Electron Spin Decoherence in Bulk and Quantum Well Zincblende Semiconductors
A theory for longitudinal (T1) and transverse (T2) electron spin coherence
times in zincblende semiconductor quantum wells is developed based on a
non-perturbative nanostructure model solved in a fourteen-band restricted basis
set. Distinctly different dependences of coherence times on mobility,
quantization energy, and temperature are found from previous calculations.
Quantitative agreement between our calculations and measurements is found for
GaAs/AlGaAs, InGaAs/InP, and GaSb/AlSb quantum wells.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figure
Effect of bulk inversion asymmetry on the Datta-Das transistor
A model of the Datta-Das spin field-effect transistor is presented which, in
addition to the Rashba interaction, takes into account the influence of bulk
inversion asymmetry of zinc-blende semiconductors. In the presence of bulk
inversion asymmetry, the conductance is found to depend significantly on the
crystallographic orientation of the channel. We determine the channel direction
optimal for the observation of the Datta-Das effect in GaAs and InAs-based

How a firm's domestic footprint and domestic environmental uncertainties jointly shape added cultural distances : the roles of resource dependence and headquarters attention
Even though many firms conduct most of their business domestically, international management research has remained remarkably silent on the role of a firm's domestic footprint in its internationalization strategy. We shed light on that role by exploring how the size of a firm's domestic footprint influences the cultural distance that the firm adds to its country portfolio when expanding internationally. Integrating resource dependence theory and the attention‐based view, we hypothesize that a firm's domestic footprint has a negative relationship with added cultural distance (ACD), and that domestic policy uncertainty strengthens this relationship whereas domestic demand uncertainty weakens it. We find robust support for our hypotheses in a sample of the world's largest retailers covering the period 2000–07, indicating that a firm's domestic footprint and domestic environmental uncertainties jointly shape cross‐cultural expansion strategies. Our findings suggest that ACDs reflect headquarters executives' desire to avoid ineffective foreign expansions, hinting at possible biases in studies of the performance effects of distance
Desymmetrization of an octahedral coordination complex inside a self-assembled exoskeleton.
The synthesis of a centrally functionalized, ribbon-shaped [6]polynorbornane ligand L that self-assembles with Pd(II) cations into a {Pd2 L4 } coordination cage is reported. The shape-persistent {Pd2 L4 } cage contains two axial cationic centers and an array of four equatorial H-bond donors pointing directly towards the center of the cavity. This precisely defined supramolecular environment is complementary to the geometry of classic octahedral complexes [M(XY)6 ] with six diatomic ligands. Very strong binding of [Pt(CN)6 ](2-) to the cage was observed, with the structure of the host-guest complex {[Pt(CN)6 ]@Pd2 L4 } supported by NMR spectroscopy, MS, and X-ray data. The self-assembled shell imprints its geometry on the encapsulated guest, and desymmetrization of the octahedral platinum species by the influence of the D4h -symmetric second coordination sphere was evidenced by IR spectroscopy. [Fe(CN)6 ](3-) and square-planar [Pt(CN)4 ](2-) were strongly bound. Smaller octahedral anions such as [SiF6 ](2-) , neutral carbonyl complexes ([M(CO)6 ]; M=Cr, Mo, W) and the linear [Ag(CN)2 ](-) anion were only weakly bound, showing that both size and charge match are key factors for high-affinity binding
Anisotropic splitting of intersubband spin plasmons in quantum wells with bulk and structural inversion asymmetry
In semiconductor heterostructures, bulk and structural inversion asymmetry
and spin-orbit coupling induce a k-dependent spin splitting of valence and
conduction subbands, which can be viewed as being caused by momentum-dependent
crystal magnetic fields. This paper studies the influence of these effective
magnetic fields on the intersubband spin dynamics in an asymmetric n-type
GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well. We calculate the dispersions of intersubband spin
plasmons using linear response theory. The so-called D'yakonov-Perel'
decoherence mechanism is inactive for collective intersubband excitations,
i.e., crystal magnetic fields do not lead to decoherence of spin plasmons.
Instead, we predict that the main signature of bulk and structural inversion
asymmetry in intersubband spin dynamics is a three-fold, anisotropic splitting
of the spin plasmon dispersion. The importance of many-body effects is pointed
out, and conditions for experimental observation with inelastic light

Radiation-induced oscillatory magnetoresistance as a sensitive probe of the zero-field spin splitting in high mobility GaAs/AlGaAs devices
We suggest an approach for characterizing the zero-field spin splitting of
high mobility two-dimensional electron systems, when beats are not readily
observable in the Shubnikov-de Haas effect. The zero-field spin splitting and
the effective magnetic field seen in the reference frame of the electron is
evaluated from a quantitative study of beats observed in radiation-induced

Policy, Performativity and Partnership: an Ethical Leadership Perspective
This article identifies the need to think differently about educational partnerships in a changing and turbulent post compulsory policy environment in England. The policy and institutional contexts in which universities and colleges currently operate seem to be fuelling performativity at the expense of educational values. There appears to be a sharp interruption in the steady increase in educational partnerships as a vehicle for increasing and widening participation in higher education. We are witnessing a marked change in university / college relationships that appears to be a consequence of government calling a halt to increased participation in higher education, creating an increasingly competitive market for a more limited pool of student places. The implication that educational policy at the national level determines a particular pattern or mode of leadership decision making throughout an institution should however be resisted. Policy developments that challenge the moral precepts of education should not be allowed to determine how a leader acts, rather they should prompt actions that are truly educational, rooted in morality, and atached to identifiable educational values. Educational leaders have agency to resist restricted discourses in favour of ethical and principled change strategies that are a precondition for sustainable transformative partnerships in post compulsory education. University leaders in particular are called upon to use their considerable influence to resist narrow policy or managerial instrumentalism or performativity and embrace alternatives that are both educationally worthwhile and can enhance institutional resilience
