    CLEF 2005: Ad Hoc track overview

    We describe the objectives and organization of the CLEF 2005 ad hoc track and discuss the main characteristics of the tasks offered to test monolingual, bilingual and multilingual textual document retrieval. The performance achieved for each task is presented and a preliminary analysis of results is given. The paper focuses in particular on the multilingual tasks which reused the test collection created in CLEF 2003 in an attempt to see if an improvement in system performance over time could be measured, and also to examine the multilingual results merging problem

    Gravitational signals emitted by a point mass orbiting a neutron star: effects of stellar structure

    The effects that the structure of a neutron star would have on the gravitational emission of a binary system are studied in a perturbative regime, and in the frequency domain. Assuming that a neutron star is perturbed by a point mass moving on a close, circular orbit, we solve the equations of stellar perturbations in general relativity to evaluate the energy lost by the system in gravitational waves. We compare the energy output obtained for different stellar models with that found by assuming that the perturbed object is a black hole with the same mass, and we discuss the role played by the excitation of the stellar modes. Ouresults indicate that the stellar structure begins to affect the emitted power when the orbital velocity is v >0.2c (about 185 Hz for a binary system composed of two canonical neutron stars). We show that the differences between different stellar models and a black hole are due mainly to the excitation of the quasinormal modes of the star.     Placenta on pups' skin accelerates onset of maternal behaviour in non-pregnant rats

    Previous research has indicated that virgin rats (Rattus norvegicus) behave maternally (sensitize) more rapidly if kept in close proximity with pups. Since both parturient rats and a large percentage of virgin rats avidly consume placenta, we tested whether placenta and amnionic fluid, applied to the skin of the stimulus pups, would draw the female adults into closer contact with the pups and therefore hasten the onset of maternal behaviour. The results indicated that the procedure indeed shortened the maternal sensitization latency. Furthermore, this effect was not due to the wetness of the pups, to the presence of placenta in the cage, or to the adults having previously ingested placenta. Other attractive ingestibles applied to the pups' skin produced intermediate, but not significant, shortening of the maternal sensitization latency
