A New Interpretation for the Second Peak of T Coronae Borealis Outbursts: A Tilting Disk around a Very Massive White Dwarf

    Get PDF
A new interpretation for the second peak of T Coronae Borealis (T CrB) outbursts is proposed based on a thermonuclear runaway (TNR) model. The system consists of a very massive white dwarf (WD) with a tilting accretion disk and a lobe-filling red-giant. The first peak of the visual light curve of T CrB outbursts is well reproduced by the TNR model on a WD close to the Chandrasekhar mass (MWD≳1.35 M⊙M_{\rm WD} \gtrsim 1.35 ~M_\odot), while the second peak is reproduced by the combination of the irradiated M-giant and the irradiated tilting disk. The derived fitting parameters are the WD mass MWD∼1.35 M⊙M_{\rm WD} \sim 1.35 ~M_\odot, the M-giant companion mass MRG∼0.7M⊙M_{\rm RG} \sim 0.7 M_\odot (0.6−1.0M⊙0.6-1.0 M_\odot is acceptable), the inclination angle of the orbit i \sim 70 \arcdeg, and the tilting angle of the disk i_{\rm prec} \sim 35 \arcdeg. These parameters are consistent with the recently derived binary parameters of T CrB.Comment: 6 pages including 2 figures, to be published in ApJ Letter

Determination of Flaw Growth Characteristics of Ti-6Al-4V Sheet in the Solution-Treated and Aged Condition

The specific experimental investigation undertaken was designed to answer these questions on Ti-6Al-4V in the solution treated and aged condition. The defect growth and fracture characteristics were studied in parent (unwelded) and welded sheet material. The results of the study indicate that cryogenic proof testing will screen smaller size defects than proof testing at ambient conditions. However some unusual crack growth behavior during the proof test simulation suggests that some further study be made of stress and time duration effects

Tao Hongjing and the Reading of Daoist Geography

    Get PDF
This article studies ways in which Daoist writers in early medieval China represented sacred lands. It goes beyond the descriptions of Daoist sacred geography to analyze ways in which these texts were tools to disseminate new revelations about the ancient history and ownership of temple lands. It begins by looking at Han dynasty conceptions of mountains, in particular the role of individuals who were privy to the hidden, esoteric knowledge of land formations. The second part of the article focuses on the writings of the fifth century polymath Tao Hongjing. These commentaries provide valuable insight into the kinds of social exchanges that underpin the writing of Daoist geography. These writings about religious geography reflect the interests of a new clerical class of individuals who developed and recreated sacred sites on behalf of royal benefactors

Creative Thesis Project: Handbook for Developing Trust with Gender and Sexual Minority Students in a Campus Health Care Clinic

Trust is an important element in patient-provider relationships in the health care field. Patient trust in the provider is linked to higher satisfaction of care, better adherence to treatment plans, overall higher success in health care visits, and better likelihood of seeking out medical care in the future. Trust can be difficult for health care providers to establish with gender and sexual minority (GSM) patients due to health care’s well known history of harassment and discrimination against the GSM community. The Handbook for Developing Trust with Gender and Sexual Minority Students in a Campus Health Care Clinic addresses health care disparities created by lack of trust for GSM patients and how health care providers on Eastern Illinois University’s campus can alter communication behavior to improve trust and thus improve the quality of health care provided to these students. The handbook uses the social penetration theory and uncertainty reduction theory combined with personal testimonies from GSM college students to guide the reader through five main portions of the handbook, including; Introduction, Use of this Handbook, Vocabulary, Diversity of Patient, and Trust, supplemented with reflection questions, assessment tools, and additional resources. The handbook aims to raise awareness of the unique risks and health care needs GSM student-patients experience and provide the reader with practical tools to address these concerns through the development of trust
