    STREAM WATER QUALITY MANAGEMENT: A STOCHASTIC MIXED-INTEGER PROGRAMMING MODEL

    Water quality management under the watershed approach of Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) programs requires that water quality standards be maintained throughout the year. The main purpose of this research was to develop a methodology that incorporates inter-temporal variations in stream conditions through statistical distributions of pollution loading variables. This was demonstrated through a cost minimization mixed-integer linear programming (MIP) model that maintains the spatial integrity of the watershed problem. Traditional approaches for addressing variability in stream conditions are unlikely to satisfy the assumptions on which these methodologies are founded or are inadequate in addressing the problem correctly when distributions are not normal. The MIP model solves for the location and the maximum capacity of treatment plants to be built throughout the watershed which will provide the optimal level of treatment throughout the year. The proposed methodology involves estimation of parameters of the distribution of pollution loading variables from simulated data and use of those parameters to re-generate a suitable number of random observations in the optimization process such that the new data preserve the same distribution parameters. The objective of the empirical model was to minimize costs for implementing pH TMDLs for a watershed by determining the level of treatment required to attain water quality standards under stochastic stream conditions. The output of the model was total minimum costs for treatment and selection of the spatial pattern of the least-cost technologies for treatment. To minimize costs, the model utilized a spatial network of streams in the watershed, which provides opportunities for cost-reduction through trading of pollution among sources and/or least-cost treatment. The results were used to estimate the costs attributable to inter-temporal variations and the costs of different settings for the margin of safety. The methodology was tested with water quality data for the Paint Creek watershed in West Virginia. The stochastic model included nine streams in the optimal solution. An estimate of inter-temporal variations in stream conditions was calculated by comparing total costs under the stochastic model and a deterministic version of the stochastic model estimated with mean values of the loading variables. It was observed that the deterministic model underestimates total treatment cost by about 45 percent relative to the 97th percentile stochastic model. Estimates of different margin of safety were calculated by comparing total costs for the 99.9th percentile treatment (instead of an idealistic absolute treatment) with that of the 95th to 99th percentile treatment. The differential costs represent the savings due to the knowledge of the statistical distribution of pollution and an explicit margin of safety. Results indicate that treatment costs are about 7 percent lower when the level of assurance is reduced from 99.9 to 99 percent and 21 percent lower when 95 percent assurance is selected. The application of the methodology, however, is not limited to the estimation of TMDL implementation costs.     A template-based generic programming approach was presented in a previous paper that separates the development effort of programming a physical model from that of computing additional quantities, such as derivatives, needed for embedded analysis algorithms. In this paper, we describe the implementation details for using the template-based generic programming approach for simulation and analysis of partial differential equations (PDEs). We detail several of the hurdles that we have encountered, and some of the software infrastructure developed to overcome them. We end with a demonstration where we present shape optimization and uncertainty quantification results for a 3D PDE application

    Violent and victimized bodies: sexual violence policy in England and Wales

    This paper uses the notion of the body to frame an archaeology of sexual violence policy in England and Wales, applying and developing Pillow’s ideas. It argues that the dominant construction is of sexual violence as an individualized crime, with the solution being for a survivor to report, and with support often instrumentalized in relation to criminal justice objectives. However, criminal justice proceedings can intensify or create further trauma for sexual violence survivors. Furthermore, in addition to criminalizing the violent body and supporting the victimized one, there is a need for policy to produce alternative types of bodies through preventative interventions. Much sexual violence is situated within (hetero) sexual dynamics constructing a masculine aggressor and a feminine body which eventually yields. Prevention must therefore focus on developing embodied boundaries, and narratives at the margins of policy could underpin such efforts

    Regulation of Lymphocyte Function by PPARγ: Relevance to Thyroid Eye Disease-Related Inflammation

    Thyroid eye disease (TED) is an autoimmune condition in which intense inflammation leads to orbital tissue remodeling, including the accumulation of extracellular macromolecules and fat. Disease progression depends upon interactions between lymphocytes and orbital fibroblasts. These cells engage in a cycle of reciprocal activation which produces the tissue characteristics of TED. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ (PPARγ) may play divergent roles in this process, both attenuating and promoting disease progression. PPARγ has anti-inflammatory activity, suggesting that it could interrupt intercellular communication. However, PPARγ activation is also critical to adipogenesis, making it a potential culprit in the pathological fat accumulation associated with TED. This review explores the role of PPARγ in TED, as it pertains to crosstalk between lymphocytes and fibroblasts and the development of therapeutics targeting cell-cell interactions mediated through this signaling pathway

The latter transformation leads directly to solve this problem through noninvariant one-way speed of light.     Foraging Behaviours of Wolverines at a Large Arctic Goose Colony

    At the large Ross's goose and lesser snow goose colony at Karrak Lake, Nunavut, Canada, we saw wolverines kill two geese, take 13 eggs from 12 goose nests, and take three goose carcasses from two fox dens. Wolverines also made unsuccessful attempts to capture geese and frequently ignored eggs from nests where geese had fled the approaching wolverine. Most foods (all geese killed by wolverines and 80% of the eggs) were cached for later use, whereas few foods were eaten immediately (20% of the eggs and part of a goose taken from a fox den, which was later lost) or lost (all geese taken from fox dens). Wolverines spent little time caching foods (e.g., some foods were never covered), which suggests that recovery of these foods was not crucial to wolverines. When taking foods from fox dens, wolverines were mobbed by foxes; as a result, only one wolverine managed to consume part of a goose carcass taken from a fox den. These observations illustrate the opportunistic nature of wolverines and suggest that their scavenging success may be influenced by how well foods are defended.À l'importante colonie d'oies de Ross et de petites oies des neiges située à Karrak Lake au Nunavut (Canada), on a vu des carcajous tuer deux oies, prendre 13 oeufs dans 12 nids d'oies, et prendre trois carcasses d'oies dans deux terriers de renards.     Surveillance imaging of grade 1 astrocytomas in children: can duration and frequency of follow-up imaging and the use of contrast agents be reduced?

    Purpose: The optimum strategy for the surveillance of low-grade gliomas in children has not been established, and there is concern about the use of gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs), particularly in children, due to their deposition in the brain. The number of surveillance scans and the use of GBCAs in surveillance of low-risk tumours should ideally be limited. We aimed to investigate the consistency and utility of our surveillance imaging and also determine to what extent the use of GBCAs contributed to decisions to escalate treatment in children with grade 1 astrocytomas. / Methods: This was a retrospective single-centre study at a tertiary paediatric hospital. All children with a new diagnosis of a non-syndromic World Health Organization (WHO) grade 1 astrocytoma between 2007 and 2013 were included, with surveillance imaging up to December 2018 included in analysis. The intervals of surveillance imaging were recorded, and imaging and electronic health records were examined for decisions related to treatment escalation. / Results: Eighty-eight patients had 690 surveillance scans in the study period. Thirty-one patients had recurrence or progression leading to treatment escalation, 30 of whom were identified on surveillance imaging. The use of GBCAs did not appear to contribute to multidisciplinary team (MDT) decisions in the majority of cases. / Conclusion: Surveillance imaging could be reduced in number and duration for completely resected cerebellar tumours. MDT decisions were rarely made on the basis of post-contrast imaging, and GBCA administration could therefore potentially be restricted in the setting of surveillance of grade 1 astrocytomas in children
