Characteristics of advanced hydrogen maser frequency standards
Measurements with several operational atomic hydrogen maser standards have been made which illustrate the fundamental characteristics of the maser as well as the analysability of the corrections which are made to relate the oscillation frequency to the free, unperturbed, hydrogen standard transition frequency. Sources of the most important perturbations, and the magnitude of the associated errors, are discussed. A variable volume storage bulb hydrogen maser is also illustrated which can provide on the order of 2 parts in 10 to the 14th power or better accuracy in evaluating the wall shift. Since the other basic error sources combined contribute no more than approximately 1 part in 10 to the 14th power uncertainty, the variable volume storage bulb hydrogen maser will have net intrinsic accuracy capability of the order of 2 parts in 10 to the 14th power or better. This is an order of magnitude less error than anticipated with cesium standards and is comparable to the basic limit expected for a free atom hydrogen beam resonance standard
An improved atomic hydrogen frequency and time standard
Use of a large bulb, long-multipole magnet, automatic tuner and aluminum cavity provides an improved hydrogen maser which is accurate over long periods of time and suitable for tracking station environments
Projection operator formalism and entropy
The entropy definition is deduced by means of (re)deriving the generalized
non-linear Langevin equation using Zwanzig projector operator formalism. It is
shown to be necessarily related to an invariant measure which, in classical
mechanics, can always be taken to be the Liouville measure. It is not true that
one is free to choose a ``relevant'' probability density independently as is
done in other flavors of projection operator formalism. This observation
induces an entropy expression which is valid also outside the thermodynamic
limit and in far from equilibrium situations. The Zwanzig projection operator
formalism therefore gives a deductive derivation of non-equilibrium, and
equilibrium, thermodynamics. The entropy definition found is closely related to
the (generalized) microcanonical Boltzmann-Planck definition but with some
subtle differences. No ``shell thickness'' arguments are needed, nor desirable,
for a rigorous definition. The entropy expression depends on the choice of
macroscopic variables and does not exactly transform as a scalar quantity. The
relation with expressions used in the GENERIC formalism are discussed
Entomopathogenic nematodes for biological control of codling moth
Entomopathogenic nematodes are often found naturally infecting codling moth larvae. The
effect of an autumn treatment with S. feltiae on the fruit damage in the following summer
was evaluated by treating 4 different apple orchards in October 2004 and 2005 at
application rates of 3.75; 2 and 1.5 billion nematodes in 4000 l / ha. In three of the treated
orchards, one treated with 3.75x109 nematodes/ha the other two treated with 2e9
nematode/ha, reduction in fruit damage was around 50%. In the most heavily infested
orchard, which was treated with 1.5x109 nematode/ha only 33% reduction in fruit damage
was achieved. Compared to previous studies, this was the first assessing the effect on the
fruit damage in the summer following the treatment rather than assessing the mortality of
sentinel larvae fixed to the treated tree trunks
