The influence of CEO characteristics on corporate environmental performance of SMEs: Evidence from Vietnamese SMEs

    Get PDF
Drawing on upper echelon theory, this study investigates the impact of CEOs’ (chief executive officers) demographic characteristics on corporate environmental performance (CEP) in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). We hypothesized that CEO characteristics, including gender, age, basic educational level, professional educational level, political connection, and ethnicity, affect SMEs’ environmental performance. Using the cross-sectional data analysis of 810 Vietnamese SMEs, this study provides evidence that female CEOs and CEOs’ educational level (both basic and professional) are positively related to the probability of CEP. We also find that based on the role of institutional environment on CEP, political connections had a negative effect on CEP in the context of Vietnam. Another finding is that SMEs with chief executives from ethnic minority groups show a higher level of the probability of corporate environmental performance than companies operated by Kinh chief executives. Since CEP is an essential dimension of corporate social responsibility, a strategic decision for SMEs, it is crucial for the company to select appropriate CEOs based on their demographic characteristic

Importin-binding Regulates Contractile Proteins for Cytokinesis

    Get PDF
Cytokinesis, the last step of mitosis, describes the physical separation of a cell into two daughters. In metazoan cells, a contractile ring composed of actin and myosin forms at the division plane and constricts the plasma membrane of the cell. Failure to complete cytokinesis or aberrant cell division can result in changes in fate or cause aneuploidy, both of which are hallmarks of cancer and other pathologies. To ensure that the assembly and constriction of the contractile ring is spatiotemporally coordinated with chromosome segregation, multiple pathways function cooperatively to regulate the localization and function of contractile proteins. These include pathways from the mitotic spindle, which provides cues for ring assembly and positioning. In addition, our lab recently uncovered a novel pathway which senses chromatin to position the ring. The work described here helped to elucidate the molecular mechanisms by which spindle-dependent and -independent pathways work together for cytokinesis, and to find novel targets of the chromatin pathway. Here, we show how the binding of importins, microtubules and RhoA are coordinated to regulate the scaffold protein anillin for cytokinesis. We also show that the NLS of Ect2, the activator of RhoA, is required for cytokinesis. Finally, to identify other contractile proteins regulated the Ran pathway in cytokinesis, a BioID of importin-β1 identified 206 potential new mitotic proximity interactors

Greening human resource management and employee commitment towards the environment: An interaction model

    Get PDF
In response to a greater environmental awareness, organizations are concerned more and more about the “greening” human resource management (GHRM). Although the literature on GHRM has been extending, published studies have paid little attention to the research of GHRM and its contribution to employee commitment towards the environment, especially the interactions of GHRM practices, so far. Thus, to bridge this research gap, this study extends the Ability-Motivation-Opportunity and the Social exchange theories in the green context by investigating a new conceptual framework, which explores the indirect and interactive effects of GHRM practices (training, reward, and organizational culture) on employee environmental commitment. A quantitative study is conducted through a survey involving 209 respondents. Findings suggest that: (1) three GHRM practices are important tools in stimulating directly employees to commit to the environmental activities, (2) a two-way interaction of green training and green organizational culture can unlock employee commitment for the environment, especially at the high and average levels of green organizational culture, (3) the commitment is also increased significantly through a three-way interaction, the two strongest effects are recognized with the conditions of high-green organizational culture and the average-and high-green reward, whereas (4) the interacting between green training and green reward is an unimportant factor in encouraging employee environmental attachment. © 2019 The Author(s).Internal Grant Agency of FaME TBU [IGA/FaME/2018/009]; La Trobe Business School, Australi
