Larval Ecology of Some Lower Michigan Black Flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) With Keys to the Immature Stages
The species composition, succession, and seasonal abundance of -immature simuliids ocmrrhg in the Rose Lake Wildlife Research Area in lower Michigan are presented. Selected physical and chemical characteristics of streams in the above area were examined and compared in relation to faunal distributions. Comparisons of species differences between permanent and temporary streams were made utilizing the functional group concept based on feeding mechanisms.
Keys and illustrations are presented for the identiiication of larvae and pupae of four genera (Prosimulium, Simulium, Stegopterna, Cnephia) and 19 species of Simuliidae known to occur in lower Michigan. Two species, Cnephia ornithophilia and Simulium vemum, were recorded for the first time in Michigan
Flux of nutrients from Russian rivers to the Arctic Ocean: Can we establish a baseline against which to judge future changes?
Climate models predict significant warming in the Arctic in the 21st century, which will impact the functioning of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems as well as alter landâocean interactions in the Arctic. Because river discharge and nutrient flux integrate largeâscale processes, they should be sensitive indicators of change, but detection of future changes requires knowledge of current conditions. Our objective in this paper is to evaluate the current state of affairs with respect to estimating nutrient flux to the Arctic Ocean from Russian rivers. To this end we provide estimates of contemporary (1970sâ1990s) nitrate, ammonium, and phosphate fluxes to the Arctic Ocean for 15 large Russian rivers. We rely primarily on the extensive data archives of the former Soviet Union and current Russian Federation and compare these values to other estimates and to model predictions. Large discrepancies exist among the various estimates. These uncertainties must be resolved so that the scientific community will have reliable data with which to calibrate Arctic biogeochemical models and so that we will have a baseline against which to judge future changes (either natural or anthropogenic) in the Arctic watershed

MUSE observations of a changing-look AGN I: The re-appearance of the broad emission lines
Optical changing-look Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are a class of sources
that change type within a short timescale of years or decades. This change is
characterised by the appearance or disappearance of broad emission lines, often
associated with dramatic AGN continuum flux changes that are orders of
magnitude larger than those expected from typical AGN variability. In this work
we study for the first time the host galaxy of a changing-look AGN, Mrk 590,
using high spatial resolution optical and near-infrared observations. We
discover that after ~ 10 yr absence, the optical broad emission lines of Mrk
590 have reappeared. The AGN optical continuum flux however, is still ~ 10
times lower than that observed during the most luminous state in the 1990s. The
host galaxy shows a 4.5 kpc radius star-forming ring with knots of ionised and
cold molecular gas emission. Extended ionised and warm molecular gas emission
are detected in the nucleus, indicating that there is a reservoir of gas as
close as 60 pc from the black hole. We observe a nuclear gas spiral between
radii r ~ 0.5 - 2 kpc, which has been suggested as a dynamical mechanism able
to drive the necessary gas to fuel AGN. We also discover blue-shifted and high
velocity dispersion [O III] emission out to a radius of 1 kpc, tracing a
nuclear gas outflow. The gas dynamics in Mrk 590 suggest a complex balance
between gas inflow and outflow in the nucleus of the galaxy.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA
Subband Engineering Even-Denominator Quantum Hall States
Proposed even-denominator fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) states
suggest the possibility of excitations with non-Abelian braid statistics.
Recent experiments on wide square quantum wells observe even-denominator FQHE
even under electrostatic tilt. We theoretically analyze these structures and
develop a procedure to accurately test proposed quantum Hall wavefunctions. We
find that tilted wells favor partial subband polarization to yield Abelian
even-denominator states. Our results show that tilting quantum wells
effectively engineers different interaction potentials allowing exploration of
a wide variety of even-denominator states
High-Speed Flow and Fuel Imaging Study of Available Spark Energy in a Spray-Guided Direct-Injection Engine and Implications on Misfires
The spark energy transferred under the highly stratified conditions during late injection in a spray-guided spark-ignition direct-injection (SG-SIDI) engine is not well characterized. The impact of high pressures, temperatures, velocities, and variations in local fuel concentration along with temporal and/or spatial variations on spark performance must be better characterized. Previous spark ignition studies have not addressed the full range of conditions that are present in SG-SIDI engines. Therefore, high-speed particle image velocimetry (PIV) experiments are conducted to characterize the spark energy dependence for a wide range of well-defined homogeneous fuelĂąâŹâair equivalence ratios (W50ĂąâŹâ2.9) and average air velocities (0ĂąâŹâ8m/s) in an optical SG-SIDI engine. Amoderate dependence of spark energy on equivalence ratio is shown to exist with average values of spark energy increasing by 21 per cent for the equivalence ratio range of W50ĂąâŹâ2.3. Air injection into the motored engine is used to prepare well-defined flow conditions without the complications of fuel concentration gradients that are present during fuel injection. This allows the study of the effects of velocity, shear strain rate, and vorticity on spark energy. The spark energy increases with velocity at the spark plug. This observation is consistent with findings reported in the literature for low-pressure conditions. A linear increase is shown between shear strain rate and spark energy, while vorticity and spark energy are only weakly correlated. Simultaneous high-speed PIV, planar laser-induced fluorescence, and spark-discharge electrical measurements are also performed in the optical SG-SIDI engine to measure flow properties and fuel concentrations under late injection. Operating parameters are chosen to be near peak indicated mean effective pressure performance, but they occasionally provide a random misfired or partial burned cycle. Misfired cycles occur under stoichiometric-to-lean mixtures and low velocities near the spark plug. The lower spark energies observed under these conditions are in agreement with the observationsmade under well-controlled mixture and flow conditions reported in this study. All mixture conditions found in misfiring and partially burning cycles are within the ignitability range and fall within the general population of all, predominantly well-burning, cycles. Superlattice Magnetophonon Resonances in Strongly Coupled InAs/GaSb Superlattices
We report an experimental study of miniband magnetoconduction in
semiconducting InAs/GaSb superlattices. For samples with miniband widths below
the longitudinal optical phonon energy we identify a new superlattice
magnetophonon resonance (SLMPR) caused by resonant scattering of electrons
across the mini-Brillouin zone. This new resonant feature arises directly from
the drift velocity characteristics of the superlattice dispersion and total
magnetic quantisation of the superlattice Landau level minibands.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
