    A new species of the Cyrtodactylus chauquangensis species group (Squamata, Gekkonidae) from Lao Cai Province, Vietnam

    We describe a new species of the genus Cyrtodactylus based on five adult specimens from Bac Ha District, Lao Cai Province, northern Vietnam. Cyrtodactylus luci sp. nov. is distinguished from the remaining Indochinese bent-toed geckos by a combination of the following morphological characteristics: medium size (SVL up to 89.5 mm); dorsal tubercles in 17–19 irregular transverse rows; ventral scales in 32–34 longitudinal rows at midbody; precloacal pores present in both sexes, 9 or 10 in males, 8 or 9 in females; 12–15 enlarged femoral scales on each thigh; femoral pores 9–12 in males, 5–10 in females; postcloacal tubercles 2–4; lamellae under toe IV 21–23; dorsal pattern consisting of 5 or 6 irregular dark bands, a thin neckband without V-shape or triangle shape in the middle, top of head with dark brown blotches; subcaudal scales transversely enlarged. Molecular phylogenetic analyses recovered the new species as the sister taxon to C. gulinqingensis from Yunnan Province, China, with strong support from all analyses and the two taxa are separated by approximately 8.87–9.22% genetic divergence based on a fragment of the mitochondrial ND2 gene. This is the first representative of Cyrtodactylus known from Lao Cai Province

    Despite the potential of vegetables for nutrition and income in Northern Vietnam, inadequate access to quality seed is a major constraint affecting production, diversity and diet quality. Both self-saved seed and bought seed are important sources for farmers and are linked to the primary purpose of production, market access, seed production knowledge and skills, and trustworthiness of the source. Vegetable diversity, seasonal availability and seed access varies with ethnic group, location, type of and specific vegetables requiring contextualisation of nutrition-sensitive interventions. There are opportunities for farmer sharing and exchange of seeds, vegetables, and knowledge, for safeguarding diversity, promote dietary quality, and improve farmer income

    Groundwater simulation in Dak Lak province based on MODFLOW model and climate change scenarios

    Purpose – Groundwater plays a critical part in both natural and human existence. When surface water is scarce in arid climates, groundwater becomes an immensely valuable resource. Dak Lak is an area that frequently lacks water resources for everyday living and production, and the scarcity of water resources is exacerbated during the dry season. As a result, it is critical to do study and understand about groundwater to meet the region's water demand. This study aims to extend the use of the MODFLOW model for groundwater simulation and assess the overall groundwater reserves and water demand in the highland province Dak Lak. Design/methodology/approach – The MODFLOW model is used in this work to compute and analyze the flow, prospective reserves of groundwater from which to plan extraction and estimate groundwater variation in the future. Findings – The application of the MODFLOW model to Dak Lak province demonstrates that, despite limited data, particularly drilling hole data for subterranean water research, the model's calculation results have demonstrated its reliability and great potential for use in other similar places. The use of the model in conjunction with other data extraction modules is a useful input for creating underground flow module maps for various time periods. The large impact of recharge and evaporation on groundwater supplies and water balance in the research area is demonstrated by simulations of climate change scenarios RCP4.5 and RCP8.5. Originality/value – None of the studies has been done previously to analyze water resources of Dak Lak and the scarcity of water resources is exacerbated during the dry season. Therefore, this study will provide useful insights in the water resource management and the conservation of Dak Lak. The groundwater in Dak Lak can meet the area's water demand, according to the results obtained and water balance in the study area. However, the management of water resources and rigorous monitoring of groundwater extraction activities in the area should receive more attention

    Pathogenic Escherichia coli Possess Elevated Growth Rates under Exposure to Sub-Inhibitory Concentrations of Azithromycin.

    Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has been identified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as one of the ten major threats to global health. Advances in technology, including whole-genome sequencing, have provided new insights into the origin and mechanisms of AMR. However, our understanding of the short-term impact of antimicrobial pressure and resistance on the physiology of bacterial populations is limited. We aimed to investigate morphological and physiological responses of clinical isolates of E. coli under short-term exposure to key antimicrobials. We performed whole-genome sequencing on twenty-seven E. coli isolates isolated from children with sepsis to evaluate their AMR gene content. We assessed their antimicrobial susceptibility profile and measured their growth dynamics and morphological characteristics under exposure to varying concentrations of ciprofloxacin, ceftriaxone, tetracycline, gentamicin, and azithromycin. AMR was common, with all organisms resistant to at least one antimicrobial; a total of 81.5% were multi-drug-resistant (MDR). We observed an association between resistance profile and morphological characteristics of the E. coli over a three-hour exposure to antimicrobials. Growth dynamics experiments demonstrated that resistance to tetracycline promoted the growth of E. coli under antimicrobial-free conditions, while resistance to the other antimicrobials incurred a fitness cost. Notably, antimicrobial exposure heterogeneously suppressed bacterial growth, but sub-MIC concentrations of azithromycin increased the maximum growth rate of the clinical isolates. Our results outline complex interactions between organism and antimicrobials and raise clinical concerns regarding exposure of sub-MIC concentrations of specific antimicrobials

    Fusion of B‐mode and shear wave elastography ultrasound features for automated detection of axillary lymph node metastasis in breast carcinoma

    Abstract: In this study, we evaluate and compare the diagnostic performance of ultrasound for non‐invasive axillary lymph node (ALN) metastasis detection. The study was based on fusing shear wave elastography (SWE) and B‐mode ultrasonography (USG) images. These images were subjected to pre‐processing and feature extraction, based on bi‐dimensional empirical mode decomposition and higher order spectra methods. The resulting nonlinear features were ranked according to their p‐value, which was established with Student's t‐test. The ranked features were used to train and test six classification algorithms with 10‐fold cross‐validation. Initially, we considered B‐mode USG images in isolation. A probabilistic neural network (PNN) classifier was able to discriminate positive from negative cases with an accuracy of 74.77% using 15 features. Subsequently, only SWE images were used and as before, the PNN classifier delivered the best result with an accuracy of 87.85% based on 47 features. Finally, we combined SWE and B‐mode USG images. Again, the PNN classifier delivered the best result with an accuracy of 89.72% based on 71 features. These three tests indicate that SWE images contain more diagnostically relevant information when compared with B‐mode USG. Furthermore, there is scope in fusing SWE and B‐mode USG to improve non‐invasive ALN metastasis detection

    Vegetable seed systems for ethnic minorities in northern Vietnam for enhanced nutrition and income

    Vegetables are a main source of nutrition and income for ethnic minority farmers in Vietnam’s Northern highlands. While the consumption of vegetables and value chains for fresh retail produce and seed markets offer huge opportunities for household nutrition security and development, and particularly women inclusion, current smallholder systems suffer from multiple problems. The Integrated vegetable seed systems development project addressed these issues by elucidating how, and under what conditions, increased access and use of high-quality seed translates into enhanced smallholder nutrition and income security. This poster provides the project highlights presented at the NL-CGIAR Conference, 2-3 November 2022

    Penicillium digitatum as a Model Fungus for Detecting Antifungal Activity of Botanicals: An Evaluation on Vietnamese Medicinal Plant Extracts.

    peer reviewedMedicinal plants play important roles in traditional medicine, and numerous compounds among them have been recognized for their antimicrobial activity. However, little is known about the potential of Vietnamese medicinal plants for antifungal activity. In this study, we examined the antagonistic activity of twelve medicinal plant species collected in Northern Vietnam against Penicillium digitatum, Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus fumigatus, and Candida albicans. The results showed that the antifungal activities of the crude extracts from Mahonia bealei, Ficus semicordata, and Gnetum montanum were clearly detected with the citrus postharvest pathogen P. digitatum. These extracts could fully inhibit the growth of P. digitatum on the agar medium, and on the infected citrus fruits at concentrations of 300-1000 µg/mL. Meanwhile, the other tested fungi were less sensitive to the antagonistic activity of the plant extracts. In particular, we found that the ethanolic extract of M. bealei displayed a broad-spectrum antifungal activity against all four pathogenic fungi. Analysis of this crude extract by enrichment coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography revealed that berberine and palmatine are major metabolites. Additional inspections indicated berberine as the key compound responsible for the antifungal activity of the M. bealei ethanolic extract. Our study provides a better understanding of the potential of Vietnamese medicinal plant resources for combating fungal pathogens. This work also highlights that the citrus pathogen P. digitatum can be employed as a model fungus for screening the antifungal activity of botanicals
