    Exact Green's functions and Bosonization of a Luttinger liquid coupled to impedances

    The exact Green's functions of a finite-size Luttinger Liquid (LL) connected to impedances are computed at zero and finite temperature. Bosonization for a LL with Impedance boundary conditions (IBC) is proven to hold. The LL with open boundary conditions (for both Neumann and Dirichlet cases) is explicitly recovered as a special limit when one has infinite impedances. Additionally when the impedances are equal to the characteristic impedance of the Luttinger liquid then the finite Luttinger liquid is shown to be effectively equivalent to an infinite Luttinger liquid

    Mainstream economics and the Austrian school: toward reunification

    In this paper, I compare the methodology of the Austrian school to two alternative methodologies from the economic mainstream: the ‘orthodox’ and revealed preference methodologies. I argue that Austrian school theorists should stop describing themselves as ‘extreme apriorists’ (or writing suggestively to that effect), and should start giving greater acknowledgement to the importance of empirical work within their research program. The motivation for this dialectical shift is threefold: the approach is more faithful to their actual practices, it better illustrates the underlying similarities between the mainstream and Austrian research paradigms, and it provides a philosophical foundation that is much more plausible in itself

    Regional differences in willingness to pay for organic vegetables

    The concern about vegetable safety, together with a booming population and the rise of the middle class has made Vietnam become a potential market for organic vegetables. This paper investigates the determinants of willingness to pay (WTP) for organic vegetables in Hanoi, Vietnam with a particular attention to regional differences and the effect of risk perception. Using Contingent Valuation Method to analyze the data from a sample of 498 consumers in Hanoi, the paper shows that the perceived use values of organic vegetables, trust in organic labels, and disposable family income increased WTP for organic vegetables in both urban and rural regions.Though risk perception of conventional vegetables was high in both regions, such heightened risk perception just translated into the WTP in the rural region. In addition, the percentage of home-grown vegetables in the total vegetable consumption of the family influenced the WTP in the rural region only. Moreover, being an organic purchaser was positively related to the WTP in the urban region but not in the rural region.     Wavefunctions for the Luttinger liquid

    Standard bosonization techniques lead to phonon-like excitations in a Luttinger liquid (LL), reflecting the absence of Landau quasiparticles in these systems. Yet in addition to the above excitations some LL are known to possess solitonic states carrying fractional quantum numbers (e.g. the spin 1/2 Heisenberg chain). We have reconsidered the zero modes in the low-energy spectrum of the gaussian boson LL hamiltonian both for fermionic and bosonic LL: in the spinless case we find that two elementary excitations carrying fractional quantum numbers allow to generate all the charge and current excited states of the LL. We explicitly compute the wavefunctions of these two objects and show that one of them can be identified with the 1D version of the Laughlin quasiparticle introduced in the context of the Fractional Quantum Hall effect. For bosons, the other quasiparticle corresponds to a spinon excitation. The eigenfunctions of Wen's chiral LL hamiltonian are also derived: they are quite simply the one dimensional restrictions of the 2D bulk Laughlin wavefunctions.Comment: 5 pages; accepted for publication in EPR B, Rapid Note

    Fractional excitations in the Luttinger liquid

    We reconsider the spectrum of the Luttinger liquid (LL) usually understood in terms of phonons (density fluctuations), and within the context of bosonization we give an alternative representation in terms of fractional states. This allows to make contact with Bethe Ansatz which predicts similar fractional states. As an example we study the spinon operator in the absence of spin rotational invariance and derive it from first principles: we find that it is not a semion in general; a trial Jastrow wavefunction is also given for that spinon state. Our construction of the new spectroscopy based on fractional states leads to several new physical insights: in the low-energy limit, we find that the Sz=0S_{z}=0 continuum of gapless spin chains is due to pairs of fractional quasiparticle-quasihole states which are the 1D counterpart of the Laughlin FQHE quasiparticles. The holon operator for the Luttinger liquid with spin is also derived. In the presence of a magnetic field, spin-charge separation is not realized any longer in a LL: the holon and the spinon are then replaced by new fractional states which we are able to describe.Comment: Revised version to appear in Physical Review B. 27 pages, 5 figures.     The Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan image requires expertise in the segmentation where clustering algorithm plays an important role in the automation process. The algorithm optimization is concluded based on the performance, quality and number of clusters extracted. This paper is proposed to study the commonly used K Means clustering algorithm and to discuss a brief list of toolboxes for reproducing and extending works presented in medical image analysis.     Clearing Stock of The Invisible: Effects of Cosmopolitan Power on the Supply of Affordable Housing

    Spatio-temporal imbalances in the pace of globalized competition and development have resulted in a demanding requirement for affordable housing in Australia’s undersupplied and entrenched communities further segregated from their more able neighbors. Neoliberal governance and planning policies exerts an even higher burden on non-governmental actors in remediating the discord in supply and demand with developers commanding a dominant position to negotiate more lucrative arrangements, reducing or negating their requirements in delivering target ratios of affordable housing in new developments. Through an examination of the spatial extents of the Barangaroo precinct development in its privileged position on the waterfront in Sydney and its submitted documentation, this paper finds an increasing chasm for the urban poor attempting to integrate into Sydney Global City, arguing for a re-evaluation of housing policy to shift the local condition from exclusive enclaves to cohesive social landscapes in an increasingly image-driven cosmopolitan machine

    The Study of the Regulon of OxyR in Escherichia coli and Porphyromonas gingivalis

    The facultative anaerobe, Escherichia coli and the obligate anaerobe, Porphyromonas gingivalis are two bacteria that reside in our body. Although they reside in separate environments, they are both subject to hydrogen peroxide stress and have mechanisms to regulate the stress. OxyR is the primary transcriptional regulator/sensor of oxidative stress response caused by hydrogen peroxide. OxyR in P. gingivalis is not well-characterized compared to OxyR in E. coli. We sought to characterize and compare the two forms of OxyR in order to gain a better understanding of the protein. We determined the oligomeric state of both proteins: primarily a tetramer for E. coli and primarily a tetramer for P. gingivalis OxyR.. We demonstrated DNA binding with E. coli OxyR, indicating purification of the functional form of E. coli OxyR.Through pulldown assays we discovered potential novel binding targets, mobB for E. coli OxyR and PG1209 for P. gingivalis OxyR. Many of the other targets corresponded to intergenic regions within genes, which may pertain to small RNAs or small proteins. These results show that OxyR in E. coli and P. gingivalis has novel function and properties indicating an expanded role in addition to the well-characterized oxidative stress response
