Evidence Based Design in Healthcare: An Applied Study on the Impacts of Interior Design for Cerebral Palsy
Evidence Based Design (EBD) is an informed approach to design where designers base their decisions on quantitative and qualitative research. The design of the Universal Access Center for United Cerebral Palsy, discussed in this paper, encapsulates this approach to design. The five stages of EBD and how they were achieved within this project is defined. In the first phase, programming, current trends in healthcare as well as issues surrounding design for adults with Cerebral Palsy (CP) are discussed. In schematic design, initial issues of the project are resolved, and creative ideas are explored leading to the design development stage. In this phase, initial concepts are further developed and accompanied by detailed drawings. In the contract documents phase design drawings are finalized and made ready for construction and permitting. The final phase of design, contract administration, is the implementation of the design through construction, and it will not be explored in the context of this paper. This paper and the corresponding project end in the contract documents phase. Examples of the final drawings created as part of the design process can be seen in the following paper
An Application of Ridge Regression and LASSO Methods for Model Selection
Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) models are popular tools among field scientists, because they are easy to understand and use. Although OLS estimators are unbiased, it is often advantageous to introduce some bias in order to lower the overall variance in a model. This study focuses on comparing ridge regression and the LASSO methods which both introduce bias to the regression problem. Both approaches are modeled after the OLS but also implement a tuning parameter. Additionally, this study will compare the use of two different functions in R, one of which will be used for ridge regression and the LASSO while the other will be used strictly for the LASSO. The techniques discussed are applied to a real set of data involving some physiochemical properties of wine and how they affect the overall quality of the wine

Working with interpreters: the challenges of introducing Option Grid patient decision aids
Objective
We aimed to observe how an Option GridTM decision aid for clinical encounters might be used where an interpreter is present, and to assess the impact of its use on shared decision making.
Methods
Data were available from three clinical consultations between patient, clinician (a physiotherapist), and interpreter about knee osteoarthritis. Clinicians were trained in the use of an Option Grid decision aid and the tool was used. Consultations were audio-recorded, transcribed, and translated by independent translators into English.
Results
Analysis revealed the difficulties with introducing a written decision aid into an interpreted consultation. The extra discussion needed between the clinician and interpreter around the principles and purpose of shared decision making and instructions regarding the Option Grid decision aid proved challenging and difficult to manage. Discussion of treatment options while using an Option Grid decision aid was predominantly done between clinician and interpreter. The patient appeared to have little involvement in discussion of treatment options.
Conclusion
Patients were not active participants within the discussion. Further work needs to be done on how shared decision making can be achieved within interpreted consultations.
Practice Implications
Option Grid decision aids are not being used as intended in interpreted consultations
P2_3 Electric Armour
The validity of using a highly charged capacitor as ‘electric armour’ on light tanks is investigated. The capacitor discharges a large amount of energy into the incoming projectile, causing it to vaporise. It is found that a potential difference of 1kV is required to charge the capacitor to the desirable electric potential energy to vaporise the projectile
