal relationship between chronic catheter infections and MPGN via a case of recurrent MPGN associated with recurrent catheter infections used for total parenteral nutrition (TPN) in a man with short gut syndrome. We also present a literature review of similar cases and identify common clinical manifestations that may serve to aid clinicians in the early identification of MPGN associated with infected central venous catheterization or vice versa. The importance of routine monitoring of kidney function and urinalysis among patients with chronic central venous catheterization is highlighted as kidney injury may herald or coincide with overtly infected chronic indwelling central venous catheters

    Local structure in nematic and isotropic liquid crystals

    By computer simulations of systems of ellipsoids, we study the influence of the isotropic/nematic phase transition on the direct correlation functions (DCF) in anisotropic fluids. The DCF is determined from the pair distribution function by solving the full Ornstein-Zernike equation, without any approximations. Using a suitable molecular-fixed reference frame, we can distinguish between two qualitatively different contributions to the DCF: One which preserves rotational invariance, and one which breaks it and vanishes in the isotropic phase. We find that the symmetry preserving contribution is barely affected by the phase transition. However, symmetry breaking contributions emerge in the nematic phase and may become quite substantial. Thus the DCF in a nematic fluid is not rotationally invariant. In the isotropic fluid, the DCF is in good agreement with the prediction of the Percus-Yevick theory.Comment: to appear in J. Chem. Phy
