    The Perfect Binary One-Error-Correcting Codes of Length 15: Part II--Properties

    A complete classification of the perfect binary one-error-correcting codes of length 15 as well as their extensions of length 16 was recently carried out in [P. R. J. \"Osterg{\aa}rd and O. Pottonen, "The perfect binary one-error-correcting codes of length 15: Part I--Classification," IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory vol. 55, pp. 4657--4660, 2009]. In the current accompanying work, the classified codes are studied in great detail, and their main properties are tabulated. The results include the fact that 33 of the 80 Steiner triple systems of order 15 occur in such codes. Further understanding is gained on full-rank codes via switching, as it turns out that all but two full-rank codes can be obtained through a series of such transformations from the Hamming code. Other topics studied include (non)systematic codes, embedded one-error-correcting codes, and defining sets of codes.     Prevalence and Demographics of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Users Birth-21: A Survey of Speech-Language Pathologists Serving Learners with Complex Communication Needs (CCN)

    Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) encompasses a wide range of tools, technologies, and intervention techniques that aim to foster and advance communication competence in individuals with complex communication needs (CCN). The individuals who utilize AAC span a range of ages, diagnoses, and cultures—but little data exists regarding prevalence of AAC use and the true nature of the population’s heterogeneity. The purposes of this study were 1. to describe and analyze the population of pediatric AAC users (birth-21) in Missouri and 2. to evaluate the preparation speech-language pathologists (SLPs) have had to serve these learners. To gather this information, a survey was developed and disseminated to SLPs who were members of the Missouri Speech-Language-Hearing Association. The survey response rate was 4%. Results indicated that approximately 10% of children ages birth-21 on Missouri SLPs’ caseloads used AAC. Reported AAC users were diverse in geographic area, disability type, and racial and ethnic identity. SLPs working with these children had a range of pre-service experiences. There was no statistically significant correlation between any type of professional preparation SLPs received and their comfort providing AAC services. Despite their level of professional preparation, all SLPs indicated areas related to AAC in which they sought more knowledge and experience. More effort must be made to ensure inclusion and quality of AAC courses in professional preparation programs, to better monitor the demographic profile of the population of Missouri children who use AAC, and to advance legislation that supports the needs of this population

    Fabrication and performance analysis of 4-sq cm indium tin oxide/InP photovoltaic solar cells

    Large-area photovoltaic solar cells based on direct current magnetron sputter deposition of indium tin oxide (ITO) into single-crystal p-InP substrates demonstrated both the radiation hardness and high performance necessary for extraterrestrial applications. A small-scale production project was initiated in which approximately 50 ITO/InP cells are being produced. The procedures used in this small-scale production of 4-sq cm ITO/InP cells are presented and discussed. The discussion includes analyses of performance range of all available production cells, and device performance data of the best cells thus far produced. Additionally, processing experience gained from the production of these cells is discussed, indicating other issues that may be encountered when large-scale productions are begun

    The Krotov combining construction of perfect 1-error-correcting binary codes from 2000 and a theorem of Heden saying that every non-full-rank perfect 1-error-correcting binary code can be constructed by this combining construction is generalized to the qq-ary case. Simply, every non-full-rank perfect code CC is the union of a well-defined family of ÎŒ\mu-components KÎŒK_\mu, where ÎŒ\mu belongs to an "outer" perfect code C∗C^*, and these components are at distance three from each other. Components from distinct codes can thus freely be combined to obtain new perfect codes. The Phelps general product construction of perfect binary code from 1984 is generalized to obtain ÎŒ\mu-components, and new lower bounds on the number of perfect 1-error-correcting qq-ary codes are presented.Comment: 8 page

    Structural characterization of a first-generation articulated-truss joint for space crane application

    A first-generation space crane articulated-truss joint was statically and dynamically characterized in a configuration that approximated an operational environment. The articulated-truss joint was integrated into a test-bed for structural characterization. Static characterization was performed by applying known loads and measuring the corresponding deflections to obtain load-deflection curves. Dynamic characterization was performed using modal testing to experimentally determine the first six mode shapes, frequencies, and modal damping values. Static and dynamic characteristics were also determined for a reference truss that served as a characterization baseline. Load-deflection curves and experimental frequency response functions are presented for the reference truss and the articulated-truss joint mounted in the test-bed. The static and dynamic experimental results are compared with analytical predictions obtained from finite element analyses. Load-deflection response is also presented for one of the linear actuators used in the articulated-truss joint. Finally, an assessment is presented for the predictability of the truss hardware used in the reference truss and articulated-truss joint based upon hardware stiffness properties that were previously obtained during the Precision Segmented Reflector (PSR) Technology Development Program

    The doubly shortened perfect codes of length 13 are classified utilizing the classification of perfect codes in [P.R.J. \"Osterg{\aa}rd and O. Pottonen, The perfect binary one-error-correcting codes of length 15: Part I - Classification, IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory, to appear]; there are 117821 such (13,512,3) codes. By applying a switching operation to those codes, two more (13,512,3) codes are obtained, which are then not doubly shortened perfect codes.Comment: v2: a correction concerning shortened codes of length 1

    Algebraic lattice constellations: bounds on performance

    In this work, we give a bound on performance of any full-diversity lattice constellation constructed from algebraic number fields. We show that most of the already available constructions are almost optimal in the sense that any further improvement of the minimum product distance would lead to a negligible coding gain. Furthermore, we discuss constructions, minimum product distance, and bounds for full-diversity complex rotated Z[i]/sup n/-lattices for any dimension n, which avoid the need of component interleaving
